You said urself,the E is the most boxy coz it's a sedan while the E coupe and CLS,ODC ect were all coupe and convertibles so naturally they are more curved.

Following that tradition i believe the next S will be boxy coz it's a sedan..

I doubt Mercedes-Benz would do that. The C-class is perfect and so is the S-class. The E-class is the only one sporting a box like figure. Only time will tell, but I personallly will be extremely disappointed in Mercedes-Benz if they develop a box. That was fine for the W140, but for this time...hell no.

Not that I'm, saying the E-class is horrible, but that boxy trunk is old school. I've seen so may comments online other then here comparing to a hyundai and I almost can see a similarity. And that is bad.

The current S-class is absolute perfection. Why would they go with the following cycle -

W140 (boxy) - W220 (Curves) - W221 (More Curves) - W222 (Boxy)

That wouldn't make sense. Of course none of us know what would happen, but I would hate to see a box happen.

Don't worry man, MB's future is not boxy. The next cars will be roundish, I remember an interview with an MB "big boy" stating that MB will go into the bio trend and go for more curves in the future.

This was displayed by the F700.

I kinda like boxyness... I'm the meaning that an MB sedan should be rigid and clean, but... times are changing.
I never liked the roundish generation that much (203, 220 and co), while the W211 looks splendid after the FL in some colours. But too roundish nonetheless for me.

The C-Class is imo the most beautiful current MB sedan, it's just rigid enough without being too cold. I love it. Interior's quite as good though.

The E-Class looks cool, and very good in AVG. Can be a bit rear-heavy with small wheels, Elegance/basic and clear colours, but that's the case of every modern cars.

Actually, I love the fenders on the S-class. They probably will loose them, but they look outstanding on the current model. It really makes the car stand out like never before.

If you look at the 7 series and Audi 28 they look so plain on the side compared to the S-class.

I really hope they go back to smooth, curvaceous and round designs, as IMO that look is what M-B proved they can do better than anyone, and that's the generation of M-B that made me a huge fan. The boxy look on the new E looks too anonymous in some areas, everyone's doing the box thing right now, it's just gonna be a passing phase and look SUPER outdated (like the 80's boxy cars did when the 90's and 00's came around), along with less timeless than their curvy counterparts IMO.

Also, IMO BMW were the ones who set the new design trend for auto's in this time-period, with creases and gimmicks all over, now M-B has made their most creased and time-specific design ever with the E, and BMW has pulled the rug and put out a smooth and curvy 7-Series.... We'll see if BMW keeps everyone copying them.

I agree the C is the best executed design by M-B, although I'm not too big on the car personally (driving one now), worst and cheapest interior I'd ever imagine M-B would construct, and lacks in some refinement IMO. Nonetheless, a great design and execution (regardless of my personal taste toward it), even better than the 221 IMO which has some sloppy elements to go along with the beautiful ones.

If the next 5 follows suit with the new 7, and with M-B creating this super angular and hard-lined E, I may have to jump ship too in the future if I'm in the market for this segment

Interesting post. There is no way the C-Class has the worst-ever Mercedes interior. The first generation ML takes that honor and runs away with it. Sure there are some plastics that aren't the best, but overall I think its a solidly built, if a little spartan interior. I've driven the W204 enough times now to know the car inside and out (unfortunately that means I've had to have a loaner car!).

I don't think Mercedes copied BMW on anything with the E. Mercedes' designs have been getting fussier for a few years now anyway and I'd dying to see the E in person to really judge it.

The problem for me is that Mercedes' designs were clean and unfussy and most of all they were never wheel-size and color dependent. The W124, W210 even the W220 looked good with small wheels and they didn't need to be in a certain color or have the AMG pack in the case of the W220.

I don't want to see them go boxy again, but the GLK and E's roofline says that is what they're doing. Just pray that they don't fussy up the next SL, which is the next new model coming.

At the end of the day for me I don't care who did what and who set this and all these deep theories about styling and what not....all that matters is that the car has a cohesive, distinctive, good looking design when I park it in my driveway. In the end that is all that matters.

I really hated those cars... But the new one is atleast not as box. The C-class is truely a much better designed car then the new E-class (But I do like the front of the new e-class better).

You're right, the 204's interior says "durability" and it's a smart move for that segment. Maybe I just compare it to my 211's too much which is unfair considering the large price difference. Yeah I've spent quite some time in those Loaners, but just always have a displeasure driving it for some reason. Things I most notice from it are: the sandpaper-y like A-Pillar and roofline material, the flimsy and hard-ish dash (makes a cheap sound if you knock on it) and certain other plastics, the design I'm not personally fond of, not so great seat material, and low-fi, kinda cheesy graphics on the radio display screen (non Nav).

Anyway, that's just IMO.

But yeah, all in all I agree with you in what I want in a car, I guess I'll just have to wait until one knocks my socks off enough to move into it.

Only Boxy Benz I loved was the S-class (W140). Cars look better boxed when their BIG. The E-class is a mid-size so it looks more boxed in.

I wouldn`t call any Merc boxy. Thay are more anglular looking. The term boxy goes to the Volvo 760-740. That car was the king of boxy design all the way around.

The W124 was revolutionary for it`s time and really broke a lot of grown design wise.

Agreed, that pic shows off to me how much more I like the 211 design and how much more timeless I think it will be.

Also, those are kind of unfair pics to use against each other, the W212's is a heavily airbrushed/cleaned pic with an AMG pack, tinted windows, etc. The W211's is a regular Sports Package version and is basically a plain real life pic.

This is a better comparison IMO: The W211 IMO is such a near flawless design.... Hard to top.
