SL-Class (R232) [Official] All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

The Mercedes-Benz R232 is the seventh generation of the SL-Class roadster. It succeeds both the R231 and the GT R190 (roadster). Presented in October 2021, the R232 was an AMG model only, until the introduction of the Mercedes-Maybach SL in August 2024. Production: March 2022-

The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

That 200-400K is nothing!

The W111 280SE 3.5 cabriolets and coupes are absolutely fascinating automobiles. And BRABUS Classic restorations are among the very best in the business. These are cars that perfectly embody the term "class".
I don't know...Somehow, cars in general were "more fascinating" some 5 or more decades ago.

Indeed. But I’d much rather pay $ 800,000 for that impeccable, really like brandnew green cabriolet than anything AMG or Brabus, based on contemporary Benz’s, has on offer today.
I once sat in one and it is like going back in time, as if you are actually sitting in a 280 SE 3.5 in a MB showroom in the seventies. It’s a Brabus masterpiece.

I adore the current SL. It's a real beauty in person and Mercedes philosophy of proportion and design purity really shines through.

But I can't help but think it should have just been an AMG GT convertible with a more complaint suspension set up, more sound deadening and some more luxury oriented exterior wheel, trim and interior trim and leather options. A Maybach version would have also been possible given the suspension wizardry Mercedes has its its arsenal.

The AMG GT looks like it could be just as beautiful if not more beautifully proportioned and detailed than the SL in person. Along with the fact it is ultimately more exotic, as it doesn't share its face with an A class, is the nail in the SL's coffin. Unless you absolutely must have a convertible.

I've contemplated this myself. A luxurious Maybach version of the AMG GT coupe, of course devoid of the silly logos on the hood or elsewhere, certainly appears tempting.

Except for the bonnet motifs I like the chrome add ons and specifically like the wheels the most. The interior looks great in the white leather, but I feel they could have at least replaced the black piano plastic with some wood or other metallic trim panels for the dash and door panels to differentiate it further from a standard AMG SL and make the interior more classy.

Now I feel like Maybach is just a halfway step upwards in luxury, they need to make their changes more appealing and bespoke.

For a SL680 badged model, they could have used the higher output AMG GT 63 Pro engine with 450kw (612PS) to further distance it from the SL63.

It's like they're teetering on something great, but the bean counters/management won't let it happen. This could have been a real desirable piece, with the V12 too. Just my personal wish. More bespoke interior and less emblems and more technical differences and they could have almost charged whatever they wanted for it. We know Mercedes can build the best car on planet, but why won't they do it? Rolls and Bentley are unimpeachable now. I know they see and know this. CLE should have had the E interior. I6 and V8 in cars like the SL and C and the list goes on and on. Everything is so half assed.

M

The reverse is true.

The R129 SL was actually based on a modded W124 E-Class platform and was not handmade.

The current R232 SL sits on a unique AMG-engineered platform. It's not even shared with the previous generation GT or SL. This is one of the reasons it is so expensive. It is said to have a body structure that is 40-50% stiffer than that of the outgoing GT.
I can tell you it absolutely delivers on the driving end. Calling mediocre is just trash talk until you actually experienced it. It is just another expensive toy for the rich.
As far as I know , the previous GT had also a platform not shared with any other MB , and the previous GT was dirt cheap when it was released (what it made it also so popular : competitive price )

Let's not make MB a saint by saying that "the price is justified"

The use of so much plastic ( "black piano" ) , and the almost identical interior design between cars is a massive cost saving decision.

While in the past you could say that there were also lots of shared parts , we live in 2024 now. Where you can make a custom button in your garage with a 3D printer and a CNC ( overly exagerated , of course . But it's way cheaper to make/engineer a product in this days , than it was 20-30 years ago )

I have read reports that the previous generation GT, chassis code C190 was a simplified version of the C197 SLS. That being the case, the development costs were massively cut in the process. The R232 Chassis code is new from the ground up and supports virtually two vehicles with slightly different themes for a different set of clients. This is also part of the price increases.

I think in the right spec (regular hood, million spokes wheel) it will look good. The problem then becomes there is very little customization available. Mercedes is really stingy with their top colors now and some reviewers are saying you can only get the white interior for the first year. That is really stupid and defeats the purpose.

M
I think it is a dumb idea to only sell red and white exterior colours with only white interior when the regular SL models have a MANUFAKTUR exterior colour choices and interior leather colours which are more tasteful.

These are seriously good looking examples of the R232 SL. GENUINE class.

Yep they have it backwards. Every and any color you want should be available especially for a price. Oh well. The horse is good and dead now lol.

M

Yep, but I’d argue that they know they’re just too cheap to do it. I think some within are still shell shocked over the 57/62 bespoke Maybach failure.

M

Mercedes needs a visionary as their CEO. Like Zetshce. Ola is too scared and too mcuh of a bean counter instead. The best he will probably do is cut costs and improve return per vehicle. I hope I'm wrong. The next 3 to 4 years are critical for his tenure.

The BMW Skytop looks far more interesting compared to the SL63 Maybach. The production car would not look this sleek of course but the sheet metal changes are congruent to the sporty theme built off the 8-Series. Mercedes just slapped on a lipstick Maybach package for the SL when there should have been proper sheet metal changes and many more color options.

I'll take the Maybach SL over this anytime.
