Yeah of course I missed the point

It's about how you drive the car, not where you drive the car. I really don't care about what point you're trying to make.

Of course you did, and in your response it is clear that you still don't get it, but it's ok. Don't waste yours or my time responding then if you don't care about what point I'm trying to make.

How you drive the car is obviously contingent about where you're driving the car. Marcus's post makes perfect sense.

Yes it is,just not as black and white as Merc is making it to be.
Besides none of the journalist are taking a pre production A4 and nearing it's limits. A cars dynamic abilities come to play much before nearing its 10/10th. How about steering accuracy and directness, feel, and how compliant the chassis is, does the car suffer from tremendous body roll, all these factors come in to play. I'm not missing the point either, I'm just polarizing it the way Merc seems to be.

Hmm... Missed this. I have to backpedal after these pics. It certanly is not as terrible as I thought. The front end looks better than in red.

Audi says "low beam resembles an eye"
Audi has released yet another promotional clip for the new A4 compact premium sedan , this time showing off the optional matrix LED headlights.

As standard, the A4 (B9) comes with Xenon Plus headlights but at an additional cost you can get LED or these matrix LED clusters which in low beam resemble an eye and have eleven light diodes requiring just 20 watts of power. As for the full beam, this is generated by twelve LEDs with three reflectors and work depending on the data provided by the camera mounted on the interior mirror. There's a control unit which switches them on and off individually as necessary and can automatically dim the diodes in one of the 64 stages available.

Audi says this method enables the matrix LED headlights to distribute light in several million possible combinations which all provide optimal lighting without disturbing traffic participants. The headlight's cornering function works with the optional MMI Navigation plus system and is activated even before the driver steers as the headlights "learn" from the sat-nav there's a corner up ahead.

Lastly, the matrix LED headlights come with dynamic turn signals which have several light diodes activated sequentially from inside and out in the direction of the turn.

Agreed. It is a little underwhelming for an all-new model, but that was always a given considering everything happening at Audi design. However, the changes leave it in a crisp evolutionary place. It avoided the disaster many expected.

The added tech looks great and that sport diff makes a HUGE difference dynamically; I have it in my S4. The interior needs to be sat in to truly compare materials. I like the current interior and (like most) I'm not an enormous fan of the fixed floating screen. The hood shutline/tornado line integration also needs to be seen in person to be judged.

Bottom line: I'm not looking to jump ship from the B8.5 S4 to a hypothetical B9 version anytime soon. But this will keep the A4 in a competitive place with its german rivals and a high volume seller.

Floating roof doesn't work at all. Essence of Avant lost, he should steer clear of "re"imagination and just stick to imagining.

Apparently you can order yours from today:

Efficient and packed with high tech: Orders now being taken for new Audi A4

  • German customers can order from August 13
  • Prices for the Audi A4 start at EUR 30,650
  • Debut for 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engine with innovative combustion process
Dealers are opening their order books for the new Audi A4. Customers can now place orders for both the Sedan and the Avant. The brand with the four rings offers cutting-edge drive technologies and a wide range of infotainment and driver assistance systems in both midsize models.

The new Audi A4 achieves absolutely top ratings for efficiency. It boasts the best-in-class drag coefficient of just 0.23 (Avant: 0.26) and has shed as much as 120 kilograms (264.6 lb) in weight compared with the predecessor model. The economical four-cylinder power units and the high-torque six-cylinder engines delivering up to 200 kW (272 hp) also play a major part in this efficiency gain.

The Audi A4 is available for the first time with the high-efficiency engine 2.0 TFSI ultra* developing 140 kW (190 hp). The gasoline engine uses an innovative combustion process and has been designed based on the rightsizing principle. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG, explains: “Rightsizing is about striking the perfect balance between vehicle category, displacement, output, torque and efficiency behavior in everyday conditions. Our new 2.0 TFSI is a paragon of Vorsprung durch Technik.” The economical power unit reduces the NEDC consumption of the new A4 Sedan to 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers (49.0 US mpg) and CO2 emissions to 109 grams per kilometer (175.4 g/mi) (Avant: 5.0 l (47.0 US mpg); 114 g CO2 (183.5 g/mi).

The new Audi A4 and Audi A4 Avant will be on our roads in the fall. They come equipped with an extensive selection of new technologies making their first appearance in this model, such as Matrix LED headlights, adaptive cruise control Stop&Go including traffic jam assist, Audi virtual cockpit and 3D Sound System from Bang & Olufsen.

Prices for the Audi A4 Sedan start at EUR 30,650. The Avant is available at an extra charge of EUR 1,850.

