The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

Damn, I got the, as the kids say, the "feels" with those pics.

This pic on the other hand....that's wrong. A straight-six? Sure. In fact, I welcome it. But a 4-pot in a modern-day SL? Nope. Just nope.

I really hope there is a 6-cylinder SL coming because this 4-cylinder is just nonsense. I hope it isn't sold here.

M

The powerband is impressive for a 4-pot though. The fact that it will do 171mph (275km/h) is also very impressive. I believe the 4-pot will sell well with the baby boomers as someone noted. The article posted by @Rolf says it will be available in all markets, including the US.

The price of the 43 could undercut the 55 model by as much as $50,000 minimum I am guessing.

The SL43 is a useful 140kg lighter than the V8 models and the performance stats seem quite impressive. It will probably be the sportier drivers choice with RWD and lighter engine up front. 275km/h top speed is fast for a humble 2.0 inline 4.

This particular car exterior and interior colour combo is perfect in my opinion, it looks stunning.

A proper engine and a proper SL.

That weight difference is nothing to be sniffed it and the majority of it is in the front.

Turn-in and weight transfer is likely to feel noticeably different in the 4pot. Peak torque comes after 3,250rpm which isn't ideal for a GT. However, if you don't plan to drive the car in anger or overtake above 70mph then this power plant is ample. For markets where car taxes are high, the 43AMG will be a no brainer over the V8. Furthermore the low cylinder count makes is suitable as company car.

There was a similar case in the past, in which a four cylinder derived from an existing 8 cylinder was prefered agains a 6 cylinder. The video is from the early 80s and the car is a Porsche and it is in German language but the reasoning behind this choice must be very similar to the current one

It's pretty in this spec, but that 4-cylinder sound is awful.

M
That video does sound odd, in some scenes it goes loud and then sounds like their is no sound. The 4-cylinder just drones in some scenes. Wish they would show it revving from the exhaust. The particular car spec looks really beautiful, its an absolutely stunning car this new SL.

I have been comparing the SL43 specs to some other Mercedes models and looking at them in detail, something seems odd. The fuel consumption claims seem high for a 4-cylinder engine, even higher than the 150kg heavier and less powerful E450 4-Matic Coupe with 3.0ltr inline 6.

Also it has 10kw more power and 100kg lighter mass than the CLS450 but they have identical 0-100km/h time of 4.9sec. It would seem the SL43 should be at least 4.8sec or 4,7sec. Maybe its slower cause of RWD vs AWD?

It's so interesting and very telling that there has to be so many reasons given over and over (excuses IMO) for why someone would want a 4-cylinder SL when everyone knows (or should know) that the basic blueprint for the SL is V8 500/550 model, and has been so for years. You don't have to sell a V8 SL it's understood, or even an I6 SL. A 4-cylinder is not a luxury car engine no matter how much weight or fuel it save or how much less it costs. Doesn't matter who is driving, it old people are not. If you're so old that you don't ever really drive the thing then why buy an SL. What good is more agility with no power? It's all specious.

The R107 was launched as a V8 in the 350SL in 1971. This car was the one that made the ubiquitous Mercedes V8 famous in the 350SL, 450SL, 500SL and in US 560SL and followed on in the R129, R201 and R202.

No 4-cylinder can fill in for a Mercedes V8, its a Sin!!

The original SL 600 V12 made about as much power as this. I am sure there are buyers for which this is perfect and they won’t even know what they are missing from higher spec models.

The not so exotic exhaust note is to be expected. 4 cylinder engines rarely sound good when revved out.

I don't understand the crying about offering a 4 cylinder to be honest. Don't like it, don't buy it. Mercedes will kill it if it doesn't sell. In reality, I think it'll help MB meet their goal of meeting certain emissions targets in some markets, decrease the age of its buyers, and help them focus on selling high margin units. The 55, 63, and 63 e-performance models will be very exclusive models to have.
