Q7 Next generation Audi Q7 - CGIs, info, spy pics

Center console looks good, but what is with the trend (i.e. AMG-GT) of placing the gear shifter behind the user interface controls? Wouldn't the driver prefer to have it closer to the armrest?

I think the idea is, certainly on the A8 and it appears on this also, that the gear lever IS the arm rest for when you want to use the touchpad. That's how it's designed anyway.

Thanks for jogging my memory, as I remember reading that somewhere awhile back.

In the A8, MMI controls are canted at an angle, so I can see how that works. In this Q7 prototype, it's definitely flatter so I don't see how that's more comfortable. Also is there a chance while resting your wrist, one can nudge the electronic shifter in the A8 out of drive while the car's in motion?

Ergonomics.

It seems to have S-Klasse style metal switches.

At this stage, the Q7 exterior already looks old to me. The MMI layout did not fully convince me in the A8 and here, it seems even worse.

2016 Audi Q7 spied in the night with very thin camouflage and matrix LED headlights

Looks sharper and less bulky
The second generation Audi Q7 has returned in a fresh batch of revealing spy shots taken late in the night.

The images were captured at 3 AM showing Audi putting the finishing touches on the second generation Q7. The SUV's bulkiness will soon be history as the overhauled model will feature a significantly sharper design heavily influenced by Audi's latest facelifts. The prototype was wearing a thin layer of camouflage so now we get to take our best look at Ingolstadt's flagship SUV which as you can see will be offered with optional matrix LED headlights.

Other noticeable features include very small fog lights, LED taillights, Audi's now familiar hexagonal enlarged front grille, smaller third side window and a more subtle roof-mounted rear spoiler. In a previous batch of spy shots we saw some bits and pieces of the interior, including a fresh four-spoke steering wheel, bigger touchpad, free-standing touchscreen display and analog dials which could be replaced with digital ones for the production-spec car.

The 2016 Audi Q7 will be introduced in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and is expected to go on a massive 800 lbs (363 kg) diet. It will be powered by upgraded versions of the familiar six- and eight-cylinder engines and there’s also going to be a 373 HP & 700 Nm plug-in hybrid derivative which will reportedly get a 3.0-liter V6 TDI teamed up with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery.

There should also be a range-topping SQ7 model which will likely use the same hardware arrangement as the RS5 TDI concept, a twin-turbo V6 3.0-liter TDI working with an electric turbocharger and a lithium-ion battery pack. In the concept it provides 385 HP (283 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) but the heavier SQ7 will likely improve those numbers significantly.

2015 Audi Q7 drops most of its camouflage in latest spy shots

Sporting an evolutionary design
The second generation Audi Q7 has made a comeback in a fresh set of very revealing spy shots.

Audi unveiled last week at the Los Angeles Auto show the Prologue concept which paves the way for a new styling direction. However, the Q7 full-size SUV was developed before March Lichte was named Audi's design chief so the vehicle's styling doesn't boast the Prologue-inspired design as the first car to inaugurate the fresh appearance will be the next-gen A8 set to arrive late 2016.

The Audi Q7 prototype spotted here adopts an evolutionary design and looks less bulky than the outgoing generation but the styling will likely be criticized by many since it features many similarities with the model is set to replace. There's camouflage only on the upper part of the front grille as well as on the headlights & taillights while the observable metal appears to be sharper but far from being a novelty.

Set to be offered with optional matrix LED headlights, the overhauled Audi Q7 will go on a significant diet estimated at around 363 kg (800 lbs) and will likely feature standard LED taillights. On the inside there will be a new four-spoke steering wheel, larger touchpad, digital dials (not confirmed) and a controversial free-standing touchscreen display.

Expect power to come from updated six- and eight-cylinder engines along with a rumoredSQ7 pairing a twin-turbo V6 3.0-liter TDI with an electric turbocharger and a lithium-ion battery. It's a system borrowed from the RS5 TDI concept where it delivers 385 HP (283 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) but the SQ7 will be significantly heavier so expect a major power bump to match the bulk. There should also be a more frugal e-tron plug-in hybridderivative featuring a 3.0-liter V6 TDI with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. It will allegedly have a fuel consumption of less than 4 liters / 100 km (58.8 mpg US / 70.6 mpg UK) and do 31 miles (50 km) on electric power.

Audi could decide to bring the overhauled Q7 to NAIAS in January or wait until March for the Geneva Motor Show. The model will also form the basis of a more coupe-styled Q8 set to go on sale within the next three years to compete with the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe.

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany.
