SL-Class [Official] All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

The All-new Mercedes-AMG SL (R232)

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

The local dealer here has at least a dozen 2022 SL63's on the lot.
I just checked auto trade uk and there are 17 SL listed at 0 or delivery mileage. All listed at list price.

Not a good sign during the summer of the car‘s first model year. It will be less appealing once the more beautiful and sporty AMG GT has debut.

Mercedes has overpriced the SL, period. A SL63 is not a 200K car, neither is the Maserati Granturismo. Both are speeding toward discounts, if the SL isn't already there. The local dealer here has at least a dozen 2022 SL63's on the lot.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread - they really screwed up on the SL release. I bet those 2022's showed up in late November or December, at which point the 2023's were starting to hit the lots at the same time. There was a ridiculous amount of 2022s manufactured, held up at ports, then released at the end of the year exactly when people are not looking to drive an effectively 1 year old car. At one point there were heavy incentives on 2022s to clear that glut out but they may have expired.

In the UK there is always a new registration plates are released on the 1st March and 1st September.

No imagine conscious person in the UK will pay list price for $100k+ SL with a 6 month old registration plate.

At the end of 2019 Aston Martin had a glut Vantages that were cleared using a bargain finance offer of £1000 down and £1000 per month for 4 years.

There are 35 SL55 and SL63 in stock on Mercedes UK online shop now with £5k discounts if you order by 30 September. Still looking at the best part of £140k for a SL55 and £170k for a SL63.

It’s big money to pay for an all-rounder that lacks a unique selling point. The AMG GT will be prettier and more fun to drive, whilst an E53 or C63 will offer the same tech and the same driving experience for less.

Unless you truly love the roadster shape or want a convertible Mercedes, there isn’t a compelling reason for buying one. Looking outside of the brand the Ferrari Roma and DB12 are visually more compelling and probably cheaper to buy on finance.

SL as a brand died years ago and has been in the shadow of the G-Class, AMG GT and SLS which have been more aggressively marketed.

For all the criticism you can levy at the SL I completely disagree that you get the same driving experience in a E53 or a C63. They drive quite differently, with the E53 being far more relaxed and less athletic and the C63 being relegated to a E-performance hybrid. Even the W205 C63 was altogether different, as it has a rough ride and muscle car approach to dynamics.

In the realm of personal opinion, saying the Roma convertible is more visually compelling gives me pause. That giant hump in the rear is just hideous in my eyes.

Yeah agreed, it's awkward.
The SL looks gorgeous at least, but it's slightly too big for a Roadster IMO

The SL is probably very pleasant behind the wheel and there will be a suppleness to it that’s noticeable over lesser Mercs. Whether the average car buyer is able to notice nuances or adds weighting to them is another matter.

The old G-Wagon was super dated but had insane demand, the Urus is a popular all-rounder and some supercars are comfortable enough to daily. In isolation it has merits but int he wider context of Mercedes’ portfolio and cars by other manufacturers, it’s not a strong proposition as it was 20 years ago.

As for the Roma. It wouldn’t be my choice of coupe as the infotainment would likely drive me nuts. However, I would own one if I was keen to step on the Ferrari ladder and butter up a local dealership for an allocation of a mid-engine Ferrari.

Looking forward to seeing how the AMG GT will compare against the SL. The former will be firmer but I wonder whether there will be softer sprung variants that are close to the SL in ride quality.

2024 Mercedes-AMG SL63 Manufaktur Big Sur Debuts Looking Like A California Sunset

The special-edition model will make its public appearance at Pebble Beach this week.

Mercedes-AMG launches today the 2024 SL63 Manufaktur Big Sur. The limited-production, special-edition model is only for the US, receiving a unique visual makeover inside and out.

Mercedes finishes the model in Manufaktur Orange Flame Metallic paint. Black brake calipers, 21-inch black wheels, and a black soft top with elements from the AMG Exterior Chrome Package add contrast. The SL63 also wears an AMG emblem on the front fascia, a first for the model.

The Manufaktur upgrade includes hand-stitched Mystic Red/Black Nappa leather with orange contrast stitching inside. The color combination is used on the seats, steering wheel, armrest, center door panels, and lower instrument panel. The car features deep-pile floor mats with embroidered AMG logos and chrome "Manufaktur" script on the center console.

The 2024 SL63 Manufaktur Big Sur packs the model's twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine under the hood. It produces the same 557 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque as the standard AMG SL63.

The car's nine-speed automatic transmission channels power to the car's AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The convertible can sprint to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 196 mph.

Standard features include the Performance Trim Line with Front Axle Lift System, the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, and AMG Active Ride Control. Passengers will enjoy a Burmester surround sound system and the Driver Assistance Package.

The launch of the SL63 Manufaktur Big Sur also signals the launch of the Manufaktur program in the US for the AMG SL lineup. US customers will have more customization options with the 2024 model.

Mercedes will offer three new exterior paints and two Nappa leather upholstery options through the Manufaktur program. The company detailed the available customization options earlier this year, offering buyers unique color choices.

The car will make its public debut during Pebble Beach, August 17-19, at the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge during Monterey Car Week. The special-edition SL will break cover alongside the AMG GT. The new GT will share a lot with the convertible and compete against cars like the Porsche 911. It'll have a V8 engine, but the automaker will also offer it with plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Mercedes didn't say when the 2024 SL63 Manufaktur Big Sur would be available nor how many it plans to produce. The regular AMG SL63 starts at $183,000 (the price does not include the destination charge), so we expect the Manufaktur model to command a premium over that.

I can't get excited about a gold SL. I would be much more excited about Mercedes launching and internal quality initiative for the next model year. Upgraded materials, fit and new switchgear, less black plastic and sturdier dashboards and high quality door panels.

How about bringing back the V12 for the Maybach version with more bespoke interior finish wise? You know put some substance back in the products.

Yes to the interior, hell no to that super heavy V12 sitting in the nose. The SL is wonderfully balanced and that would be a step backwards imo.
