What I can't believe is how this face made it through all the design reviews? Didn't even one single soul have the balls to stand up and throw up?

BMW, Subaru's taken a leaf out of the book you wrote on lightweight, dynamic RWD driving pleasure. Now it's time to take a leaf out of their book; the one they wrote on knee-jerk, rapidly implemented facelifts! :D

I gotta admit that I like this car, a lot actually. The new 1 is probably one of the most unphotogenic cars ever but it works in the flesh.

Best regards,
south

I concur - to an extent - the new 1er does pull it back a little in the metal. But it's still not an attractive face by any means.

I would like to see this car in Estorilblue and M-package. Thanks in advance!

OK, the car is definitely not one of the most attractive cars on the planet - but neither was E87. And neither are many other cars.

But to call it ugly? C'mon! It actually looks very good in motion. As most BMW does anyway. :)

It definitely works in the metal - much, much better than in photos. Especially in metallic colors, even better in dark ones. I've seen quite of them now, and I must say the car stands out - just like E87 did. Mostly due RWD proportions - which is unique in this segment (the "infamous" shoe-like silhouette), and also the surfacing is very prominent - as we are used in the case of modern BMW cars. It certainly has modern styling yet it's still somehow conservative - or better said: familiar. But still different enough from the rest of BMW model line-up to stand out.

Headlights are big but not as big as many tend to claim.

Of about dozen F20s I've seen only 2 of them were driven by male drivers - and for 2 I'm not sure :D So, I guess girls quite like the car. :)

Oh, c'mon. Sure tastes are different. For some the car is ugly, some love it. It sells extremely well - so quite some people love / like the car, or at least are OK with it's look.

Check the sales numbers - available on BMW press & corporate sites.
F20 sells about 20% better in the first months of sales than E87 did in its first sales months back then in 2004/2005.
Also the Y-to-Y sales comparison shows that F20 is selling about 17% better than the outgoing E87 - and mind (compared to F20) the E87 engine model range was wider a year ago + it was available in all markets while F20 still has to hit some.

My problem with the new 1er is not the front. With the right color and xeon lights the car looks great in motion but its the rear thats my problem with the car. Simply doesnt look good, neither is flowing very well.

I hope the 2:er looks nothing like the 1:er. Front and rear need to change a lot! But as everything under the skin seems just aces, I'm not worried :D

The BRZ (or whatever the name is) can only wish it drives as good as the M135i...but yea, a facelift is much much needed.

The F20 is not just ugly, no. It's FUGLY.
But you're saying that when the wheels start spinning, the looks magically change or something?

And I do not want to hear any bad words about the E87. That car is a stunning BMW :D

F20 looks like a bad joke, or some weird concept that didn't quite make it. Just horrible...

Hah! You too now huh? :D
Maybe I have to start walking around with my laptop in my hands while looking at the pictures of the F20, then ;)

Here, this car here is pure art. Stunning when on the move, standing still and even upside down:

You know what they say about opinions...everyone has one. ;)

Yea, it's the same with assholes. Everyone has one :)

Still, the one is more ugly than the other.

The production car in 3dr 135i format is in Estoril Blue for the official photographs and media presentation.
I like the 1er , I like that it is distinctive and individual and does not share the same face and headlight outline as multiple other contenders in which "apply your badge here" so they become completely anonymous and blend into the background at least with the 1er there is no chance of that happening. In terms of sales however the Sportline outsells the Urban line as the 1er of choice.

I have not driven the M135i yet, but some who have say that the car is a worthy icon for M.Performance Automobiles with its bespoke chassis set-up , responsive steering , agile dynamics and noticeable thrust.

You´dont need to post pictures of E87. I have one standing outside my window ;)

I'd take F20/21 over E87/81 any time. Put these two cars together - in metal, same color! eg dark blue - and it's obvious F20 looks more mature, more upscale, more elegant, more modern, even bit more aggressive than E87 which in direct live comparison to F20 - at least to me - looks too cartoonish. Yet E87 look seem to ooze more sportiness than F20 does, i admit that.

The side F20's profile looks much better than E87's. The rear is a bit dull - mainly due to unimaginative rear lights graphics - yet aggressive enough. The front is surely more commanding than the one on E87. E87 is kind of cute, while F20 has more bad-ass look.

In the styling / design solutions used in the surfacing - F20 is definitely more interesting & innovative.

I like it.

Sure it's not best contemporary BMW design, but surely not the worst (contenders: preLCI E83 X3- rear + front, preLCI E84 Z4 - front, preLCI E65 7er - as a whole, preLCI E46 3er Compact - front & rear, BMW Z3 coupe - side profile + rear etc)
