Yep. In US I have heard few people put GM engine with 500+ HP in their BMW. Some are tuned to 700+ HP.

I will say this, while GM engines might not be as high-tech as europeans or japanese, they sure as hell give a good bang for the buck since they are easy as hell to tune like crazy. Not to mention they are FAR easier to work on than europeans. Thus, if a team isn't backed by millions and millions of dollars, it's better to have a good engine that engineers don't have to spend to much time on, which saves money.
