Went and saw, experienced and test drove the new G30 at the BMW dealer. Here are my first impressions:
1. Wow - the photos do not do this car justice. I don't understand how some may mistake it with the F10. It looks much more athletic in person and actually looks smaller than the F10. Has real beauty in the design. Proportions are spot on. If anything, maybe I would have preferred some smaller and more aggressive headlights.
2. You do not need the M sport pack in order for it to look good (ala f10)
3. Base wheels are actually quite nice an sufficient - unlike the base wheels on the f10 which were an embarrassment.
4. The rear light look really slim in person, sporty and elegant.
5. Interior design - looks like a step or two steps up compared to the F10. OK, it doesn't have the wow factor of the new E class design wise, nor the luxury of the new 7er. However it is a balanced, elegant and fresh enough design that will make 5 series buyers very happy.
6. Interior quality - Superb!! better than an E class. However not a 7er. Much much better than older BMW models/ There are very neat touches that I really loved. However once you step inside the 7 you do feels the difference in luxury. IMO materials are better in the 7. Some interior aspects are better executed in the 5 while others are better in the 7. For instance, the HVAC touch screen is two steps up in the 7 compared to the actual buttons in the 5. The seat memory buttons are better executed in the 7. The area around the gear selector is more to my taste in the 5.
I understand that you cannot have the level of luxury the 7 has in the new 5. However it is very close.
7. I drive: Screen is AMAZING!! large and GREAT quality. Job well done BMW. The new interface is really nice. a significant step up. I love the tiles with the preview.
8. Interior space - In the front it is more than enough. In the back - sufficient. Head and shoulder room were more than enough. Knee room was little tight when sitting in the rear while the driver seat is set to my position (But hey, I'm 190cm tall ;) )
9. Head up display - amazing!! Huge and colorful. A big step up compared to other BMWs. Night and day compared to other brands.
10. Driving: Lets start with the not so good: The steering is too light. Design of the steering and how it feels in the hand is superb - both the regular and the m-sport. However, the steering is quite light and less connected than what I would want. I own an E39 and an E60 - both have great steering weight and feel. The G30 is just barely better than my father's f07 GT. That is how bad I thought it is. It is very direct and precise, however the magic of the E39 and even the E60 is gone. I think I wasn't realistic with hopes of it being better than the F10.
The good: Drives magnificently. You just do not feels the road imperfections. The level of comfort is way higher than previous BMWs. Great job BMW!!
11. Engines- the 530i is VERY strong. More than enough for anybody actually. Feels much stronger and livelier than our E60 inline 6. NO turbo lag whatsoever. Gear changes are unnoticeable - which is the best compliment you can give. Sounded good too.
Then we stepped into the 540i m sport - and immediately you notice the difference. It is WAY more powerful and much more fun to drive. The engine is very smooth. Even better than our n55 F07. The exhaust sounds MUCH better and even had some pops if i'm not mistaken.

Final thoughts - HUGE improvement and a great leap forward compared to the F10. This is finally, a BEAUTIFUL 5 series, inside and out, with a good heart (engine) and soul and manners (drives), lacking only in the steering weight and feel.

But hey, nobody is perfect....

Wait, the E39 is.... ;) and this one is ALMOST as good. I Don't think praise comes any higher than that ;)

Nice one. I went and had a look at the G30 on Saturday and will test drive it this coming weekend. :)

Regarding the steering. Did you try putting the engine and gear gearbox into sport to make the car steering wheel weightier and the car more responsive?

Drove both cars in comfort and sport - can't say I felt a huge difference.
Even in sport mode - the steering is too light.

@m-power: Thanks a lot for your impressions and pics. :)

What is your impression regarding to the headlights? My impression was they seems much slimmer in person than on pics.

I'm sorry, but that 3.0 V6 has nothing on that V8 beast in the 5er

They should have tested it against the 540i
