XJ Official: 2010 Jaguar XJ (X351)

The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across four basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

An inspiration from Holden Caprice ? Is this it Mr. Ian calum? A caprice Jaguar ?

Thank god my hope was not that high since Tata deal was sealed.

The auto industry is the pinnacle of industrialisation. From manufacturing to reaching customers and even after-sales, it employ a colossal number of people. I don't think there isn't any nation that isn't blindly proud of their car manufacturers. In Sweden Volvo's pretty much get top rating/score in every test while BMW, Mercedes and Audi cars get play down for high costs and big engines.

Uh, ok. I think most would be able to figure that out without even knowing the details of the topic of discussion, and not only that but you're talking about something completely different. I'm speaking soley on British automotive journalism. You seem to seize opportunities to present yourself as some sort of voice of reason to correct or challenge someones thoughts or opinions as if you obtain superior knowledge to another. Its weird, I don't get it, but to each his own. There are in fact many journalists that will write frank reviews of cars that come from their homeland, and many of them not always favorable.

No one can seem to wait for Jay Leno to pull the wraps off the redesigned 2010 Jaguar XJ at London's Saatchi Gallery tomorrow, as a bunch of 2010 XJ photos leaked out today.

As expected, the new XJ is a far more distinctive executive sedan than the current model. From the front, it looks a bit like the midsize Jaguar XF. But from the rear it's far more dramatic, thanks to an exaggerated fastback roof line.

The 2010 XJ will offer a variety of engines, ranging from a frugal V6 diesel to a 503-horsepower version of the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that we've already sampled in the 2010 XFR.

Inside Line says: It doesn't look much like XJs of the past, but this might finally be the distinctive sheet metal Jaguar needs to regain a foothold in the luxury sedan segment. — Erin Riches, Senior Editor

The front in remarkable..the rest is debatable. Still a good show by Jaguar.

Front- No comment, I need to see it from a different angle.
Side- very nice, bad B pillar though.
Rear- Two words... Nissan Maxima, and that's not a good thing.

True the W140 S500's V8 did match the V12 in the 1988 750iL, but the 560SEL's SOHC V8 was no match for the V12 in the new BMW. The W140 S500 (and its DOHC, 32V V8) didn't come along until 1992, which meant that it was a good 4 years at which the BMW sat the head of this class in my book.

The LS400 used to beat up on the 420SEL all the time, but in the few times it was compared to the 560SEL it lost.

From what I remember, the lack of torque of the 50i V12 meant that it was not that highly regarded, and considered inferior to a V8 back in the time. And the car itself couldn't be compared to a W126, let alone 140...

But that's not the point.

I like that new XJ alot. Should be spectacular IRL!!

So this is it, after many months of speculation and debate. I was expecting more from this new Jag. The overall design looks like a stretch XF (nothing wrong with that, but just a bit unimaginative) with some awkward details. The XF should have had those headlights, they look too sleek and aggressive for a car like the XJ. The blacked out C-pillar is a joke, I thought the rear windscreen would wrap around them, but instead they have this cheap gloss cover over the C-pillar.

The front end design is ok, it looks like a stretched XF concept car, the side profile is attractive, but the rear end doesn't sit well with the rest of the car. Going to give it a 6.5/10 so far.

Sorry I'm late to the party. But, is it just me of does the rear and side profile kind of look like a citroen?

Well you know me I have the Car and Driver comparo from 1991, 560SEL, LS400, 750iL and Bentley Turbo R. The 750iL won, 560SEL came in second...then Lexus then Bentley. The BMW V12 made 332lb-ft of torque compared to the Benz V8's 287lb-ft so I don't know who would have thought the BMW V12 was inferior to the Benz V8. It was really no contest. It wasn't until the W140 500SEL came along did Mercedes have a V8 on par with BMW's V12.

I don't like the rear, especially the discordant C-pillar treatment. It destroys the flow of the silhouette. The retro-inspired tail styling is reminiscent of the stately Jaguars from the 1960's but it somehow clashes with the modern styling of the front.

But still, it's that faux-glass C-pillar that puts me off the most.

Need to see more, i like the front wich actually the one they showed on the conceot that was supposed to be the xf's inspirator, the side is a question mark but the rear is very much of a let down, from what i see it's not very coherent with the rest and doesn't have a strong identity, very theisisesque.

Front is agressive an elegant whilst also being bold and premium. The side is sleek....rear is dissapointing....looks Korean or even French (Citroen):usa7uh::usa7uh::t-banghea

"I’m talking of the new XJ’s gauge set, normally as boring a part of an automobile as there is — despite many an interior designer’s pretensions to the contrary. The new Jaguar’s, however, is something else entirely, quite literally adding a bit of theatre to an area of automotive design usually as dull as used dishwater.

Essentially, the entire instrument cluster has been replaced with a high-definition TFT (thin film transistor) screen (as in high-end laptops) that, like a computer screen, can be programmed to give a seemingly endless stream of configurations in 3-D animation. For instance, in normal driving mode, the speedo-meter takes pride of place, occupying the centre of the screen with the largest dial. However, flick the XJ into its sport mode and the tachometer gracefully moves centre stage, displacing the now less important speedometer. Adding a bit of visual attitude to the proceedings, the gauges begin throbbing red as the revs rise, while the large, digital gear shift indicator starts burning bright crimson when it’s time to shift gears.

Switch back to normal mode with the circular speedo back in its position of prominence and the digits indicating your actual speed are highlighted with light as if a little digital flashlight was being beamed at the end of the speedo needle. Switch into automatic cruise control mode and the entire speedo — up to your desired cruising speed — turns green while the tach temporarily turns into a histographic gauge for setting the minimum distance between you and the rear of a slower-moving car before applying the brakes. Activate the navigation system and the left part of the gauge set turns into a Google map-quality instruction guide rather than the basic stick diagrams most navi systems provide. "

Sounds awesome.

Not the prettiest car in the world ... but definitely a refreshing edition to the other luxury exotic sedans (Quattroporte, Panamera, Thesis) ... a more exotic alternative to the mainstream offering (S-class, 7er, A8 & LS).

Jag brand has always been something special ... It has a certain flair.

MINI - (MG) Rover - LandRover - Jaguar - Aston Martin - Bentley - Rolls-Royce.

What a portfolio! :icondrool

It's a shame Brits didn't put much effort into preserving British automotive brand power - eg. selling them in a package to some serious (Arab?) investor.

The above mentioned portfolio would be unbeatable in the premium automotive world. So much heritage, so much flair, so much style, so much prestige ... Ultimate brands. Shame the products didn't always fit the brand image.

Now the products fit the brand image, but the portfolio disassembled - MINI & RR & Bentley are "German", (MG) Rover is "Chinese", LandRover & Jaguar are "Indian", and Aston is "Arabic".

What a great story (British automotive industry) with such a sad & bitter end. :t-banghea

The interior sounds amazing. I have to say, this car doesn't speak my personal language, and to be fair, the XJ's never have. But THIS is what Jaguar is supposed to be about, it's supposed to out-flair, and out-sex the competition. Never one to be modest or run-of-the-mill.

I am really rooting for the return of the true "Jaguar", and I think they are on the right track. I just hope more people start buying them, as it's been a tough road for them these past years.

I can't wait to see the interior. To me, the XF's interior has always come across as nice but a bit cold. Hopefully the XJ will have an even nicer interior.
