The V222 is the only LWB car in its' segment that doesn't look like an afterthought. And it actually wasn't when it was designed.

Especially in the configuration shown in this video, it looks marvelous.

imo this pic shows that the FL changes were done for the better overall..
The FL has the amg pack, pre doesn't, big difference. I still feel facelift moves the S-Klasse sideways in terms of aesthetics. Tech is probably brought up to speed from 4 years ago...

Came across this new wheel in MBUSA site. I couldn't find it in any other country sites, is it only for US market? And is it the replacement of the S600 19inch wheels as below? May be @Wolfgang can get us any inputs.

However Mercedes had this similar elegant multi-spoke wheels for the last few generation since W116, but revolutionised accordingly.

Mercedes have also updated plated forge wheels for Maybach series with another two designs.

I think Mercedes have came out with the plated wheels from W140 onwards and it have seen in each generations

^ You're correct @hannaz, they are the replacement (usually it's not the U.S getting it first so that's new). I saw them in the print brochure at the dealership. Nice to see MB keeping the tradition alive for those who want it.

Re MBUSA: I hope the RWD S560 is coming soon otherwise it'll be a real shame if you can only get MBC with the dinosaur V6 S450 or the also dinosaur S65. Everything else is 4-Matic.

The prefacelift still look quite nice; it's not like the W221 where you had to upgrade to the LED strip crazed times of the late 2000's & sharper styling.

Totally agree on this one. After the FL the preFL W221 immediately looked old and dated. You can't say the same about the W222 FL and preFL.

IMO the pre FL W221 was never a great design and there were some unfinished touches, specially around the headlights and the front bumper design. The W222 is far more elegant and the design elements are much better resolved.

@Monster, W221 pre FL front was indeed a bit unsolved. Looking in your mirror, seeing one approaching, it seemed to me a smaller car than it really was. Seeing it Mopf/FL in your mirror, it looked significant different, though the true measurements weren't changed.

The new wheels look awesome..and also a very nice analysis of MB wheel history @hannaz, there is indeed a pattern of evolution going on..

Long time lurker here, from the start of the w222 threads. I gave in to the desire to have an S-class today and signed the contract. I love the car, but did not like the facelift at first, especially the AMG pack, and the new steering wheel. But it grew on me, and now i love it, and think it is better than the prefacelift. Still love the original.

I was considering a lot of options, from 350d to Maybach. We have a lot of tax on cars in my country, so it was difficult to decide what was "sensible". In the end i gave up and considered only what i wanted myself, and my dream car has always been the S500. So i ordered the S560.

Build is here: Mercedes-Benz Car Configurator

It took a long time to make this build, because several choices are dependant on others, and exclude some. They don't sell many S-classes in my country or city, so dealers often have little experience with this car.

The most difficult thing was the exclusive seats, neither me or my dealer could figure out how to combine it with the AMG exterior styling. It always turned on the AMG plus, with AMG seat, wich i dont hate, but i dont love them either. Turned out i had to select the Multifunction sport nappa steering wheel. Then i could get the interior i wanted. I liked the AMG performance steering wheel also, but i cannot get it with my build, then the AMG seats are back.

I would love feedback and suggestions. I sill have some time to make changes. Production in February.

I also have some issues with 4matic, that will be changed to a car with Magic Body Control. I live in Norway, and because it snows sometimes, and it could be a little snow on the last 5 meters on the road to the cabin, all S-class cars are sold as 4matic here.

People don't really need 4matic, but good winter tires made for special made for Scandinavia is a must in winter, some skill in winter driving also helps.

The dealer and HQ are very helpful and are getting country approval for the car with Magic Body Control for me. It will take some time, but they will get it done(i hope).

I am not a designer at all, but I can't see "unfinished" and "unsolved" here. Every line is in its place. You either like it or not.

I don't like the look of the headlamps nevertheless.

But 221 had a solid presence. It was so solidly looking that was killing every other car. The same with W140. 222 is another thing. It is very beautiful and elegant. It makes people say WOW, but not as solid as 221. My opinion only.

Spot on..the W221 still looks solidly elegant today and has aged extremely well pre FL or FL imo..

It's funny how the grilles on these older cars suddenly look so small to me.
I wonder what is behind this trend for larger grilles?

a question: but in the long-run version, is the letter L next to the template name still inserted?
example:

S 560 L 4 MATIC?
