The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

Not even their flagship cars.....no wonder they make so many profits.

"Orange peel"
"The worst paint on a car I have ever seen"
"Very poor quality paint", etc.
"Poorly made vehicle in general"

FULL OF SHIT.

I've driven at least 3 examples of the SL63. They can complain about the paint on a particular example, but it is NOT a poorly made vehicle.

And those who continue to criticise the interior are talking out of their asses. I've had enough experience with comparable vehicles to know its absolutely fine. Better than a 911.

Maybe, I have noticed that they (sometimes) draw on comments from social networks to conceptualize their videos, in their scripts you can literally hear things that we read in forums and so on.

Although I like them, they are things you fall into when you want or have to make a lot of videos.
Having produced a pre-social media car TV show I know why I'm telling you this.

Rather, I appreciate the feedback from those who tried it, the SL has always had a place in my mind.
I maintain that, in general terms, I have not seen that the testers love it madly blindly, as with those of before

I mean did you see the clip of him pushing in the door panel at 3:10? That is crazy. And most of the other new MB's I've been in have been super disappointing from a build quality perspective. You seriously need to be on another level of delusion to think the build is better than a 911 let alone even close to being on the same level. It's unfortunate that my sister's 8 year old A3 has a better built interior than most modern MB's as someone who loves the brand.

Omg. The upper portion of the door card flexes when you press on it with force. Shit how? Every time I sit in a car I can't help but press on the upper portion of a door card. It's just part of the driving experience. NOT. You touch CONTACT points in a vehicle. Every modern vehicle would have issues with flex and or creak on certain surfaces and trims. Yes the EQ's have major issues with contact points. The SL does not.

I own a 992 GTS. Its sitting in my garage right now with orange peel on its very expensive paint job. I've experienced it and all of its issues. They've taken 4 months to find a buzz in the driver's door card and they still can't fix it. Parts of the door grab handle feel like a Matel toy and so on. My M4 was better finished & better built.

And don't start with Audi. They used to be stars of perceived build and finish. But that never stopped them from developing buzzes and rattles. And now they're plastic shit shows in a lot of ways.

1st. Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet

Road roar hampers its GT credentials, but it’s stunningly complete in almost every other respect. Subtler than the SL but also more detailed and rewarding.

2nd. Mercedes-AMG SL 55

Fantastically capable in isolation but somewhat confused. Loses some GT slickness in an attempt to chase the 911 but never lands any convincing blows.

These cars are worlds apart in character. The 911 is loud and raw relative to the SL, which is something different in character entirely.

The Mercedes pricing there is absolutely bonkers or the Porsche is cheap. The 911 GTS Cabriolet is more expensive than a similarly equipped SL63 here.

The SL55 will still be good enough for anyone who wants a sporty GT but don't drive rag the car through corners or attend car meets.

I sure would like to think they've made some real changes to the body, but I don't think they have. I would love to see a SL680 with the V12, a far more bespoke interior and some true upscale touches to justify what will be a huge asking price. Fingers crossed.

An SL680 would indeed be quite nice

I think it's like the upcoming facelift of the S class. The machinery used to press and mold the body panels is supposed to be extremely expensive to change up.

I wonder if this comes with a detuned version of E Performance.

It's about bloody time. But I'm not sure how well the SL design will pull off the Maybach styling.

Would have loved to have seen a body more in line with the bespoke concept, but that was wishful thinking. This is obviously much cheaper to develop.

Fingers crossed 🤞🏿

I wonder why the A-pillar has been covered up. I hope that they don't give it a garish (IMO) chrome treatment. Mercedes seems quick to resort to chrome on Maybach models. An anodised aluminum finish (matt charcoal) could look good, if somewhat similar to all other SLs. Body colour is another option for the A-pillar. Let's see....
