Impressive car. Audis look bland as hell when they first arrive, but start to look better as real life pics and videos become the norm. This is going to be a big success for them here.

M
Totally agree, after seeing it IRL,I like it a lot.

I really like how the bonnet shut line works and hidden with the side character line. At least in pics it gives this no shut-line illusion.
I don't know about the Audi haters here, but at least i think Audi has kept to their theme, refining and modernising with each evolution. FWD proportions unfortunately, but with each generation it gets better. BMW made much more spectacular steps but follows their traditional and historical elements, however i think in terms of design refinement, this one is arguably more refined than the F30.
I don't mention Merc because they have been just trying random things over the past decade or two.

I made a quick stop at my local Audi dealership to have a look at the A4, specifically the Avant out of interest, I have no plans to replace my car.

Here are my impressions.

Exterior:

Styling wise it is a nice mix of sharp lines and taut surfaces, the FWD proportions are well disguised too. Having said that the car really needs the S line trim and the 19 inch rims to raise the level of interest.

As always the really interesting part are the details, the overall fit and finish are fantastic, panel fit are as good as it gets, and that single polished aluminium trim around the D pillar is a small but very refined touch. However there is one let down, the inner side of the door handle isn't painted and the action isn't very smooth.

Interior:

Initial impression is that it is an interior with high perceived quality, and near flawlessly assembled, however it isn't perfect as I will mention later on.

Inside, the styling follows the exterior design theme, angular shapes, straight lines and clean sharp surfaces. It feels very "technical" but not very luxurious or sporty, for example. the design of the door panel is a bit empty and featureless to my liking.

All the major buttons and controls have a very solid and precise action, the air con unit has as nice damped feel to. The only ergonomic issue I have is the location of the engine start button, it is hidden in that odd space between the dashboard and the transmission tunnel. The metal trim are all nicely finished and cold to touch. Despite all this, there are still far too many use of black plastics. The black plastic trim on top of the transmission tunnel has these sharp longitudinal groves on them, maybe it is Audi's attempt to imitate wood grain, but it looks and feels like plastic trim with deep scratches on it. The real surprise was the trim on the side of the transmission tunnel is made from cheap brittle hard plastic.

Interior comfort is alright, nothing to complain about, rear shoulder room and leg room feels a little tighter than the C-class.

Audi MMI:
Without a doubt it is the smoothest, most responsive, quickest and most user friendly system I have used. It is finally at the same level as smart phones and tablets in terms of its usability and functionality. The short cut buttons are all placed next to the main rotary control, and thankfully unlike Mercedes, the touch pad is in-corporated on the top of the rotary nob and not on a separate pad. Any inputs are registered almost instantly and it accurately records and understands your gesture too. There is also a row of 8 touch sensitive short cut keys just in front of the MMI controller. They are completely customizable. I think it is a great way to allow the driver to quickly access whatever they want from the car.

The graphics and the layout of the various sub menus are clear and easy to see, especially on the high res top mount display. It really makes the command unit on my W205 feel last generation.

Rear Cargo Space:
Probably the most important thing for me. It doesn't look like I can fit my luggage because the D pillar is angled quite steeply. Also even though there are latches at the rear to unlock the rear seats, you still need to flip down the seats yourself, and it doesn't fold down flat.

Overall:
It is a nice premium car, in typical Audi fashion, but it leaves me a bit cold. I can understand why some people will like it and prefer it over the C class or the 3 series.

Great review of the styling and interior @Monster, my thoughts and observations mirror yours with regards to the quality of the plastics on the center console of the A4 as well as the door panels. What disappointed me about the door panels is the speaker box plastic and lower door panel/storage are all in hard plastic and the plastic and textured wood on the center console had a hollow feel to it. I felt the C-class had better looking and better quality feeling door panels. I liked the A4 AC controls with the metalized knobs and digital temp readout and the feel of its MMI control. The Virtual Instruments had clear and great looking graphics and I felt it easy to control and change the different menus and instruments to display.

Don't worry 'Muricans. You won't be getting a base A4 like this, only those lucky, lucky Germans.

Btw, this one is for sale for 38.990,00 €. Is that expensive @Mick Briesgau ?

depends on which engine it has. But if it is the base engine, without equipment and used one, it's f#cking expensive.
However if you look closely, you can see that it has heated seats and automatic ac, so it's not completely bare bones. Regarding the slow sales of the A4 I would still say that this is very expensive...

It has the 1.4T 150 PS engine Fahrzeugdetails

I noticed that it's impossible to fit cable ties (zip ties) on the hubcaps. It's like Audi did this on purpose to make buyers choose the alloys.

I wouldn’t call it poverty spec as it still has a screen, LED day time running lights and powered rear windows.

Over the past week so have seen lots of A4 leases with the 1.4l Petrol. It might seem weak but it’s powering lots of decent sized VAG cars. It makes them cheap to buy and cheap to run.

Baseprice of the A4 Avant is € 33.700,- So the white one isn't completely bare. € 39.000 are circa DM 78.000,-. For that kind of money you could buy a Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse 300 SEL (W126).... back in 1991 ;)

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
