I think we can't compare what RR do and take brutal money for with this..this is marketed and shown in press material as..look wuhhuuu you can have color coded keys and blue interiors..
What RR/MM and those do is very diffrent..its like sure we will make whatever you want, its hand made takes time..and costs about as much as the car itself..

So please compare apples with apples..

Once they where in a position to tell the customers what they need, and now they are not.. something must have gone terribly wrong.

As a final thought on this i say.. Leave the gimmicks to the lesser cars!!!

Fact of the matter is, if you REALLY want to throw all caution to the wind, and please your customers, by giving them what they TELL YOU they want (then why do the CEO's, Designers, Engineers, etc. get paid so much for? Why not just let the people Design the car?), then girls will say they want pink stripes running along the 3-Series, Americans will say they want the whole Center console to be a giant Cupholder, old men will say that they want a cane-holder, and people with children will say that they want a glass separation from the rear to the front (like Limo's). :D

What separates the great ones from the basic ones is doing what you want, and upholding a uniformed code to your product, something that instantly and confidently identifies it, and making it so damn good that YOU set the trend, and not follow it.

BMW Individual - you can get a specific color of your choice if your a willing to pay for it. Or a special leather, or special wood trim etc. Individual needs, individual wishes - individual features. But in this case the Lines are preselected - using colors, trims, materials people associate with certain occasion. Also following trends.

Also ... why this in 1er & 3er. The answer is simple: to attract MINI buyers to BMW. To keep MINI customer in house. MINI is funky ... but when needing a bigger or more mature car ... BMW is here for you. But BMW is still to formal ... I want something a bit more funky still. I'm not an Opa. So ... here you go: BMW Lines. Customization in MINI style: but on more premium level.

That's only one aspect. The other is to keep & attract as many customers as possible: more customization & differentiation you offer, greater are the chances you attract bigger pool. Some love sporty touch in design - without chrome, some love more chrome, some love matt titanium look ... So, you give people choices. And they can pick something they really like. Isn't that great?

It works for MB, and will work for BMW too. I haven't heard anything over MB Lines - what a stupid idea they are. Sorry, but some Opas want Classic line, while some younger bloke prefers Avantgarde, and a fine lady opts for Elegance. What's the big deal here? The formula works. And it's obviously cheap enough to realize, and it boosts profits since some lines have higher price.

Mind that many people are upgrading from economy class cars to premium ones - and find it weird that some premium brands don't offer lines, while they were available to them in the "lesser" cars. More choice, the better. What's the biggie? ;)

About how long for the convertible?

First of all I'm a Sedan guy, I don't care much for Coupé's. Nevertheless, I somehow suspect that they will have their hands full with the F32/F33. The profie that has been layout infront of us, is precedent for a 4-door Sedan. If the same platform is used for a 2-door Coupé, I'm sorry I don't see anything evolutionary happening there...

You don't see a 5 series Coupé although it could make some profit for BMW AG...

Hold on enlighten me please.

Does the interior trim colors and the color coded keys come as a part of the 3 different lines? (ex..sport comes with black key..elegance comes with beige??)

Or are they separate options?

I have nothing against the lines.. its actually something i missed at BMW... :)

yes

Sport has red & gloss black accents, M has blue & gloss black accents, Modern has oyster brown & alu matt accents, Luxury has shiny chrome accents.

Oh..so it runs through the interior..and the key..its like a theme..

So can you get Sport without the Red? or is it forced on you?

( this is kind of starting to make sense now)

I think the "Lines" are a good thing too. More versatility and makes for more differentiation on the roads, something especially a massively populated car like the 3-Series needs, to stay interesting (goes for any popular car).

Also, judging by the interior and some of the designations, and gimmicks (Keys, for example), it seems like BMW may be pushing the 3'er more toward the youth crows than it already is? Would make sense as they are widening their model portfolio so much, maybe they have the ability to move the 3 more "downmarket" in terms of age demographic? Then again, that comes from affordability (and size), and I'm sure this 3 won't be any cheaper than the last one.

Red clip on key is standard. So is red stitching on steering wheel, and the red accents in dials. Red trim lining is a free option - or you can get glossy black acrylglass lining instead. Eg. M pack has blue accentsž So, yes, every Line has a special (color / material) theme.

@K-A

Yes - especially targeting wealthy young Asian professionals who are more prone to funky customization.

^
So if i get sport, and i do not want a red key,or red stitching on steering wheel..
I should look to some other line.. ??

If so .. then there goes the freedom of the customer straight down the drain:D

No. Then you should get a black permanent marker, and paint black all the red accents that annoy you. ;)

^Haha -- Magic Marker solves it all:)

And just to take this discussion full circle..

This then is NOT what RR does;) and thus incomparable..:)

PS
Nice car btw:D

Never said that. I've just made I point how far can (bespoke) customization go. BMW has Individual for that. Yet still limited compared to RR where most work is done by hand, and so the customization is possible on extremely high level. While those BMW Lines are preselected themes - like eg. "special editions". ;) BMW does special editions on MINI & BMW, while RR gets limited editions. Now special editions have also standard alter ego - in BMW Lines. :)

Funny Artist, for M5 you were complaining about how BMW is not offering any options for the brake caliper color, now you are complaining they are offering options and some how that tantamounts to "whoring". Oh well...

On to better things, M kit is smoking hot.

btw, is the button above the start button for turning off traction control?

There is some B M W moron that practice censorship in this site. He cant stand but his own opinion here. I said , " the 3er is going to sell well among the girls and orientals." Does that bother you ?. If so , just take a trip to California and you will see the fact. Happy now ?.
