Golf Official: Golf MK.VI

This really is more like a facelift reading through this thread. It reminds me of the audi A4 B6-B7 situation in a way. I would expect that the so called facelift of this mk6 golf will feature a radical redesign, like how so the audi b8 will apparently have.

The Seat leon will be getting a facelift next year, wonder what that will look like.

I find this VW boring but not as bad as people make out. Prefer the rear end of the old one though for sure.

after looking at the pics for a while, it seems that this is more the successor of the Golf IV. if you see that car as a golf V, its a good evolution, but as golf VI its really dated.

the passat cc does have some nice rearlight design, why go blackward ? (are those even LEDs ?)

the UP! features a new stylish vw front, whats up with that ?

they could at least have tried to make the headlights more interesting with some christmas leds...

I guess I am amongst the few that actually like it. The back could have been better done, but overall still a good looking car. Only critique is that it looks wayy too similar to the sirocco speaking of which, where does the sirocco fit into the lineup? is it above or below the golf 6?

Looking forward to the GTI!

Handsome car, but as always with VW's bloody boring!
the car came 7 years too late. It's what the Glof V should've looked like.

front is nice, very agressive

back looks boring, very chinese-ish

VW need to hire a pro creative marketing team to make this sell :D j/k

Perhaps they could transfer some people from BMW...:D

Seriously now , i don't like it very much , it looks already dated , Eos and Passat CC look better.

I was comparing the ordinary Golf MK VI with the MKV GTI ;)
And only by looks btw (you can see the the behind of the two aren't
very different both got the 30 edition rearbumper.

on the GTI the rear windo is kind of curved while on the VI it's strait.
so dead in a way.

Golf VI GTI - renderings

europeans dont want a 3.6 litre veedub. they need to go back to the 2.0T

I ain't in Europe. If VW is serious about the U.S. market then they need to ditch the 3.2L V6 for the R version.

It's been said before Yannis. Remember these press release pictures of Golf V? I remember clear as daylight back at GCF everyone saying how dull and unimaginative the Golf 5 was. "It looks big and bloated" everyone said. "Look at that MPV-like roofline! How on earth will they be able to pull off a GTI version?"
And so it went on.

Now, comparing it with this, it's clear that that the Golf VI is as much of an evolution of the terrific Golf V as we'd already expected! Where's the surprise and why all the negativity?

But no, it's dull and boring and outdated you all tell me? This is a Golf. A plain old cooking version at that and it's this conservative, no-fuss approach to Golf design that has made it the most enduring and recognised hatchback in history. I can assure you, it will continue to hold its own and remain the class benchmark for the years to come.

Interestingly, the Golf V GTI is widely appreciated as the best looking GTI since the MK II and equally the most complete GTI we've ever seen. It's a testament to the current MK V underpinnings that the GTI is a success and it certainly bodes well that Golf VI builds on this foundation rather than taking a backward step in terms of engineering quality and sophistication like so many of its competitors did.

I criticized the Golf V, and unfortunately it never made me chan ge my mind (especially not when I felt the interior)... The V is a design-catastrophe. They messed-it up big time, everytime I see one I feel sorry for it. To be honest, when I see a IV and a V parked next to each other, it's the V who looks old and boring, not the IV. I never regreated any second my decision to buy a Golf IV instead of a V.

This VI looks way better, thank God the awful bloated rear is gone and the side is less plain now. The VI looks clearly better than both the IV and the V. It's quite elegant, not bloated or dull. But still quite unimaginative. The interior looks quite bad though, the center console is much too high making the whole heavy and plain. Like the V. The same kind of interior you see in a Vito.

However, my concern is: how will it compare to the new gen of the competitors? This one looks like it's trailed by the competition.

The competition was one gen ahead of the V in terms of design, and I fear it will repeat with the VI, who (for me) only catched up the modernity and appeal of the current gen of Megane, Astra and Focus (well this one is no beauty).

The Golf VI looks perfectly good NOW. What will it be in a pair of years against a renewed competition? It will need to be renewed too. This car can't last 6+ years for me.

That is why I criticize it. It doesn't look like it can face the new gen of competition. They should've made it more modern, change it a lil'bit more than that.

Julius. I'm convinced that you've got an attention span disorder! :D

Surely you mean that you'd rather have this lovely interior from the MK VI (6)!?!

... over the Golf MK V's still rather nice interior:

Julius::t-crazy2::eusa_sile:all_cohol:bonk::sorry::nopity:

Correct or the fact that yesterday I was a bit screwed!
But you are 110% right :) that was excatly what I was trying to say..
and btw for the record, the Golf has allready grown on me, I think
it will look quite good IRL.

Come to think of it, Golf MK VI = Scirocco before facelift ;)

@ Julius: LOL - "I ain't going in no plane crazy sucka fool!" :D

@ raoul:

Maybe my wife and I are just too typical of VW Golf customers. But if you're telling me that the new Golf VI has something to worry about from this abomination:

Then, clearly I should be paying more attention to FrenchCarZone.com! :D

As for the Astra - I can't remember when last I read any positive press in relation to the accolades heaped on the Golf. Everyone knows that this current Astra feels and drives exactly like the previous generation upon which it is based. A low-tech car compared with the Golf. Opel have got a long way to go to catch up with the Golf - not the other way round. This is common knowledge out there.

