BMW 5er Mini-Facelift G30 (2019): Cockpit-Update, G31, F90 - autobild.de

According to this AutoBild article, all BMW 5er models starting with production of July 2019 will receive a 'mild' interior update (which is already visible in the configurator):
It consists of the 'Live Cockpit with its full digital instrument cluster' and an update to the 'BMW Operating System 7.0' . Although its updated to version 7.0 not all functions (known from the more current models) will be available. Full functionality will become available with the full LCI in 2020.

How so? I used the Idrive 7 and it’s not as fancy as claimed, but it’s not bad

I'm in the middle of a trip from Bucharest to Phoenix, so I don't have time to go into detail, but off the top of my head...

1) On-board computer now only has one manually resetable function now. Used to be "Trip Computer" and "On-board computer". Now it is just "individual" that can be manually reset.

2) The middle of the instrument cluster is just utterly wasted in terms of the sat nav. It has that pathetic basic map which is useless. You can't change the scale or show any other kind of map. It's really basic. You have this huge screen real estate which is being completely wasted. Compare that to the virtual cockpit from Audi. Seriously, it's a joke.

3) The info you REALLY want to see, such as the speedo and the rev counter is pushed out to the side making it harder to see. There is no needle eminating from the middle of the dial. It's just really poor design.

4) The widgets which are displayed within the instrument cluster just look really basic. The current fuel consumption, for example, is just a small, basic graph. Just looks really poor.

5) When you put the main iDrive screen into split screen mode, you have far less choice as to what can be shown in the smaller display. Next to nothing really.

6) The menu structure of the new iDrive is just not intuitive, but I am prepared to give this more time.

There are many more things I don't like about the new iDrive and LIVE COCKPIT. I'll maybe talk more about it when I post my initial thoughts on my new X5.

I'm driving an A-Class at the moment with the MBUX, and it's the complete opposite of the LIVE COCKPIT and iDrive. Pretty much everything is configurable, unlike with BMW where you have to accept so many restrictions. The digital cockpit in my F30 318i is far superior to the LIVE COCKPIT.

@KokkenTor You disagree. So, I assume you've experienced the LIVE COCKPIT yourself? What exactly do you disagree about?

I wonder who approved the idea of functionality that is half-finished? :dazed053::eusa_doh::eusa_doh:

Actually, that's exactly how I would describe LIVE COCKPIT. "Unfinished". I'm sure it's possible to make it much more configurable, but you just can't yet. God knows why they've launched it when it clearly feels about 50% complete.

I guess he just disagrees with your personal ideas regarding the subject. Which is what they are, your personal preferences.

My view is that a digital cockpit is the only way forward. Live Cockpit will be getting fine tuning with actual buyer feedback like yours, so I wouldn't worry much. It's all updatable software. But people like yourself (and me) who have been used to the same layout for decades will need adjusting, there is no doubt of that. But the new age youngsters will not.

I was hoping he'd enlighten us to why he thinks it's ok. Maybe there's something I'm not getting. I wondered what experience he's had with the LIVE cockpit and the new iDrive. Or, like in the last few months, he's just hitting "disagree" because it's me.

I agree. These "digital" cockpits are the way forward. I just hope BMW makes some updates pretty soon. I haven't driven my X5 much so far, but in a month maybe I'll feel differently.

Perhaps evolutionary and a representative of an "older school" BMW design paradigm, the G30/31 5ers (along with the G20/21 3ers) are the most visually attractive 4/5 door BMW offerings. And save that LCI grill, the G11 7er is very nice as well.

I know this isn't really on topic for the 5er, although it's in the context of it receiving the LIVE COCKPIT, so I'll continue. After spending another 1,000km in my X5, I've not changed my opinion on the LIVE COCKPIT. It looks fancy but it's a step backwards in practical use. The worst of the big three.

Where I come from it would be described as "all fur coat and no knickers".

This passed me by in September, and I can't see it posted anywhere else, but BMW have already announced the introduction of 48v mild-hybrid technology, and it will debut on the 520d. We knew it would debut on that but I thought it would be with the LCI next year.

This is the press release from September...

BMW 5 Series: mild-hybrid technology for extra sprinting power and efficiency.

In autumn 2019, BMW will present another element in its powertrain electrification strategy to accompany the ongoing expansion of its plug-in hybrid line-up. Mild-hybrid technology will make its debut in the BMW 5 Series, where it will help to both lighten the combustion engine’s workload and boost its power, meaning not just superior efficiency but sharper performance. Fitting an extremely powerful 48V starter-generator and a second battery significantly enhances the functionality of Brake Energy Regeneration by enabling the energy recuperated when braking or on the overrun to be harnessed not just for powering electrical vehicle functions, but for generating additional drive power. For this, the 48V starter-generator acts likes an electric drive unit that assists the engine, allowing the latter to operate within an efficiency-optimised load range as frequently as possible. An electric overboost function, meanwhile, injects an extra dose of dynamism when accelerating under full throttle.

The 48V starter-generator has the additional benefit of allowing the engine to be switched off with remarkably little vibration and restarted more smoothly when using the Auto Start Stop function. This also makes it possible to completely shut off the engine in coasting mode, rather than just disconnecting it from the drivetrain. As of November 2019, mild-hybrid technology will be fitted as standard on the BMW 520d Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 4.1 – 4.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 108 –112 g/km), BMW 520d xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 4.5 – 4.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 117 – 123 g/km), BMW 520d Touring (fuel consumption combined: 4.3 – 4.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 114 – 118 g/km) and BMW 520d xDrive Touring (fuel consumption combined: 4.7 – 4.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 124 – 128 g/km). The fuel consumption figures of the 140 kW/190 hp four-cylinder diesel engine that powers this quartet of models will be cut by up to 0.3 litres per 100 kilometres as a result.
