Q7 [Official] Audi Q7

VAGs' conundrum(s) with regard to the Q7 series II:

a.) leaving space for a far more stylishly flamboyant Q8 ?
b.) not wanting to be intrusive on the upcoming Porsche Cayenne III ?
c.) not wanting to be intrusive on the upcoming Bentley Bentayaga ?

I continue to quite like the interior. And I also do not see an exaggerated visual similarity to the current A6 Avant. But the exterior is admittedly pretty vanilla.

I would tend to agree that in the purpose of progress in the luxury SUV segment there could be a more appropriate Q9 still intended just as the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS will move to reflect the larger luxury models.
Adventurous design for such a model could be on the cards not only for Audi but also Mercedes-Benz. I would not be surprised if the Mercedes GLS is reminiscent of its high end G-Force concept which expanded the G-Klasse language to more modern and luxury standards required today rather than another extended ML or GLE-Klasse.
Premium manufacturers are now looking for the step above , there is now a position that customers want the brand but they want the penultimate model , higher luxury and more exclusivity.

In the case of the Q7 its look conforms to industry rumours have been confirmed that there was turmoil in the design department and more than just a clash, the A4 was also a victim in its high profile design regime change.
Apparently there was more adventurous options ahead of the final choice.

The Q8 was confirmed during the Audi press conference. So that might be the reason.

Exactly that. Wolfgang Egger started a reorganisation which led to quite some tension within the design department. As a result Achim Badstübner, an important designer who had worked for Audi for 13 years suddenly resigned and moved to Mercedes. Also Wolfgang Dürheimer, head of R&D, got fired from his position due to dissatisfaction from the management concerning the design of the Q7. He gave green light to a more bold and aggressive looking Q7, which of course was sent back to the drawing board soon after Dürheimer's dismissal.
Rumors say the arrival of Marc Lichte also caused friction between the designers. Lichte brought along 2 of his sidekicks from VW, who can't get along very well with the gentlemen at Audi Design. And yes, unfortunately the new A4 is also a victim of this chaos.

A comparison of the old & new Q7 is just heartbreaking. The old Q7 looks so much more robust and impressive, and is unmistakably an SUV.

The old car looks so much better than the new car, less fussy front and definitely more butch

Absolutely. It was funny to hear from Audi at the NAIAS that they consider the Q7 to be 'an onroader with great offroad capabilities'. This pretty much reveals Audi's vision on modern SUVs and confirms the complaints about the appereance of the Q7: A crossover instead of a real SUV, with just enough ground clearance options in case people ever take a road other than the autobahn :D

Let's be realistic. Who takes these cars off road ? The wheels are too big, not enough rubber. Audi is only being honest. No one drives these cars off road.

I agree, you're right about that. But if I were to buy an SUV (by looks), I'd probably skip the Audi dealer. Unless you really need the 3rd seat row there's now no point anymore in buying a Q7 instead of an A6 allroad.

Yesterday, I spent 30 minutes inside the Q7. It is an amazing car - industry leading. The sound system is the best one I have ever heard. It is a rolling movie theater. The new MMI is equally as impressive. Responsiveness, feel, haptic feedback, intuitiveness, everything is so well made and thought of. I came away impressed. Good job Audi.

Unless you want to site higher, then the Allroad isn't for you. If you really want to get down to nuts and bolts why buy an Allroad when a Avant quattro will do 95% of what an Allroad can at reduced price.

Wow those people are very talented, so nice to see something like this, unusual snow sculpturing.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
