GLE [Official] 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG


The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.
Yep...after looking it over, don't like it. The regular ML is VERY soft looking and feminine, this spruces it a bit more but not by much. It's like the regular ML is a little 8 year old girl, this AMG is that same little girl but in football gear (american). Sure it looks tougher, but still a little girl.

L.A. Autoshow: Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG crosses over with attitude

Mercedes-Benz is revealing its next-generation ML63 AMG at the Los Angeles auto show, bringing hot-rod attitude to its brawny SUV. The ute launches in early 2012, pumping out a beefy 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque from the biturbo V8 channeled via all-wheel drive.

And for the first time, enthusiasts can check the box for the performance pack, an AMG option that raises output by 32 hp and 44 lb-ft of torque, with visual features that include a performance steering wheel, a carbon-fiber engine cover and red brake calipers.

Standard equipment includes a leather interior set off with a black headliner, AMG bodywork and sports seats.

Only red brake calipers. This must suck for Mr. Artist :D
 
but I must say Performance package from Benz are better than BMW, MB gives you extra power.

Or MB makes customers pay for what they should have gotten free of extra charge in the first place.
 
That and I also think a lot AMG owners don't really want a hardcore car they want the extra power and handling without all the extra/expensive parts. This gives you a choice. If you're plunking down 90K for a SUV what is an extra 5-7K?

Yes I agree its silly to pay extra for powerupgrade, even though its "only" 7K extra. It still extra money for something they could just have given a away for free, afterall its their top performance model. But BMW does the same with 335i.

In this case, I'd rather pay for extra power (however you figure it) rather than some "new" trim or whatever have you. Hell even the rims are a rip-off since you can get better rims for cheaper if you shop BBS or HRE.
 
Any one know if the new ML still has a transfer box ?

Full programme: ON&OFFROAD package for all eventualities

For those wishing to drive the M-Class more extensively away from surfaced roads, we recommend the optional ON&OFFROAD package.The ON&OFFROAD package for the new M-Class uses a range of six transmission modes to optimise driving dynamics and handling safety, by ensuring that the necessary drive control is there to cope with the very different operating conditions encountered on and off-road. One automatic mode, two specifically off-road modes and three on-road modes are available.

The system is controlled via a rotary actuator on the centre console. The settings for AIRMATIC, and the drive line, are adapted to accommodate these specific requirements.

The six transmission modes in detail:

•Automatic – covers most everyday driving operations

•Offroad 1 – light terrain, dirt roads and tracks

•Offroad 2 – challenging off-road terrain with hilly stretches

•Winter – for driving in wintry conditions on slippery roads, on snow, ice or with snow chains

•Sport – more adventurous, dynamic driving on winding roads

•Trailer – optimises moving off, manoeuvring and braking with a trailer


Despite so many options, for the driver the decision is always very clear: the setting is made intuitively, and the programme selected is shown in the multifunction display as well as in very realistic, almost photo-quality imagery on the screen of the COMAND system. Irrespective of which underlying programme is set, the gear reduction, lock, DSR or the self-levelling suspension of the AIRMATIC system can all be adjusted individually. As with the basic settings of the ON&OFFROAD package, it is practically impossible for the driver to make mistakes. Illogical settings, which might have a negative impact on handling, safety or traction, are ruled out. If there is any doubt, the system will revert to automatic mode.

In terms of "hardware", the ON&OFFROAD package comprises an underride guard, a two-stage transfer case with reduction gear, a longitudinal differential lock and enhanced AIRMATIC functionality that allows a maximum ground clearance of 285 millimetres and a fording depth of 600 millimetres.

It's a lot of money, that's what it is. For that money you will soon have ceramic brakes on the M5. And it's clearly not the same because the BMW comes standard with 555 hp and that's the only version as you're well aware of. Drivers pack are some options unrelated to the engine/output. MB has these packs too next to an engine update that should have been standard.

It still extra money for something they could just have given a away for free, afterall its their top performance model. But BMW does the same with 335i.

The 335i isn't exactly the 3er 'top performance model' ;)
