That said, the GrandSphere was a bright light in an otherwise dim outlook on what future design could look like.

Dim? In what way? Because BEV paves the way to total design freedom, unbound from ICE constrains and contraptions. It's going to be better than ever before.

That's par for the course for most that go from initially presenting a concept and then churning out something for production. While I like to believe that at least 80% will be preserved for the eventual production-ready car, I think it's still a bit optimistic.

Even a 1% difference makes or breaks a design, let alone a whopping 20%.
20% pretty much means a completely different car.

Recent BEVs or BEV concepts had an almost appliance-like look. And that very well may be the future: something that is just mode of conveyance largely devoid of being design-driven. There's a sense of occasion with this Audi concept and a lot has to do with this concept's size, proportions, and design elements.

Possibly. Better? Maybe. Different? Definitely. I agree design will definitely open more possibilities when not constrained by ICEV conventions. If the skateboard chassis is the optimal BEV chassis and there's not significant progress in terms of downsizing batteries while maintaining capacity, than that'll be the major bottleneck regarding design in the near future.

No argument from me regarding that. Frankly, as mentioned before, I think preserving even 80% of the concept's design would be considered optimistic. Then again, when it comes to design, how would one discern whether 60% of a design is preserved when transitioning for production versus 80%? It's all a bit of marketing chatter.

A mere 10mm of additional roof height at rear passenger head-level meant the difference of perceived "sweep" to "squat" on the series I Audi A7 versus its' 2009 Sportback Concept prelude.

With current events leaving most things very "up in the air" and levels of uncertainty reaching new all-time highs, I have no idea at all as to whether something even remotely similar to the Grand Sphere will ever come to fruition.:

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
