X5 New X5 spy pictures and video

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions.

a car that only has one previous generation and totally dominated it's segment doesn't need a revolutionairy style.

If it ain't broke.................

It seem like this "new" model is exteriorwise like a major face-lift. Personally I was hoping for more bangle elements in the design, other than that it will probably be a nice looking car.

I think it is a good evolutionary design, but I too much black plasitc on the bumpers again I think.... I wish they had done a little more with the rear lights though, but overall pretty good. Curious to see what the interior looks like.

I think the rear bumper is mostly fake. It won't be black. You can see some painted metal next to the left exhaust

Following text & pics from Autocar:

BMW is clearly playing it safe with the next generation of its successful X5 4x4 - as these spy shots show, it's planning only mild tweaks to styling.

The new car was caught virtually undisguised in Munich. Even the thin shreds of black tape can't disguise the tidied front end, although it's worth noting that there is no sign of Chris Bangle-inspired 'flame surfacing' along the flanks. One theory might be that BMW is keeping that design trait away from its SUVs and saving it for its Z-model sportscars instead.

There's no word yet on likely engine line-ups for the X5, although there's already been speculation that the twin-turbo engine from the new 3-series coupé might make an appearance. Expect a launch at the end of the year.

Eeewww... I wasn't turned-on by Huck's PS of the front-end. I hope those headlights look better once the tape comes off.

combined w/ the fact that there's glare reflected upon th e lense, it's not like it's exactly clear as to what the actual shape of the headlights is. P.R. pics will be out soon enough.

I like the new LEDs at the rear imitating those in the E92 Coupe.

I'm hoping for a progressive update rather than a major overhaul. The X5 is a winning formula that shdn't be changed.

Hey guys.... just wondering.

I know most of us car enthusiasts know that the current X5 possess a winning formula, and therefore should not be overly modified for this new X5,...BUT, do you think those "normal people" (with much less car knowledge than us) who are in BMW's target market would think that maybe this isn't enough of a change (visually, because they wouldn't know all that much about how the underpinnings have changed and so forth)...so it might not give them enough of an incentive to buy the new X5?

You can tell when you see a new model, coz it looks pretty different from the model it replaced. I'm not too sure most people will really see much of a change between the current X5 and the new X5 that's coming.
Even the E90 3er was an evolution of design rather than a revolution, but you can still very easily tell the difference between the E90 and the E46.

Could BMW have gone too conservative on this one ?? :t-hands:

I'm really puzzled as to why everyone is drawing all these end-means analysis conclusions about a car that hasn't even been launched yet, let alone one you haven't even seen in it's entirety. The X5 will appeal to consumers the same way the last one did; Many were looking for something other than a Sports Utility Vehicle that didn't have all the truck like tendencies and traits that have become the norm in the SUV class. They wanted something that looked aggresive, but packaged reasonably and drove unlike anything else of comparable size, they wanted a sporty drive and dynamics unmatched. A front only BMW could deliver on. They wanted a muscuilar but not overwhelming design that was unique to a rather sterile and generic style of class, the new X5 carries on all these precedents set by it's predecessor.

the reporters are clearly blind, because the sides of the car clearly has flaming surface. Earlier pictures showed it better though

True. Some journalists are just da.n stupid. Some even do not know how "flame surfacing" really looks like.

So, it was not only once we could read 7er was "heavily flame surfaced", thet E90 3er had "almost no traces of flame surfaces" etc.

Some journalists think that "flame surface" is only what Z4 presents. But Z4 is an extreme example of FS.

About FS on new X5: of course there is FS present. That was the point of restyling. Hood is FSed, side flanks are FSed, back is FSed. And the E70 is following the X-family theme X3 has started: chunky look.

Don't be so mad. It's not as bad as it seems.

E70 will not be so chunky as X3 - it will be more refined (look at the spy pics). But it will definitely be more E83 chunky than E53 chubby. X5 will be an angry looker. Imagine muscles, agressivness & sportiness.
