S-Class (W221) [Official] Mercedes-Benz S-Class W221 Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz chassis code W221 is the fifth generation S-Class, produced from August 2005 until June 2013. The W221 S-Class was unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show as the successor of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) and the predecessor of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222).
Big luxury sedans aren't the most exciting cars in the world, but I certainly wouldn't go as far as to say that the S is dull. But to each his own...

I find it interesting that people are seemingly already getting bored of the S-Class after just a few years, hearing words like "dated", "boring", etc. getting thrown around. It's interesting because when it was first launched it was very fresh. Is this because of all the gimmicks and design over-steppings M-B did with it? They usually fore-go all the gimmicks (in the past at least), to keep the models in a sense of lasting power. I mean, it still has a whole 4 years left in its Production cycle.

Ironically I'm appreciating the car more these days like I said. :t-hands: That might be simply because I don't like anything else they're really putting out though.

I do agree with the person above about the headlights, I never understood why they put those generic, sharply slanted things on that every other car has.... I actually like the W220's more unique and elegant offerings. The rear boot is a bit sloppy and late-to-the-game (bangle-butt style), the rear tails are a bit sloppy in how they mate with the fenders I think, the interior a little sparse, I wish the hood kept the "double hump" curves toward the edges (adds an elegant touch) that other models had/have, the fender flares are definitely polarizing, but can become tiring to look at I guess, but besides that, I think it's a very class design, albeit fighting a bit too far on the bloated/fat side, but not far enough to make me hate it, and can be stunning when equipped right in certain lights. If they refined some areas I think it would be damn near perfect.

I wouldnt' be surprised to see the next S as a MY 20113.

yes, dull. In regards to a facelift, it is dull. There is nothing that excites me about the facelift.

K-A is on the money. The S relied on gimmicks. Bulky fender flares, Maybach butt. And now those gimmicks are dating the car.

because I think most people on here would disagree with you.
Don't you mean, "IMO, I think most people on here would disagree with you."

The thought police are in full effect.

If you were to read it in the right context then perhaps you'd have realized that the fact that I stated "I think" is quite similar to "In my opinion." May be it is the reading comprehension police that should be in full effect. ;)

In all seriousness there's no way M-B would cut the Production short on this car by 1 year, that would be pretty catastrophic toward the cars legacy.

I seen the FL S-Class, and it is gorgeous, really gorgeous. IMO, that FL is fantastic, it gives the car a new freshness.

The W221 still looks very fresh, very attractive imo.

I saw my very first one in Nurburg, Germany yesterday, when I went to the Ring with three friends. It's a nice improvement. But still the same car with the same style. Not like the 3er sedan for example, where other backlights changed the whole car....

^lol what?

the S has new rear lights aswell

So how does new rear lights make the 3er a new car almost..
While not the S class?

If i were a pre-fLed 3er owner,I know I wouldnt be happy to see my car look that dated and even more worse next to the new one..:eusa_doh:
I like MB's approach better..not change the overall shape,on the same time let the old and new have their own characters..:usa7uh:

Seriously?
Like, maybe a completely different shape for the 3er making the whole back look different and much more agressive? Or the S-class where the shape is exactly the same but only the bars are gone and some LEDs are added?

^MBUSA already has the 2010 CL posted. Doesn't look like the facelift model either. Guess it will be a 2011 model....interesting Benz decided to wait that long. I don't know what Merc1 is going to do now. MB is holding on to the CL and the SLS.

Uh oh......The CL must be dire sales trouble for them to do this. They've never facelifted the S-Class and not the CL for the same model year. Yes the SL will be re-launched next spring as a 2011 model I guess the S-Class Coupe/CL will be also?

M

Why? The CL pretty much is in a class of it's own, and really doesn't need a facelift compared to e.g a Continental GT. There is very little competition in this class, so it's pretty logical that Mercedes is taking it's sweet time with the CL.

Well it was tradition, and with all the other cars out there from Aston, Bentley, Maserati, etc. it is anything but logical for them to take their time with the CL. Bentley just updated the buggers coupes so Mercedes needs to do the same.

Yea, I thought something was wrong too. Just seemed odd that it was taking them so long and MBUSA confirmed it.

I'm thinking now that they may wait until the L.A. show or even the Detroit show if the 2011 model year is where they're going with this. Don't know whats going on now.
