E-Class (W213) [Official] Mercedes-Benz E-Class W213

The W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sold from 2016 as a 2017 model. It succeeded the W212/S212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63S versions of the W213 have been available as well from 2016 (as a 2017 model), and these are the only versions with V8 engines.
This is interesting to me...

So the exhaust turbine is variable geometry (which is cute as always) but what's that stuff surrounding the turbine casing? Ceramic for heat insulation? @Wolfgang?

Interesting. Hadn't noticed it yet. In addition to heat insulation, might also be NVH related to help shape the sound emanating from the engine compartment. Instead of a high rpm zzzzZZZZZzzzzzzZZ hornet more like a powerful MB typical brabble-brabble-brabble -- within limits set by physics. Here's a larger pic. :)

I wonder if these pre collusion systems are smart enough to account for brake and tire wear when calculating the time/distance to apply the brakes to prevent contact.

It wont. The way the systems works is by requesting maximum brake torque at the wheels when the sensors detects a collision is imminent. The stopping distance do depends on the surface type, tyre and brake wear.

This insulation could help to keep the heat inside the casing (reduce heat loss) and also reduce turbo lag.

I looked at some turbo insulation material and one site were advertising them selling covers for turbo casings and outlet

Custom fit T3, T4, T6 & T25/T28 Titanium Turbo Shields with LR Technology provide the ultimate means of reducing turbo lag while serving as a superior heat barrier - shielding and protecting engine components, hoods and painted surfaces and offers a very cool looking carbon fiber look.

Made from pulverized volcanic rock then strained into a fiber material, Titanium Turbo Shields can withstand direct heat up to 1800 F and 2500 F radiant heat. This means retaining more heat in the turbine and less damaging underhood heat. The result is a cooler air intake temperature and a boost in horsepower!

Stronger and more durable than other turbo blankets or shields, Titanium Turbo Shields include a hi-temp rated silica insulation padding under the tight outer layer for extra added protection against extreme turbo-generated heat.

  • Anchoring hooks incorporated to secure shield
  • Custom fit for easy install
  • Ultimate thermal barrier reduces turbo lag
  • LR Technology to prolong lifespan of shield
  • Hi-Tech custom carbon fiber look
  • Improved durability against abrasions, temperatures, and vibration
  • Available as SHIELD ONLY or in a KIT. Each Kit Includes: Shield, 2” x 15 ft roll of Titanium wrap, Two 20” stainless steel zip ties & 5 ft of fastening wire

This is crazy, we don't even have a DOG for the new E yet.

Yeah the lack of U.S. model information is frustrating. They really need to detail the rest of the engine lineup soon. I hope we get something at Geneva. I have a feeling that the E43 will just be a pumped up (400hp) version of the current turbo V6 and then we'll have to wait until the 2018 model year for the new I6 engines. If that is the case then I don't see what they're waiting on. The GLC/GLC43 Coupe, C43 coupe and E43 should be shown now. Does your store have deposits for the new E already? What do you think about and what has been the reception to the S Cabrio?

I'm actually thinking the first year models will be smaller gas and diesel engines, with the bigger I6 engines coming later. It's possible that the engine is a little late in development.

If not, I'd say, be patient, because this car is definitely worth waiting for, and the E43 will be a home run!

We knew that Frenchie, wanted some inside info lol. What is the story with the S Cabrio? Any orders/interest yet? What about the facelifted SL and the AMG GT, base model?

I did get the product launch info and it looks like the only thing for calendar year 16 is the E300 (June), which I assume is the turbo four. If so, extremely disappointing. I've already had a customer renege on her order because of no 6 cyl (she has E350 now).
Not seeing a lot of stirring on the S cab at this point. I'm skeptical, at least for our market. I can see it doing well in markets where there are lots of Bentleys, but I don't expect we'll see sales of more than one a quarter.

And once again Mercedes dangles the carrot on the C diesel. We were promised diesels for 16. Turns out only California will get it for MY16 and not until May, with MY17 coming in August (when other markets should get diesel).

BTW, the vehicles showing a "43" launch this calendar year are the SLC (June) C coupe and cab (Sept), and the GLC (Sept).

Thanks Frenchie and TennMB, your participation here is greatly appreciated and needed.

I guess we will find out the hp numbers for the "43" models in a few days. I'm going to be disappointed if it is the same 362hp as the "450" cars out now and the SLC43, but I suspect it will be unless they're all going to be upgraded for MY17. The SLC43 is already a 2017 car though so.....

M

A Daimler representative has already confirmed that the E43 will get 295kW. I don't expect the other cars to be upgraded anytime soon though. The C450 is already the most powerful car compared to direct competitors (340i/S4).

The E43 on the other hand has to compete with S6 and BMW 550i m-pack. Both cars have more powerful V8s under the hood.
