Something that is bothering me very much is the idea behind allowing this car to be a gimmick..???
Why?
With the color coded keys, and the blue and red lines running through the interior?
Is this a desperate way of being funky and fresh?

Its very Smart, fiat 500 to me.. does not suit a premium German car..

PS
and i know its an option, but still..just the fact that they offer it.. abit.. i don't know.. unworthy..bordering on pathetic!!!

Price wise my 5er is a bargain compared to the F30.
But humm, with the exact same engine the F30 does 0-100kph. in just 7.5 seconds compared to the 8.1 with the F10.
But 5.9sec with the 328i sounds more appealing for only 2k euro more than 320d and still has a good efficiency :)

Do you really think such offers are done without any deep marketing research? Obviously there are enough customers out there with such demands for customization / exclusivity. If not wanting exclusive line, you can still get a bare car with line specific design elements, and pack it with all possible optional features. These Lines are just an optional addition. People like customization. And why not give it to them? Good marketing is all about giving people what they want - since that sells the products. Think Rolls- Royce & their Bespoke program - they can even print Mickey Mouse in your pink leather on your seats if you want that. Or get the car in color of the lavender that grows in your garden. Or make a wood trim from the tree from your backyard. Make the wishes come true - that's the best what great marketing & business can do: make the customers happy.

I don't understand the people who are not interested in specific customization option but still bitch about them & calling them stupid & redundant etc. Same applies to certain products in the offer. Who are you to judge? It's like bitching & whining why your supermarket & dairy company sells strawberry yogurt when you only like & eat cherry flavored one. Geez, half a million people buy a 3er in a year. Do you really think all think alike & all have same need & desire - identical to yours?

Many of you still think marketing is all about selling the products that engineers make. Wrong! It's more about finding out what exactly customers want, and delivering such a product if possible. That's the essence of (good) marketing. What you talk about is pure sales.

in this pricelist it says that f30 320d in germany starts from 35.350€ brutto (29.705€ netto) and here are two shorten links http://liten.be//zW7Ie http://liten.be//Im1xI where we can see f20 120d's cost between 43-48.000€ in germany, so i wonder how much will f30 cost with same packages that those f20's have, can you please enlighten me

Well, at that price, the F30 sits itself rather high compared to the A4 (€33.7k). The C7 A6 with a similar engine is only €3k (€38.5k) more, while the 520d is another €2k (€40.4k).

This will be down to the level of the standard equipment.

Puts the bulb lights into perspective, the car would price itself out of the market with all bells and wistles added directly. F30 development probably costed a lot of money, and with the weight savings added the car has become expensive to produce. I think production costs have to go down before they will add anything like LED blinkers. LCI seems about right for that...

All of what you said is right.. and i buy it.. options for the customers to even make the car shit brown inside out is a freedom..and a great thing.
But i mean really? you think the market research told them that people NEED different colored keys?

There are 2 ways to look at this:
1. Customer knows what he wants and shall receive it.
2. We make what WE think is great and within our company's standards, and it will be so damn appealing that people will want it. ( cause after all WE are the experts;))

None of the above are wrong, but i feel that going down the mini, smart, fiat path with these gimmicky options is in a way whoring out the brand.

Sure it sells but.. well but nothing:D..haha it sells.. and enthusiasts like us bitch.. but we mean jack shit to bmw or any other manufacturer.. its about the money:D

its just sad..and not needed imo for a nice premium car like the 3er:)

Back in the day, M-B and BMW were the ones who told customers what they want. ;)

Now, they flop around, chasing customers by doing uncharacteristic things, for better or worse.

Steve Jobs once said that he puts NO effort into Marketing Research, because "It's not the customers job to know what they want". Absolutely brilliant. Can you imagine if M-B and BMW had such confident innovative leadership? It would be ballsy (could blow up in their faces), or it would allow them to not have to do certain awkward things to "keep up".

@ The Artist

Then Rolls-Royce is the ultimate whoring brand ... with all the crazy customization they do under the Bespoke program.

Geez, some buyers want Emily made of crystal with blue LED inside ... AND THEY GET IT. And yes ... they can even engrave the face of your wife, son or even of your dog on your car's key. Not to mention tacky special editions of RR cars that cater to specific customer base.

Perhaps in the past MB & BMW were in position to do what you are saying. Today they are not. Today customers are much more diverse & more demanding when it comes to customization etc. If not getting what they demand, they switch to different brand. It's not like in the past when brand loyalty was much greater.

And if such customization via Lines works for MB - a more premium brand than BMW - it will work for BMW as well. Be sure.

Steve Jobs & Apple ... c'mon ... it's different to develop a car .... much more complex product than any consumer electronics (for kids).

I like the new 3er and I love it because of the M-pack and Sport line. But what makes me adore it are the things you are talking about, Artist.
I'm the biggest fan of the 3er and all the options added are like coming from my night dreams :)
It's a WIN for BMW. I have owned 2 x 3 series till now and I'm planing to own a lot more :)
As an ex car dealer I can say that's going to be an easy sell for any dealer - A self selling product :t-cheers:

When you K-A say the side looks old, we have to think for a moment. BMW continue to design their side profiles with a single line (this F30 has teo, but quite subtle) and upwards or orizontal. MB is trying to innovate, but they draw akward lines, one upwards and the other downwards... What do you want?.

It's not about the lines, they're just one aspect of the design, and the lines on the F30 are more than fine. I'm talking about shapes and proportions. If the F30 had a front end that looks fit to the rest of the car, I'd simply say it looks classic, timeless, etc. However, such a futuristic, super bendy and pinched front, frankly *forces* the sides to look dated, old, and stodgily disproportioned. It's like they took an E90 or E46 from 90's roots, refined just a little bit, but then threw on the front end from the futuristic I8. Why it's so shocking to me is that I've never seen BMW mis-shape a car like that.

The F10's front is far less dynamic, much more graceful, blunt, and flat, however it looks like it was designed around the same car, from the same time-period. I feel like the F30's front was forced by the Marketing Team. I.e, BMW Designers had a theme in mind, and they built it: Cautiously evolved 3-Series, all around, with heavy influences (or copies) from the rest of the current BMW Sedan family, but the Marketing Team said "It looks too similar, we need something shocking and funky to attract some smoke-and-mirrors effect, to arrest people, to push them into wanting to switch from the old car", and forced them to throw on a disproportionate front end. I said the exact same thing about the Audi A6 BTW.

Naw, K-A you gotta prepare yourself for the 2013 S-Class. What goes around comes around. ;)

Lol. Hey, if the W222 is as superfluous as I have an unfortunate feeling it might be, I'm sure you'll see some equally harsh and critical posts by me. :D

^ Lol I'd so want to order my own RR and order all kinds of crazy sh*t to it, like to have a water fountain integrated to the dash or a statue of a hippo instead of Emily. I wonder where the line goes.. Anyhow, back to the subject, I freakin love this car, M Pack is pure perfectness. I can't wait for the Coupé which possibly will be my first car :D

First comment I have made on the F30: I like it, it is fresh. It makes my E90 with about 20 kEUR accessories look bland. However, there are some things I don't like. The front and the head lights to start with but I'm sure there is something that can be done about it, either with BMW Performance or after sale accessories. Now I just have to wait 6+ months to see the variants that are appealing to me (330/335d xDrive and the ActiveHybrid 3).
