Audi Unveils New "Ultra" Quattro All-Wheel Drive

Audi has been at the forefront of all-wheel drive on passenger cars, starting with its rally racers, and now it has readied yet another evolution.

The German company has just unveiled its new quattro system with "Ultra technology" that aims to improve fuel efficiency of all-wheel drive models thanks to a trick new setup.

Typically, AWD cars use more fuel than front- and rear-wheel drive ones because of increased friction (and, in most cases, weight). Audi's new Ultra tech, though, makes the system operate in front-wheel drive mode under normal condition and sends power to the rear wheels only when necessary.

Not exactly a revolution, since AWD-on-demand has been used for quite some time. Still, Audi's uses a number of new sensors that monitor things like steering input, grip and throttle pedal position, a processor located in the gearbox determines when the front wheels are about to lose traction and then funnels some power to the rear. By working in collaboration with the firm's stability control system, sensors can also determine if the car is being driven hard and then engage the rear wheels if required

The system itself is also unique from the previous normal quattro setup as it incorporates a clutch between the gearbox and propshaft as well as one on the rear axle to allow for the seamless shift in power.

All told, the new all-wheel drive system is said to save about 0.3l/100 km and will debut on the new A4 Allroad in the coming months.

I would have liked it better if the power was sent to the rear wheels under normal conditions...

I saw a base model, glacier white B9 parked outside Nandos the Saturday before last. It looked very underwhelming and didn't make me regret by F30 LCI purchase. The general public would be hard pressed identifying the car as an all new model I think. But I need to go to the dealership to have a closer inspection of some S-line cars.

The grille extension into the headlights is an interesting idea, but I am not sure whether I like it or not.

Audi A4 allroad quattro 3.0 TDI available on order in Europe

The 2016 Audi A4 allroad quattro is now available on order across Europe and carries a starting price in Germany of €44,750.

Audi’s all-new rugged wagon made its debut at the North American International Auto Show back in January in Detroit and can now be ordered in Europe. The cheapest version money can buy has the turbodiesel 2.0 TDI engine rated at 163 horsepower (120 kilowatts) and costs €44,750, but you can’t order it right away.

That’s because Audi mentions the 2.0 TDI along with the 2.0 TFSI will be available on the A4 allroad quattro starting this summer. Until then, early adopters will be stuck with the more expensive 3.0 TDI in 218 hp (160 kW) and 272 hp (200 kW) flavors. The former begins at €49,750 while the latter will set you back at least €54,400 in Germany

As standard, the 2016 Audi A4 allroad quattro in German specification comes with a seven-speed S tronic gearbox, xenon headlights, power tailgate, higher roof rails, and bespoke 17-inch aluminum wheels. It uses a newly developed quattro all-wheel-drive system benefitting from Audi’s ultra technology which improves fuel efficiency without sacrificing traction.

Compared to the regular A4 Avant, the allroad version has an additional 1.3 inches (34 millimeters) of ground clearance and features standard quattro which cuts fuel consumption by 0.3 liters / 100 compared to the previous system.

Deliveries of the Audi A4 allroad quattro 3.0 TDI will commence in the following months and will be followed by the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI versions.

2017 Audi A4 won't have a diesel engine in the U.S.

Audi of America President Scott Keogh has revealed the automaker has decided against offering a diesel engine in the 2017 A4.

Despite sounding like a response to the Dieselgate scandal, Keogh insists the move is unrelated. As he explained to Automotive News, the decision was made six months ago and is the result of declining interest in diesel-powered sedans. Keogh went on to say “The marketplace speaks, we listen to the marketplace, and the marketplace told us 'Go with SUVs.’”

Audi and Volkswagen are still trying to get the United States Environmental Protection Agency to sign-off on the sale of models equipped with diesel engines but Keogh said that process didn't have any effect on the decision. The executive went on to suggest additional diesel-powered variants could be dropped in the future but noted a decision is unlikely to occur before the next-generation of Audi models is introduced.

As we have previously reported, the Audi A4 is offered with an assortment of diesel engines in Europe. Choices include a 2.0-liter TDI with outputs of 150 horsepower and 190 hp as well as a 3.0-liter TDI that develops 218 hp and 272 hp.

Impressive car. Audis look bland as hell when they first arrive, but start to look better as real life pics and videos become the norm. This is going to be a big success for them here.

I poked my nose around a brand new B9 at the local tennis club. Exterior: very restrained but there's substantial presence and understated elegance. Interior is on another level - gorgeous fit and finish - and feels the most solid of any A4 interior. Plastics are a huge step up from the B8. The use and design of interior trim contributes to the air of solidity you can just see an enormous amount of attention to detail went into that interior design and consequently the cabin exudes the sense of premium. I'm a fan.

Disagree with you both. While I agree with your interior impressions...the exterior is an absolute snooze! Not sure why but Australian spec cars look like they're all sitting about an inch too high as well.

The only ones that will be desirable IMO are the S4 and RS4.

New Audi A4 L brings more comfort to Beijing

Audi is replacing its A4 L China-only model with a new generation of the long-wheelbase sedan.

Designed exclusively for Chinese customers, the new A4 L is 189 inches (4.81 meters) long with 114.5-inch (2.91 m) wheelbase, 1.6 inches (4.0 cm) more than the predecessor model. The current A4 is known for being significantly lighter than the vehicle it replaced and this variant makes no difference, as it weighs up to 242.5 pounds (110 kilograms) less than its predecessor.

Maybe you are already familiar with the design of the car, as it features no changes over the standard-wheelbase A4. That means Chinese customers will get a sporty sedan with aggressive front end, highlighted by optional Matrix LED headlights with dynamic turn signals.

But what really matters here is the interior, where we find a new “deluxe” automatic air conditioning system that can be controlled with just “a few buttons and dials.” The model also gets a head-up display which projects relevant information onto the windshield directly in the driver’s field of vision. The driver also won’t be missing the Audi virtual cockpit with its 12.3-inch screen that displays “highly detailed graphics” in “brilliant high resolution and with intricately rendered effects.”

Passengers can surf and email through a Wi-Fi hotspot using the LTE standard, while the Audi smartphone interface integrates cell phones into an environment developed especially for them. A 19-speaker 755-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system provides “a concert hall-type listening experience.”

Two TFSI engines will be offered for the model, both with a 2.0-liter displacement. Customers can choose from versions with 190 horsepower (140 kilowatts) and 252 hp (185 kW). Both they are mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox with two clutches that sends power to the front wheels or to all four wheels if the customer has opted for Quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

Audi says sales of the A4 L will kick off this summer with pricing to be revealed closer to the release date.
