I made a quick stop at my local Audi dealership to have a look at the A4, specifically the Avant out of interest, I have no plans to replace my car.
Here are my impressions.
Exterior:
Styling wise it is a nice mix of sharp lines and taut surfaces, the FWD proportions are well disguised too. Having said that the car really needs the S line trim and the 19 inch rims to raise the level of interest.
As always the really interesting part are the details, the overall fit and finish are fantastic, panel fit are as good as it gets, and that single polished aluminium trim around the D pillar is a small but very refined touch. However there is one let down, the inner side of the door handle isn't painted and the action isn't very smooth.
Interior:
Initial impression is that it is an interior with high perceived quality, and near flawlessly assembled, however it isn't perfect as I will mention later on.
Inside, the styling follows the exterior design theme, angular shapes, straight lines and clean sharp surfaces. It feels very "technical" but not very luxurious or sporty, for example. the design of the door panel is a bit empty and featureless to my liking.
All the major buttons and controls have a very solid and precise action, the air con unit has as nice damped feel to. The only ergonomic issue I have is the location of the engine start button, it is hidden in that odd space between the dashboard and the transmission tunnel. The metal trim are all nicely finished and cold to touch. Despite all this, there are still far too many use of black plastics. The black plastic trim on top of the transmission tunnel has these sharp longitudinal groves on them, maybe it is Audi's attempt to imitate wood grain, but it looks and feels like plastic trim with deep scratches on it. The real surprise was the trim on the side of the transmission tunnel is made from cheap brittle hard plastic.
Interior comfort is alright, nothing to complain about, rear shoulder room and leg room feels a little tighter than the C-class.
Audi MMI:
Without a doubt it is the smoothest, most responsive, quickest and most user friendly system I have used. It is finally at the same level as smart phones and tablets in terms of its usability and functionality. The short cut buttons are all placed next to the main rotary control, and thankfully unlike Mercedes, the touch pad is in-corporated on the top of the rotary nob and not on a separate pad. Any inputs are registered almost instantly and it accurately records and understands your gesture too. There is also a row of 8 touch sensitive short cut keys just in front of the MMI controller. They are completely customizable. I think it is a great way to allow the driver to quickly access whatever they want from the car.
The graphics and the layout of the various sub menus are clear and easy to see, especially on the high res top mount display. It really makes the command unit on my W205 feel last generation.
Rear Cargo Space:
Probably the most important thing for me. It doesn't look like I can fit my luggage because the D pillar is angled quite steeply. Also even though there are latches at the rear to unlock the rear seats, you still need to flip down the seats yourself, and it doesn't fold down flat.
Overall:
It is a nice premium car, in typical Audi fashion, but it leaves me a bit cold. I can understand why some people will like it and prefer it over the C class or the 3 series.
