Getting Deliciously Dirty With Clean Diesel

By Matt Davis - Autoblog

Back in July, our man Bowman got his first chance to drive the new Mercedes M-Class in the wilds of Montana, and he came away particularly impressed by the ML350 BlueTEC 4Matic. It's great news that this updated diesel powertrain is coming to the United Stat in November, but in Montana, we missed out on the new-generation On&Offroad Package and innovative Active Curve System.

Just noticed this. This roof strength figure is ASTOUNDING. First car I think the IIHS tested that broke 30K levels of peak-force withstanding. The GLK's number is incredible as well. Not only does the ML LOOK like a tank that will bulldoze right through you, but apparently it is. As well, not only does this look like the best ML ever, letting go of a lot of the effete styling of the previous ones (still looks Soccer-Mom-ish, but much less so), and I'm not saying that I'm in love with the car or look of it all so much as ML's or Benz SUV's aren't a great look to these eyes really, but it looks solid and purposeful, so I give it the "Benz" badge, which is rare for an SUV to get from me.

For comparisons sake, this thing has OVER two times the strength of a 5-Series' roof:

LOL. :D

I say that comparison because the 5-Series' number is one I was focusing on, and know off the top of my head (15K).

Point is, as strong or not strong as anything out there is, the ML's roof is incredibly strong. Shocking, really. I thought the W212's roof strength which set a record just over a year ago at 21K lbs-force withstanding was something that couldn't be topped. Now M-B is at 31+K with the ML? Makes sense, as it's an SUV which means the roof NEEDS to be much stronger than a Sedan, but even compared to other SUV's it's light years ahead!

I can see that the new ML is really a solid car but it's not my cup of tea :D
And you should know best how sensitive I'm when someone's talking bad about my daily :D:D:tongue:

Hahaha, I know how much your Beater's sanctity means to you. :D

Ahh, to have such a car as a beater, definitely must be a good talking point when a petit one in the passenger seat asks "If this is your "Daily", then WHAT'S your garage queen?" :D

The ML isn't my thing at all either actually, though I finally don't actually "hate" an ML. I would actually love one as a beater, though! Talk about a sense of safety!

Yes, with the ML it's all about safety when/if you are buying one.
It actually happens to me every time I give a ride to some that doesn't know me. "WOW nice car, so do you have another one... you know... for daily usage" :D:D
When I answer no one believes me :D That I have a Lambo as a beater too to keep my e21 safe :D

LOL!! Seriously. People know that I usually have a beater for my E-Class.... You have an equally positioned car, with the beater aspect flipped around. :D

For those in South Africa i called Mercedes SA and they say june it will be launched and order books open in mid april...

I keep seeing new MLs. Not a lot, but certanly a few of them. I really think it´s a BAD desing. It has a terrible profile, with tons of lines here and there. Rear looks fugly and the front end is bland. As I said, the interior is fantastic. This is happening a year after the introduction, wonder how this thing is gonna last another 6 years...

A conservative design does not mean it has to be a bad one. When you look at the new ML you can see plenty of silly lines almost everywhere, chrome accents that mame the car worse looking, and weird proportions if the car has small rims. I have nothing against conservative designs, but dislike the bad ones.

Lol. Actually, compared to all the other M-B's out, I find the ML's lines to be very "normal" and subdued. Dare I say "refreshingly boring", compared to some of the outlandish and vulgar lines we see on some newer M-B's.
