G-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz G-Class Facelift (W463)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.
What's wrong with the G's steering?

Everything. With handling and comfort everything is wrong too. And while the quality is indeed outstanding, the car itself just feels like a relic. I love it, but the new one will not look back.

Nope, my take on it is that they're going to gut the current body shell and give it a new interior, widen it about 4 inches for better stability and bring the suspension up to date for a better on road ride/handling balance. The exposed door hinges, upright windshield, bank vault door slam sound and construction, and the current G's other little character (elements/flaws) will remain but they will be refined so they can be more tolerable to more buyers.

M

The car will be all new. Only the looks will mimic the old one.

There is a lot of compromise in driving a G-Class.

When I first tried to drive it into our tightly spaced garage around a corner I did consider parking it on the street. Now I know every angle I need to hit to get it right.... As some people said, it can be tiring.

If there is no one shooting at you while trying to park your G-wagen, then it's first world problems! LOL!

I know it's not about luxury looks with the G professional, but man does the interior look low rent.

The interior of the G in general has been a big reason why could never justify buying one. Looks like that may change with incoming rework.

Body on frame will remain central to the G Wagen's character.

Rich people like body-on-frame SUVs, too.

That’s the takeaway from the runaway success of Mercedes-Benz’s high-dollar G Wagen (or G class as it’s called back in Deutschland), a box-on-wheels that’s been around in essentially the same form — and hand-built in the same Austrian plant — since 1979.

Despite threats from competitors inside and outside Mercedes’ walls that nearly killed the SUV, the G Wagen’s enduring can-do appeal has earned it wealthy fans around the globe.

Originally built for military and safari applications, the G Wagen in its first few decades entered the U.S. through gray-market importing. Death by discontinuation lurked every time global sales slowed.

So, too, did death by replacement. Mercedes’ first unibody crossover, the M class — now known as the GLE — was designed to replace the G class when the M went on sale in 1997.

Guethenke: Loyal customers kept truck alive.

“The M class was meant to be the successor, but the customer base of the G class was so loyal and continued to support the vehicle that it never came to this point,” Gunnar Guethenke, head of the G-class business unit at Daimler AG, told Automotive News.

Finally, in 2002, that loyalty and interest from well-heeled, self-styled adventurers led Mercedes to officially bring the squared-off beast to the U.S. as the G500 and G55 AMG, priced at $73,600 and $89,900 (not including shipping).

For the next decade it averaged around 1,000 units a year in the U.S. But after the recession passed and gasoline prices returned to orbit, the G Wagen took off, reaching a peak of 3,950 sales in 2016.

'Smile states'

Like other vehicles that depend on discretionary purchases (exotic and luxury cars, for example), the G Wagen is primarily sold in the “smile states” of the U.S.: Thirty seconds on the west side of Los Angeles tells you that California is its largest American market. California is followed by Texas, Florida and the New York-New Jersey region.

G Wagen buyers are the type that dealers and automotive CFOs alike dream about: They have the second-highest household income of any model Mercedes sells (behind the S-class coupe) and their earnings vastly outpace the incomes of buyers of any of the brand’s other crossovers and SUVs.

U.S. buyers have yet to cry mercy over the increasingly exorbitant asking price on the growing G Wagen lineup. The base is the $123,325 G550, followed by the AMG G63 that’s priced at $142,325, the recently added 621-hp V-12 AMG G65 that goes for $221,325 and the hulking, monster truck-like G550 4x4 with 17 inches of ground clearance that’s $225,925 (all prices include shipping).

This means the G Wagen is vastly profitable for Mercedes and dealers selling it. Guethenke wouldn’t say how profitable, though he pointed out it was enough to keep the model around for 38 years.

Overhaul in '18

Mercedes has plans to introduce a significantly overhauled version within the next year.

The refrigerator-box profile will carry over, though it will grow 4 inches wider for greater interior comfort and a new independent front suspension and downsized turbocharged six-cylinder engine is expected to be added.

But the body-on-frame setup? Look for that to continue since it’s central to the G Wagen’s character.

“We are convinced that there are three backbones for our off-road capabilities,” Guethenke said. “One of them is, for sure, our ladder-type frame.”

The other elements are the SUV’s trio of differential locks and its low-range gearing.

“Those three are the cornerstones that differentiate the G class from other off-roaders and that ensure both durability and off-road capability,” he added.

Will that independent front suspension mean less good at offroad?
M class from 1997 or first M class was body on frame, not unibody as it is written in that text.
And Wolfgang you could post some leaks?

Perhaps, however both the W461 and W463 Worker may continue. :)

Yes, Budd supplied the 264 lbs welded box section frame with two longitudinals and tripple cross members for the first M-Class. :)

And Wolfgang you could post some leaks?

Those are posted in this thread: :)

It might be, but it's keeping its locking diffs so it's probably going to be just fine. I expect the suspension to have lots of travel and I imagine they'll be employing some of the same trickery that keeps Range Rovers so capable as well.

No doubt, the interior of the new model is going to be day and night compared to the current G. It will be fully up to date featuring the latest infotainment, comfort and design language.

You'll be in for a treat, and I think a new G will look great on you in NYC :D
Just don't forget those bumper protectors ;)

Hopefully they will find some solution for wheel travel, but I am sceptic. They could make sway bar disconnect switch like Jeep made for Wrangler Rubicon? I think it would be win-win, they would keep same offroad capability with better on road performance, and one new option to brag about.

@Wolfgang we want more! :D
