The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

Order release probably in mid-March 2022 with SL 43 AMG and SL 63 AMG 4matic
Orders for the SL 63 4matic+ (585 hp) and SL 43 AMG (381 hp) will probably be released in mid-March 2022.

Now it has become known that the SL 43 AMG has the M139 2.0 liter 4-cylinder. It has 1,991 cc and is therefore not an M254.

To what extent he now has the e-turbocharger from Formula 1 is not known.

It is likely that it will not have one, since the entire series does not have 48 volts (ISG). The later AMG E Performance Hybrid models will then receive 400 volts.

The SL 43 AMG was actually expected to have the same powertrain as the new C 43 AMG 4matic (W206).

The C 43 AMG 4matic is based on the M254 4-cylinder with 48 volt ISG system (20 hp) and the e-turbocharger known from Formula 1 to avoid turbo lag and thus linear / direct response.
The C 43 AMG 4matic is to receive 390 hp.

The SL 43 AMG is now based on the M139. The power is 280 KW or 381 HP. This puts it 5 KW / 6 HP below the A 45 AMG 4matic (without the S package) with the same M139.

As a difference to the 4.0 liter V8 AMG SL models, the AMG SL 43 has rear-wheel drive and four round instead of four square tailpipes.

With the sales release in March 2022, the SL 43 AMG with 381 hp and the SL 63 AMG 4matic+ with 585 hp will be available to order.

Due to the delays in the AMG E Performance plug-in hybrid, the SL 55 AMG 4matic with 476 hp and V8 could not only be offered in the USA as planned, but also in Europe.

So I guess no I6 SL. A shame. 4-cylinders don't belong in the SL.

The cabin looks like a lovely place to be for those who find the AMG GT to feel a bit cramped and small for "BIG" people.

Later comes the SL 43 AMG and the AMG SL with AMG E Performance Hybrid.

The SL 43 AMG has rear-wheel drive and delivers 381 hp with its 2.0-litre 4-cylinder M139.

Deliveries will start at the end of April 2022.

Wow the new SL is very pricey:
Yup. It's not a cut price AMG GT. I think the 43 AMG will be a popular model.

The 2L Jaguar F-Type was laughed at and dismissed when it was launched. However, it turned out to sell so well that Jaguar had discontinued the V6 variant.

As awesome as the V8 SL is, the engine and power is overkill for some who just want a fast and engaging Mercedes convertible sports car. :)

Of all SLs' from 1963 onwards, the R129 was and remains the one that impressed me most. I'm a big fan of the W113 "Pagoda" as well.

New SL is all AMG, which is ok. But what if I want a more sophicated SL? A SL with a 6 or 8 cylinder engine, that doesn’t wake my neighbours in the morning, with an acceptable level of comfort.
These customers have to look elsewhere.

The E Performannce, with its 7-mile electric only range should be able to get you out the neighborhood before waking up the engine, lol.

I know their was to be a 43 version but that wont be the SL crusier as you talking about. Yes it would have been nice to have like a normal SL 400 or SL500 for the clients who dont want a hardcore SL.

R129 was when the SL kicked things up a notch.
it would have been interesting to see the rivalry against the stillborn E31 BMW 8er Cabrio.

MERCEDES-AMG SL 43 RECEIVES M139 WITH 280 KW AND 48 VOLT TECHNOLOGY!

After the 8-cylinder SL 55 4MATIC+ and SL 63 4MATIC+ have already been presented for the Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster generation, the smaller version will soon follow – with 4 cylinders and, according to our information, now actually with M 139 (variant M 139.580) drive with exactly 280 kW (at 6750 rpm) and 480 Nm (between 4,250-5,000 rpm).

The Mercedes-AMG SL 43 receives the AMG 4-cylinder petrol engine M 139 with 1,991 cc displacement (variant M 139 E 20 LR A, 90 mm cylinder spacing, 83 mm bore, 92 mm stroke), which has so far only been installed transversely. For the SL series, the 4-cylinder is adapted accordingly and now installed longitudinally. A power level of exactly 280 kW is used in conjunction with the 9-speed automatic transmission (725.103). The transmission has a wet clutch and can be used for the first time with an AMG 4-cylinder gasoline engine (K9A 750M). The spread of the gearbox is 8,902.

Starter generator with 48 volt technology

A new feature is a belt-driven starter generator in 48 volt technology, which generates the electricity for the 48 volt on-board electrical system and also supplies the conventional 12-volt on-board electrical system by means of a DC/DC converter. The 48 volt battery associated with the 48 volt electrical system increases the battery capacity in the vehicle, which provides additional electrical energy.

Adapted M 139 in longitudinal installation

Compared to the transversely mounted M 139, the drive is adapted in many respects. This eliminates the CAMTRONIC on the exhaust side, and split cooling with 3 modified cooling circuits (high-temperature circuit, as well as low-temperature circuit 1 and 2) and a balance shaft (Lanchester compensation) are also used. Charging takes place via a new, electric and single-flow 48 volt exhaust gas turbocharger with actuator boost pressure control flap. In addition, an active crankcase ventilation with electrically controlled partial separator is used. The M 139 has two intercoolers, which are integrated in the low-temperature circuit 1 and are cooled indirectly via the ambient air and the existing coolant in the circuit.

4-cylinder SL does not receive 4MATIC all-wheel drive

While all other engines of the new SL Roadster receive variable all-wheel drive (4MATIC+), the 4-cylinder version of the SL 43 has to do without it. As standard, the SL 43 is equipped with an AMG sports suspension without adjustable damping.

The SL 43 will be offered in all markets – starting with Europe from around May 2022. In the US, the model is expected to be available in November, in Australia from October 2022.

The SL43 is going to be much lighter with the absence of the V8 and 4-Matic AWD.