The Focus, well it's a great rival to the Golf. It's relatively conservative looks are closest in appeal to those who are fans of the Golf. The sad and sorry truth is, most VW buyers would never consider buying a Ford. (I would of course...)

The interesting thing is that, the makers of both the Astra and Focus, namely Opel and Ford are both owned by loss-making parent companies. I wouldn't mind seeing some European sales figures for Golf vs its competitors. I know that here in SA the Golf outsells both the Focus and the Astra handsomely.

It looks awesome IMO.

The headlights seem to be a homage to the Golf IV giving us the traditional subtly sporty yet subtle classy appearance.

Imho, it looks really nice. It will look even better in person. I'm pretty sure the GTI MK VI is going to look terrific! Btw, there is no need of using a 3.6L engine in a car of the Golf's size. Gas prices are extremely high and downsizing is a very good option to keep fuel consumption low. No wonder Mercedes created the Dies-Otto engine. :t-cheers:

I had an Opel Astra cdti 150. Apart from the bad reliability, this car is superior in many aspects to the Golf V. The motors were noticeably more refined and silent, the interior is ten times classier and has materials that are a thousand times better, ans its design is ten times more appealing. The steering was heavier, the gearbox too hard, and the suspension a bit on the hard side too (was a sport model). The impression of this car is similar to the impression of the Golf IV: it feels like a much bigger, more expensive car.

The Golf V I testdrove was noisy (motor and wind), had perfect steering and gearbox feeling, an average finition but cheap materials, was slightly more comfortable than the Opel, a lot roomier. Much better egonomics too. A nice place to work and to live with, but no "classy-feeling" at all.

The Renault Megane is in the same time hundreds of time more comfortable, and hundred of times sportier in its drivetrain. The finish is crap as are many of the materials, and it is quite cramped inside. The motors (in diesel) are very silent but quite weak. The steering is an abomination, and the gearbox is bad. I won't say anything about its reliability:D.

I sat in the last Focus (not FL). The finish is the worst I ever saw in any car. It is absolutely schocking. This car is as poorly finished as an old Citroën Visa or a Lada Niva. Panel gaps are enormous in the interior, there are inserts od soft materials in the slash of hard plastic, everything feels cheap. I did not even testdrove it.

All this to say that the Golf V is a good car, but that its competition are good too. The Golf is roomy, very reliable, economical. But the Opel is classier, the Renault has a better drivetrain... the Golf is averagely good, in every aspect except the diesel motors who were clearly outclassed, so it was the first choice of many. It was not the obvioyus better car like the previous generations of Golf used to be.

For raoul: Ja ja - 10 times better here and a thousand(!) times better there. How much more subjective do you want to get? How does an interior look "10 times" better? Wait - don't answer...

I find your personal observations to be overly critical of the Golf. I will be the first to notice that the lower reaches of both the Golf and the Focus dashboards and centre consoles have hard, cheaper looking plastics than the soft touch plastics on the dashtop. But to say that it's absolutely shocking in the Focus? Odd. You must surely be talking about Focus MK I? The Golf V is far better screwed together than its forebear however, despite the more liberal use of harder plastics where it doesn't really matter. Both of my MK IV GTIs rattled and shook, the overly soft but brittle front suspension was prone to bottoming out and the rear-end was dull and inert. My drives in a GTI MK V proved that the new car was chalk-and-cheese better in the areas where it counted.

An Opel is classier than a Golf??? This has to be the first time anyone in the world has said this. Between us, my wife and I have owned 3 Opels and we will never buy one again.

Anyhow, your experiences and your personal opinions are yours.

I'm still having fun surfing the web looking for reviews where most articles reaffirm my assertion that the Golf V is still the class leader.

So, there's no reason why a Golf VI can't hold it's own for the next 4 or so years. I don't see any other carmaker introducing a new model that's going to turn the hatchback market (in this segment) on its head.

The new Astra and Focus will never surpass the Golf in the image and desirability stakes.
The next Megane will be too individual for most tastes and will fall apart in 2 years like most Renaults.
The Peugeot 308 is here and it's rubbish for the next 4-5 years.
The next Alfa 14? will be too much "Forza Italia!" and not enough "Sense and Sensibility"
The BMW 1er will always be in a premium (snobbish) class of its own with limited man-on-the-street appeal.
The Toyota Auris has five star reliability but zero star personality.
The Mazda 3 is the poor Japanese cousin to the Focus.
The next-gen Audi A3 will be better than Golf 6 but as always at a premium.
The SEAT Leon will always be the dodgy half sister of Spanish descent.

So, there you go 10 models and reasons why the Golf will retain its position at the head of the class of people's hatchbacks. In my humble opinion of course.
