It’s an important day in Bentley’s history as the company has finished assembly of the very first production-spec Bentayga.

Developed over the course of four years, the Bentayga is Bentley’s first ever SUV and getting here required creating more than 1,500 jobs as part of a £840-million investment. It’s described as being a “sector-defining SUV” and will start reaching its rightful owners from January. In the following period, Bentley will be busy making the “First Edition” of which only 608 units will be assembled and one of the cars is heading to Buckingham Palace.

Joining Bentley’s Heritage Collection, the first unit produced at the Crewe factory has an Anthracite paint and was handcrafted over the course of 130 hours. During this period, the ultra-luxurious SUV passed through the new body and paint shops as well as through the new assembly line.

Both the limited-run model and the standard Bentayga are powered by a newly developed W12 6.0-liter twin-turbo engine with 608 PS (447 kW) and 900 Nm (663 lb-ft) of torque. It will be joined by a 4.0-liter V8 TDI with e-turbo and there's also a plug-in hybrid version confirmed for 2017.

There are some rumors it could spawn a high-performance “coupe” version as early as next year with a sleeker design and more power, but we’ll have to wait for confirmation from Crewe.

You guys probably just came here for the photos, but we can't have you leaving empty-handed... or empty-headed, depending how you look at it. The Bentley Bentayga Coupe makes about as much sense as covering a watch in gold and diamonds, which is precisely why it will probably be built. But that will happen later rather than sooner.

Recent reports from British automotive media suggest the Bentayga Coupe has been approved for production, together with a new sportscar and a hardtop version of Santa's sled. Who are we kidding here? Bentley is a small company that relies on backing from Volkswagen Group. We seriously doubt the new chairman or the investors will agree to spend hundreds of millions just so soccer players can have their Bentayga and Continental GT all mixed into one.

But just look at these two renderings by RM Design! The Bentayga is the type of SUV that grows on you. After years of loathing the idea of a Bentley 4x4, we now like the uber-rich Breitling on wheels appearance.

Thanks to styling elements borrowed from Bentley's other models, this Sports Activity Coupe looks twice as appealing as the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe.

The Bentayga's one and only engine is a new 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 that develops 605 horsepower. It's matched to one of those 8-speed automatics from ZF. No, it's not as sharp or intuitive as the Porsche PDK, but it does the job.

Bentley will likely fix the lack of excitement with a special edition performance model. Because, in this day and age, it is perfectly okay to lower an SUV and install a carbon fiber chin spoiler that scrapes the curb, we might even see a 700 horsepower version of the Bentayga. But does that really matter when the British bruiser weighs as much as 2.5 Miatas?

Once that happens, you'll see Arab billionaires throwing their checkbooks at Wolfgang Dürheimer to build them this sexy X6 fighter.

Apparently in the German media the concept is expected in Geneva in March. Visually though, I don't think it would improve the car one iota.

So, what do we think - is this the ultimate "I'm-21-and-just-signed-my-second-contract-with-Manchester City"-car or does it actually bring anything to the table?

The former is guaranteed. Rappers and footballers have been salivating for years waiting to get their hands on the new "Bentley Truck" and throw '30 rims & gaudy wraps on them.

I recently went to a private viewing - the Bentayga's exterior is really as bad in person as it is in the pictures.

The interior is nice, but the winged consoled layout dates back to 2003, so its all too familiar at this point. I'd call it a contemporary Mulsanne interior. Seats are great and interior quality is the best of any SUV, but theres not much interior room; think Porsche Cayenne. It also lacks the commanding forward visibility of the Range Rover being that its technically a large crossover. I'm sure it drives amazing, but not my cup of tea.

The Bentagya may be sold out for x amount of years, but a large percent of the orders are dealer orders for inventory. There's also a rather annoying dealer email campaign to poach full size Range Rover owners with various viewing parties.

I love the interior, certainly the best of all SUV's but the styling just doesn't do it for me. The front with those round larger outer lights don't suit the tall body, the grill shape and size reminds me of the 1980's Mercedes models (except it has mesh) and those bulging (E-class style) rear wheel arches also don't look elegant in a tall vehicle like this. The profile and rear end look a little anonymous. It is missing alot of elegant styling details from the saloons.

Yeah, I know what you're saying ....and everything about it is telling me I shouldn't like it so much either.

However, it is bold and distinctive ...as it needs to be. I no longer think it's ugly ...but it certainly isn't as pretty as a Range Rover.

It's the King of bling hill. The nouveau riche will love it as it's will distinguish them from the HENRYs(High-earner-not-yet-rich) driving about in their black Range Rovers.

The car doesn't get my blessing because it's as much of an afterthought as the Cayenne mkII. However the next generation Bentayga will look better as Bentley will have more time to design a front facia that suits the shape of the car, but is uniform with the rest of the range.

Ha ha, you're right Hassan, this thing will be very popular with people who like to display their wealth ...but it's difficult to think of many high-end SUVs that aren't bought by those types of people these days.

Even something more utilitarian is often bought more for appearances than for practical reasons: My next door neighbour has a large dark green Land Rover Defender, it looks really cool but I have never seen any dirt on it (I doubt it has ever been out of the city) lol.

It actually brings something. A SUV is the sedan of the 21st century. Brands like Bentley and Rolls are smart to invest in them if they want to stay relevant.

Still looks hideous on the outside and the interior presentation is brought down by the dated switch gears.

Yes it will be the toast of the Noveau Riche but it will make money.
But to see what they originally dismissed in the competition is tragic. There were more distinctive ideas there but they went for the family look.
Its up there with Gold Toilets, swavorski crystal bathrooms and other unnecessary things needed to fulfil their lives.
You don't need it but you want it.

In the course of customer evaluations for the Cullinan. Although they own Range Rovers and Cayennes as secondary vehicles. They are not necessary the standard but rather outsourced to companies like Mansory,Gemballa and Overfinch so they see more exclusivity. Although Mansory will unfortunately get their hands on the Cullinan.

Gees what happened to K!!er?

Confession: I really like it in red. I've changed my mind on it, I would choose this Bentayga before a Range Rover or Mercedes. The reviews have been outstanding so far.

The front just still looks messy to me. I'm still having a hard time with this one. I wish it was more of a clean look like the Mulsanne. Hopefully seeing it in person will help. I still wouldn't pick this over the Range Rover IMO (As far as the exterior. Interior on the other hand is flawless).

The switch gear as well as the interior itself in the Bentayga is ment to convay a level of old world (old-school) charm and elegance. It`s the same with the Mulsanne. These cars are not ment to be as trendy as our beloved Germans. I wish I could say the same for the body design. It is a clash of the trendy modern, mixed with some old-world themes. It would look like a mess parked next to the Mulsanne.
