3 Series (G20) [Official] BMW 3 Series (G20)

The BMW G20 is the seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series range. Body styles: G20 (sedan), G21 (wagon/touring), G28 BEV (i3), and G28 (long-wheelbase). Predecessor: F30 3 Series. Successor: G50 3 Series. Production: October 2018-2016.
With OPF you’ve got to be happy with any sound that comes out of the pipes and long as it’s a sound. We are soon approaching times when there won’t be any sound.

If it's a US car, don't think there is an OPF

3 vs 5

They are brothers and not twins.

One thing the picture highlights is that the 5er isn’t as dated as many make it out to be in this forum compared to the rest of the BMW family.

It really is though compared to the new models. The grille, flat rear lights and oldish interior speak for themselves. The 3er looks a gen ahead now.

Also guys, in this pic you can clearly see how flat the hood of the 3er is compared to the 5er, when looking at the height of the (for us) vertical hood shutline: the 3er is far better resolved, with a lot less visual bulk on top of the shutline.
On the 3er, the side fender wraps neatly into the hood shutline, where there is some trickery going on on the 5er to make it look as good as possible with the package they had to work with. The result is simply cleaner and better on the 3er.

Off topic, but with the 5er facelift I think they are going to slightly raise the whole front of the car in much the same way they did with the 7er. That way they can put on a new, fatter grille and make the whole headlight to grille ratio better and more modern.

And if they are not going to do that, they should have ;)

I thought the big fat grile (BFG) is reserved for the "THE" (not gonna lie, but that's just silly) upper-crust models?

The big, big ones are, sure. But compare the hood shutline of the F30 to the place where the grille starts on the G20 and you realize they simply raised the grille to erase the shutline. It’s genius, because the grille is made of pedestrian friendly soft materials and obviouly complies with regulations regarding the subject (which has everything to do with said shutlines).
So in other words, yes, the G20 too has a big nose compared to what came before.

And the 5er grille looks a bit flimsy now next to all the new bling bling. A completely new and bigger grille wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

I could see 5er LCI get the same Grille shape as the new 3er and 1er which look similar in outline but difference in height and width.
Sooner or later they will have to connect those kidney grilles. Same goes for the X3.

G20 Missing Feature on A/C Memory Button

Memory buttons can be applied to Synchronize A/C between driver and passenger side. It would be nice if BMW can update software support on A/C memory button as G20 does not support separate A/C button to turn on/off on a fly. One would need to go into Menu A/C button, flip through the soft menu then select from the A/C checkbox, or say "Hello BMW" to turn on/off A/C!

Thank you very much. I didn't even notice this in my viewing of the G20. I use the single-function A/C on/off a lot - especially in our winters when the temperature can swing dramatically between early morning and mid-afternoon.

Amazing. What a stunner. On Alpine White, the black (all black even) grille looks sweet together with all the other black accents.

Weird oversight. And annoying, so I hope they'll fix this soon.

Hey Guys,

I'm a first time potential BMW buyer. The 340i M Sport looks like a fine machine. I put together a build and want your opinions. I have a couple of questions too...

1. Is the car estimator on the BMW site accurate?

From a test in Auto Zeitung between Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.2D and BMW 320d Msport.
The Alfa didn’t do that bad it’s actually really fast in comparison the BMW overall is the better car and I’m glad to see that it’s actually more dynamic. BMW back!

G20 Moon Roof Analysis

G20 moon roof is approximately 100mm (3.94") longer than the previous gen, with full moon roof opening (length) at 23". When moon roof is in full open position, it leaves around 8.5" glass extended from rear moon roof edge. For those who preferred moon roof option, this limitation maybe something to keep in mind.

RealOEM parts suggested the limitation could be a combination of the followings:

- Sliding roof frame rail supported up to certain length due to curvature of the roof without further reducing the headroom of rear passenger.
- Wire hardness beneath shark fin external antenna may prevent moon roof from sliding all the way.
- Wire hardness from rear window brake light may prevent moon roof from sliding all the way.

The green dash line in the photo below depicted the previous gen moon roof rear edge, with approximate 19" moon roof length. There is about 18.5" space from moon roof rear edge to the beginning of shark fin antenna, and approximate 28.5" to the shortest end of rear window glass. Using previous gen 19" moon roof as reference point, the moon roof may slide all the way (during reset/initialization) before it reaches the beginning of shark fin or end of sliding roof frame rail. When applying the same limitation at around shark fin antenna, G20 moon roof might be able to slide in a few more inches (3.5"), though still extended several inches (5") outside of rear moon roof edge. This may require re-programming of full opening position without the above mentioned limitations by BMW.

LOL.

This is why I never order a car that I haven’t test driven several times. It’s always the small touches or omissions that can make or break your car ownership.

While the new centre console layout is welcomed, I maintain that the HVAC controls in the G30 and G12 are the most user friendly of ANY car on the market.

It’s easy to train your muscle memory about where the buttons are and there are knobs for controlling temperature.

I use the sync buttons anytime I need to quickly heat or cool and it one of my top 3 most frequently used buttons after ignition.
