GLE [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLE (W167)

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.

Positive reviews so far of the new GLE especially the way it drives, ride and refinement and 450 engine have put this new car at the leading edge of this class. Other good points are the well built interior and space.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class First Drive: A Ph.D. In SUV

The reviews are good, really good. Looks like they've got the build quality right and the luxury drive down pat. Now time for the GLE53.

It sounds like it rides like an S-Class of SUVs. The brief has been met(y)

"As good as the driveline and resulting performance are, however, the manner in which the GLE 450 manages to mask its considerable size and weight with truly impressive handling traits while delivering a cossetting and pliant ride is arguably its crowning achievement.

Still, that’s not the end of it by any means. For those willing to option it, there’s also a so-called curve inclination function as part of an extended list of driving modes. Activated through the infotainment monitor, it uses a stereo camera mounted within the windscreen to scan the road and the air springs to lean the GLE 450 into corners. The amount of lean can be controlled within three different settings, with the most extreme providing sportscar levels of cornering speed and a level of purchase more akin to a well sorted sporting estate than a high riding luxury SUV. You can confidently place it and maintain a brisk pace over winding back roads without any untoward tyre squealing drama or premature interruption from the stability control system, which only actives when it really needs to rather than well in advance of any given situation like that of old GLEs.

Admittedly, it takes some while to become fully accustomed to the leaning effect, most notably upon turn-in which is a good deal sharper and more incisive than in the other driving modes, but with perseverance and the right road to exploit it you discover the GLE 450 4Matic delivers incredibly fluid handling traits that ensure its trick suspension will no doubt find its way on to other Mercedes-Benz models in the not-too-distant future."

Been reading a host of german and non-german reviews here in my office for a good hour now. I'm stunned by the results of the first test. Seems to be the best 'Benz Daimler has released this year and a homerun at top of that.

I'm very pleased with the SUVs the germans have come up with this year.

X5 = Persicion tool. The only SUV that drives like a sporty sedan. (y)

Touareg = Tempting allrounder with the capability to hunt potential Audi/BMW/Mercedes customers

Audi Q8 = The spaceship

GLE = Mercedes goes by old virtues and traditions. Super comfy and safe.

The last time the X5 and even the Cayenne were the sportiest SUV money can buy was 7 years ago. Since, the class below have remarkably improved to the level that keen drivers spend Cayenne money on the Macan and more recently the X3 M40i and GLC63 are better choices for athleticism.

Next year will be one of the best times to buy a new full sized SUV. The GLE, GLS, X5, X7, Toureg and facelifted Q7 will be in dealers world wide.

I'm glad that Mercedes have stuck to their guns and honed in on their USP which is comfort and luxury. It's two strong points that Audi have recently invaded with their highly refined Q7.

It's not totally accurate to write off the "GLE" as not being sporty. The GLE300, GLE350 and GLE450 may not be sport, but the GLE53 will be, as will the GLE63.

I'm glad Mercedes have produced a well built interior with this GLE, some of the reviewers saying its classier than anything else in the class, X5 included. For 5 passengers this car looks superbly spacious, with the air suspension and quite manners of the inline 6 the GLE 450 is the perfect choice with brilliant refinement and ride comfort. It also looks really great whether in standard trim or with the AMG trim.

Dissapointingly Mercedes will only sell it in the AMG trim in the UK which is a shame as I really like it in standard trim.

The base 4 cylinder diesel has lowered steel suspension however air suspension is a no cost option. Seems rather pointless that the air suspension isn't standard.

That's a really odd decision. Has it always been so?

Nope. the outgoing GLE was available in standard trim. It's equally as stupid at BMW UK's decision to not offer the luxury trim for the new 3-Series - it looked fantastic on the F30.

Further more adaptive dampers which was a £750 is now exclusively a part of the £2,200 M-Sport Plus package which requires.........you guessed it right.....the M-Sport package which commands a premium.

So if you want to buy an SE G20 but want adaptive dampers you need to spend an additional 20% or spend less money buy buying a 5-Series with can be specced with adaptive dampers for only £500 in SE spec.

I'm sure the models for sale at dealers will all come heavily specced anyway and have air suspension included as not having air suspension will probably ruin 2nd hand values

Maybe, maybe not...folks are reluctant to shell out big bucks to get that repaired down the line over the course of their ownership.

It's going to do a bang up business for Mercedes. Time for the GLE53 and GLE63 please.
