CLS (C257) [Official] Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (C257)

The C257 Mercedes-Benz CLS is the third generation of the CLS range of four-door sedan, launched in 2018 as the successor to the Mercedes-Benz CLS (C218). Production: January 2018 – August 2023. Model years: 2019–2023.
The official pictures have done nothing to sway me - I still think the car looks "odd". There's a lack of fluidity in design as your eyes make their way from the front to the rear of the car.

Alas, this segment isn't for me so my opinion counts for little. But if I were buying, I'd spend my money on the A7/S7.

Oh, boy, I am going to offend a lot of people now...

First of all, I ain't eating my words,

because not only did I say weeks ago that this will be a pretty car (thanks to the signature CLS silhouette),

but I am also sticking to my view that

(i) the front and rear lights are hideous and a major step down from C218 (and inconsistent with the overall elegant and fluid theme of the car), and

(ii) the lack of a side character line makes the car much more ... mundane.

Don't blame the matte grey color. When was the last time a truly gorgeous car design was ok with all other colors but just unable to rock the matte grey color? Everything else is OK, but, man, it's gotta be that infamous beauty-hiding matte grey color, right? No. The only issue with the first photos was because they showed the front and rear more than the side view and therefore accentuated the "weaknesses" of this design. The new ones, well, are "glamor shots". If there is one thing that automakers are quite good at, it's the glamor shots for new releases.

The car reminds me of an overweight Keanu Reeves.

Grow a well trimmed beard, throw on a turtle neck and a nicely tailored jacket, he will still kick your (and my) ass.

It's been a long time since I've seen opinions on a car's design be so polarizing. Not just here, across the web and social media.
Which, in my book, is a good thing. Many classic designs were polarizing at introduction. As time passed, they became true classics. To not astray too much, but I do remember very vividly the uproar at the introduction of the C219. Many thought of it's design as being the beginning of the end of Mercedes-Benz design. And those who said: simply wow. In my opinion we've got here, with our new CLS, a future classic...

The female at the presentation said and I quote
The new cls.. the pioneer of our new design language.

Yay fun times hahaha

^ Yes, that was Britta Seeger. :)

More "like" than "love", the C257 CLS does look very nice in this particular shot.

I suspect that my perception of the C257 will be similar to how I personally perceive the C238. Very dependent on the configuration with impressions ranging from "stunning" to "a bit bland".

No problem with the rearlights in this angle too,the only concern is looking from straight rear angle IMO,which have to check out later in real!

Well, for me I think it looks...

[waaaaiiiit-ah!]

Bloody marvelous.

On the exterior front, there's hardly anything of significance that I can describe as being offensive or controversial.
Mercedes Benz prepped us with their new design language for the headlights & canted-forward grill theme together with the revised approach to smoothing the sheetmetal and we didn't lose our shit back then. So what's the problem now? I also find no issue with the rear and the taillights - I feel they're smart, individual and, again, inoffensive.

The car's stance on the front 3/4 view is fabulous - squat and muscular yet bewitchingly smooth and elegant at the same time. And, like the E-Class and E-Coupé, I feel that photos won't do as much justice compared with the in-the-metal experience. Mercedes Benz is forging ahead with a new design direction - some may not like it - but there's no denying that it's entirely theirs. Watch this space for a raft of imitation.

Interior: well, I just can't get my head around Merc's double-tablet instrument panel. It's so flat and lacking in relief/depth. Maybe I need to experience it in real world motoring but to my mind it's really a bit two-dimensional, surface-level aesthetic. I believe the recessed instrument binnacles of the BMW and Audi are not only more practical (better shielded) but also nicer to look at.
Barring my personal and entirely subjective misgivings, the interior is beyond reproach even if it does play out a now common (cost-saving) trend of interior sharing.

Here's the clincher for me: asked to choose between an A7 vs the CLS - it'll be the latter without hesitation. That new straight six hooked into 9G-Tronic through the rear wheels... easiest decision.

Any my final word - not to start a bun fight but to genuinely put forward the notion from a competition perspective - if Mercedes has this and Audi has the A7, where does this leave BMW?
Is their decision to solely pursue the - essentially incomparable - 6er GT as a totally different concept a better one from a bottom line perspective? Will there / should there be a BMW direct competitor in this class?

Bravo Mercedes Benz. Bravo. :eusa_clap

Fellow forum member Busty recently alluded to the high probability of BMW introducing a G11-sized (in length. Increased width and diminished height) 4 door coupe which could bear the 8 GC nomenclature...or...perhaps be that elusive 9 series offering. I would be of the impression that this car will be positioned at least one segment above that of the A7 or CLS.

And fellow contributor SKY recently maintained that the G30 5 series sedan, in suitable configuration, could be considered an adequate A7/CLS competitor. I see his point and am inclined to agree.

At this point of time, I don't envision BMW directly confronting the A7 or CLS with some sort of "5er GC sedoupe".

But hey-I'll gracefully stand corrected LOL.

With the picture, I agree with another member who stated car looks better without AMG pack. The horizontal "fins" in air intakes run the fluidity of the car and don't suit it well.