Fuel consumption of the models named above:

Audi A4 2.0 TFSI ultra S tronic 140 kW (190 hp):Combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 5.6 – 4.8** (42.0 – 49.0 US mpg);
Combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 128 – 109 (206.0 – 175.4 US mpg)**

Audi A4 3.0 TDI quattro tiptronic 200 kW (272 hp):Combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 5.4 – 4.9** (43.6 – 48.0 US mpg);
Combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 142 – 129 (228.5 – 207.6 US mpg)**

**Fuel consumption, CO₂ emission figures and efficiency classes given in ranges depend on the tire/wheel sets used.

The new A4 certainly has impressive powertrains maybe even class leading in their power torque and economy. BMW and Mercedes as well as Jaguar will have a very strong rival to deal with here.

Audi Virtual Cockpit

Costs an extra €500
Audi has released a fresh promotional clip for its all-new A4, this time showing off the optional digital instrument cluster.

The A4 is Audi's best-selling model so it shouldn't come as a surprise their marketing department is working around the clock to prepare promotional content for the all-new B9 generation. A while back we saw the optional matrix LED headlightsand now the company with the four ring logo is demonstrating the fancy digital instrument cluster known as the Audi Virtual Cockpit.

Already available in other models such as the TT, Q7 and R8, the digital display costs an extra €500 and replaces the analog dials with a 12.3-inch LCD monitor that has a 1,440 x 540 resolution and provides a smooth 60 fps experience thanks to its powerful graphics processor. Audi promises the virtual needles are extremely precise and the driver will have the possibility of choosing between two modes that are selectable by using the "view" button mounted on the steering wheel.

In infotainment mode, there's a large central window showing off navigation map or lists with data from radio, audio and telephone. When classic mode is selected, the tachometer and speedometer are displayed in just about the same size as the conventional dials and are divided by a smaller central screen to mimic the analog look.

I'm at Audi Eindhoven right now having the GPS tracker on my R8 checked, and they're having a new A4 preview. It's a nice surprise. I thought I would have to wait until next month to see it at the IAA.

Overall I'm impressed. The interior is to die for. Both models have the Audi Virtual Cockpit and it looks superb. The interior just blows the 3 Series and C-Class away. Admittedly I didn't spend longer than a couple of minutes sat in the cars, but on the face of it the interior looks about 10 years ahead of its time. The clarity is brilliant and the resolution is very high. It's far better than the TFT display that I had in a 7 Series a couple of months ago.

The exterior, to me at least, looks even closer to the B8 A4 than in the photos. I think the average person in the street would not be able to tell the B8 and B9 apart. There is a B8 in the showroom next to the B9s and even then, you have to look closely in order to spot the differences.

I'm looking forward to getting behind the wheel of a B9 ASAP.

How was the B9 interior better than the C-Class? Quality-wise, looks..? And if the screen is better than the one in the F01 I'm mighty impressed..

I like the C-Class interior but the A4 just felt more premium. I've spent three days with a virtually brand new C-Class and there were quite a few rattles. And then there's the issue of the "stuck on" sat nav screen in the C-Class. Yes, the A4 sat nav screen is now fixed, but it looks better integrated into the dashboard than the C-Class.

With regards to the screen being better than the F01 7 Series, I'm referring to the instrument display. It's not exactly a fair comparison because the F01 has had that screen for several years now. I'm sure the multifunction display in the new G11 will be on a par with the A4. But the F01 multifunction display does look dated already when you look at how it's executed in the new A4.

How many KM's did that C have? Ours has 1000km now. Feels like a bank vault with impeccable finish. It was built in South Africa.

I wouldn't use 'rattles' as test of quality for any of the Germans. My Audi S3 felt bank vault in terms of build, but in the last 2000Km rattles are rearing their ugly head. The car is now about 14 months old with 12,000km.

With each passing day, my initial strong criticism I had for this carhas seemingly waned.

This is a shame regarding the C-class. I thought the quality issues were isolated with the US-built C's.

All German cars below the midsize executive class either rattle or exhibit snap-crackle-pop effect in my experience after a certain amount of time on the road.

I will say this though about the new B9 A4... it is going to murder the LCI F30 in terms of interior quality as, in my recent experience, the F30 facelift has yielded no tangible improvements in key quality areas. Disappointed.

Merc's C-Class interior is overrated - especially when you take into account that the centre console has no gear lever. A non-issue for some but a major ergonomic put-off for me. So, for all intents and purposes - my appraisal from afar of the B9's interior is borne out by Betty Swollocks' personal feedback.

Taking into account that even the current A4 is outselling BMW's 3er by far and sells not even so much less than Benz's C-Klasse (which is 7 years younger than the A4), I predict this new A4 is going to outsell it's competitors in the German market.
