Don't hate. I just want to know how to tell the difference between the front of the fl212 and the 213.

I remember that most diesel pipes were pointed downwards about 15-20 years ago. I was told then that it had to do with the exhaust being hotter than on the petrol engines, and that the pipes were turned downward to protect paint, plastic and such.
I think the exhaust pointed downwards is so the soot (diesel black dust) blows down into the ground instead of outwards into the vision of motorists driving behind and also will not collect on the back bumper and rear lights. This was probably more prominent in the 1970's/1980's when diesels of that time didn't have any catalytic converters or diesel particulate filters so would blow out alot of soot from their exhausts. I remember Mercedes introduced this downward turned exhaust tip on the W123 models in the 1970's.

Soot was definetly a big factor. Anyone who remember the diesels of the early 80's?

By then probably with the new I6 cylinder engine?
By the way, I've seen several driving already. IRL on the road it isn't hard to differ between W213 and W205. Even in black, I could tell right away it was a W213 (my wife thought it was a W205 (EDIT: W222) though ;))

It´s near impossible. Counts for the S class too, as all look virtually the same. You´ll only be able to tell the difference if you have a degree in car forums, or when you´re a die hard MB fan.

It´s simply near impossible. Every single person I talk to with know-how, has no clue when I show them the new E. They either think it´s a C or an S. Even when standing right in front of a parked one. The ones you've seen must have been taxis then ;) these will be easy to spot.

There is no way you can mistake a W222 for a W205. They look completely different on the road. The styling congruity is obvious, but the W222 is regal in its stature, the W205 sportily compact.

I can't comment on the W213 as i haven't seen one in person yet.

True, but it's just damn difficult when you don't have any reference. The sheer size difference between the C and S is the only way to see it, imo. And with the E in between the two, it's just more difficult.

Yes, could be the new I6, although it's only a rumor so far. :)

I am not sold on the new E. I was in Europe a couple of weeks ago and saw a lot of new E's in Berlin. They looked nice in a very inoffensive way; but it was difficult to distinguish them from the C's at least from a distance. The interior however looked very impressive and expensive. Overall though I was not impressed. It's a very lazy effort in the part of the designers.

However, at the risk of going off topic; the new C coupe looks brilliant in the flesh. Pictures do not do it justice at all, but I bet it still has the vague steering that every Benz is known to have
