CLA (C117) [Official] 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz C117 is the first generation of the CLA series of luxury subcompact executive cars marketed as a four-door coupé. Model codes: C117 (4-door coupé), and X117 (shooting brake). It is succeeded by the CLA (C118). Production: 2013-2019.
How bright does the star shine? Enough to make you blind! :)

PS: And I don't mean you in particular.

The luster is slowly returning. They're hitting the market from all sides this year, entry CLA, middle FL E, and top with a new S. Next up the bottom-middle, the next C. I think they're going to be alright, enough so to earn back my business in a few years hopefully.

I've got mixed feelings. I love the new A, such an improvement, ML is okay for an SUV, GLK is better than before, but still meh, same with the CLS. SLK looks good too. This CLA though, yuck! Same goes for the new E-class, which was such a disappointment for me.
These are of course just my personal opinions based on aesthetics, not how they drive or anything else. I think they're on the right way though, interiors have become so much better looking and feeling too IMO, so I think the few following years will be very bright for them.

//Merc, was that rating sarcastic?

It seems to be, but I'm still apprehensive about some of the suspension and transmission issues that appear to be evident in the CLA , A-class and SLK. I've also read reports about ESP systems that are not perfectly calibrated on the A, ML and GL, so it seems like some fine tuning of these areas is necessary before the cars are considered truly outstanding. It's a shame really, because the W204 marked a point where MB nailed the overall cohesiveness of the vehicle, particularly the suspension tune and steering.

There's no doubt about that :)

Well no carmaker has achieved perfection, there are going to be glitches everywhere with all automakers. Compared to to pre-2007 Mercedes is doing so much better, the only thing is that competition doesn't wait around for the champ to get himself together. They kick him while he is down. Mercedes is still in catch up mode, but the new S might prove that they're back on top for real now. Transmission and suspension tuning are small stuff compared to failing suspensions and transmissions and iffy build quality of a few years ago. Mercedes is new to the DC type gearbox, so it shows in the CLA. Not sure why they just don't use the SLS' DC gearbox or a version of it, or let AMG tune the most basic version of it for the CLA.

Yeah that's fair enough, but what bothers me is that they've now got issues in areas they've never had issues before i.e harsh suspension set ups and poorly calibrated ESP's.

The engineers may be stretched too thin? I just can't wait to get to NYC in a couple of weeks to see more of the E facelift and the CLA45 AMG.

M

Perhaps, or limited $ to allocate to fine tuning? I'm really looking forward to seeing the newer vehicles too. The S-class is promising to be something spectacular.

The CLA 45 AMG might sport the larger brakes? :)

How I wish this was not fish-eye lens effect but exactly how "right" the proportions of the front overhang to the tire looked in real life.

Then this Mercedes isn't for you guys. I don't know what you want them to do here lol. Really, there are so many things I don't like about today's Mercedes compared to 20 years ago, but it is what it is. I think you all need to see this car in person and out on the road.

I saw a lightly disguised one Monday on the road. It looks stumpy. Tall but narrow and short. And the back-seat looked virtually kid-only...

But I will know all the time that it is there and it will bug me. I am buying a MB, therefore expect a profile that is better than an Elantra. If not caring about this, they may as well not shop MB at all.

Agreed.

And whats up with the black weld line on the roof? Audi has seamless welds and at least BMW paints them body-color. It sticks out like a sore thumb IMO on a light color car. Like something you would see on the Hyundai too...

In my opinion whatever side of the fence you're sitting I doubt anyone will call this a beautiful car. But it certainly looks 'interesting'. Good/great looking I don't know, but it seems to me quite striking. A lot of the new smartphone crowd will like it perhaps. I guess Mercedes are right with the 'young/young at heart' for this one. I won't be buying it tho. Not to say that I am that old..

I think the front could have been resolved better, it certainly looks better from the rear. Which being an AMG, is what most will be seeing really

+1(y) It's there, you can't miss it, has road presence and it is striking. But has too much awkwardness and can look unbalanced form too many angles. Headlights too large and wheels too small vs body proportions.

Ye gotta say I agree. Interestingly tho, I thot d SLK lights were too big in pics as well. IRL it's much much better and dare I say the SLK is quite a little stunner IRL...

The CLA I think is something to be seen in the flesh tho. I'm guessing it'll be a tad better

I have to disagree about the SLK tho...
The first time I saw it irl I was like... "That's the fugliest car I've ever seen in my whole life!" and it's still in my top 10 :D
