X5 New X5 spy pictures and video

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions.

The X5 is now in it's FEP - so the disguise will slowly peel off and you should see the beautiful wheel designs they have for the new X5 - The marketing is almost upon us as BMW connect the X5 through creative advertising.

As for the PS from AMS the shape is correct with the rear a strong 100%.
The X5 retains a very strong evolutionary approach but with familiar present day BMW cues such as taut surfaces and strong shoulder lines the new car retains the current cars chunky muscular design.

The X5 was the first model to expand BMW 's core business. Which to this day sells brilliantly even in it's final months of production - some countries still have waiting lists. With its popularity and the fact that it is fantastic to drive it has ruled its segment ever since introduction. Of course with new rivals expanding the segment the new model is intent on keeping its core heritage. With the X5 BMW has never looked back and has no intentions to do so when the new model comes on stream.

I haven't seen it. The slingshot roofline is very apparent through this footage, really sporty and dynamic looking but a compromise on rear passenger room, this trade off is fine w/ me though. I think the E83 X5 is still a very attractive design, probably one of the only cars who's design I've stayed on board w/ thorughout the years.

Check out the concave scoop along the wheelbase of the car. Subtle evolution, I'm liking what I'm seeing here.

So the X5 will get similar rearlights to 3er Coupe and 7er? It looks like it.

This car has the least disguise I have seen yet!

Looks very similar to todays car, hopefully we will be able to see the front soon!

it is very similar to today's X5 or it's just me?

From the looks of things, this'll be another tight, pleasent, yet totally unsurprising effort from BMW - much in the same manner as the 3er coupe.

Nothing wrong with cars that are just plain good looking, but we've become spoiled by surprises. Me thinks the era of shock and awe has sadly come to a close.

We will start to see more and more X5 test mules with lese and less camo - since the car is in the FEP phases.

E70 will be evolutionary in exterior design - since it is only a second generation of X5. No need for revolution. And this is also consistent with Bangle's idea that odd generations (1st, 3rd, 5th etc) are revolutionary, while even ones (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc) are evolutionary. So the era of shock (if quoting Osna) will be repeated with V5, V3, X6.

(For a more revealing look check out the Auto Zeitung pictures and compare the rear end of the CGI to the spy photograph and you will see it all coming together.)

The X5 is now in its FEP phase so we will start to see what it looks like underneath the black plastic camouflage.

However some camouflaged X5s will remain testing on the worlds roads as underneath they will cover the mechanicals and chassis and suspension alterations for the upcoming X6 SAC.

The new X5 is known as the "deceptive" car because although the evolutionary phase the design remains a strong evolution of the current X5 with "current" BMW overtones to define the muscular look of the new X5 - The new car is actually longer and wider than the current car but the evolutionary appearence makes the car look smaller - Which is a neat trick to avoid it looking van-like. A 3rd row of seats are optional but be under no illusion like its rivals claim that the 3rd row of seats are intended for full grown adults when they are actually more adequate for children.

Knowing fullwell that the new X5 is coming orders and interest are starting to flow especially in Germany where customers have decided to be patient rather than defect to Audi ,VW , Porsche, Volvo or Mercedes-Benz - a similar case of history repeating itself when the first generation X5 was shown in 1999.

When introduced The X5 was the first model to expand BMW's core business. "Build the right product , advertise it well and they will sell in droves"- it's popularity and the fact that it is fantastic to drive are two of the reasons on why the car has been successful for BMW. It has ruled its segment ever since introduction.

The current car still has strong waiting lists especially in countries such as the UK and Asia.

Of course when originally introduced the rivals the current X5 is facing now were not even a twinkle in an engineers eye. The success of the X5 and its bulldozering of the W163 M-klasse sent Mercedes-Benz back to the drawing board on the W164 which is what the X5 is setting out to beat - although BMW engineers examined the X5's rivals from a competitors point of view there was only one Benchmark: The E53 X5. The car the new X5 has to beat.

Expanding the appeal of this particular segment The new model is intent on keeping its core heritage. With the X5 BMW has never looked back and has no intentions to do so when the new model makes it's appearence this July.

Like History repeating itself BMW are intent on showing their rivals - Born from the success of the current X5 that the new X5 will indeed again "Change the rules"

Not all that different from the old X5, but the strip tailights are cool looking. Can't wait to see the headlights, that's what I'm worried about.

From what I have been told they would be a close variation of a FL 7er's headlights. Something very similar in shape - but w/o eyebrows!.

Tail-lights look very cool, which I'm relieved to see after some of the awful PS images we've been exposed to.

Holding my breath on those headlights. The current X5 has worn the facelift quite well and has the perfect blend of BMW and truck vibe. I suppose it'll be an easy act to follow if the designers aren't in a disruptive mood.

Truck? More like 5er touring on roids.:D

Praise the good Lord for the extinction of the "eyebrows" idea, if anything didn't penetrate BMW designers design philosiphy, I'm glad this did. Eyebrows made for an unkempt look, the last association BMW designers would ever like to be associated w/ their work.

I disagree. Shortly after the debut of the E65 7er eyebrows became the item du jour of headlight design, and spread just as quickly as the scalloped headlight look in the late 90s. ( Scion tC, Buick Rendezvous, Toyota RAV4, Audi Q7 )

The 'brows have become such a common sighting on new vehicles it's probably right that the X5 go without 'em.

I disagree that the eyeborows made for an unkempt look.

E65 and E60 brought eyebrows back into carland in the most overt and violent way possible, drawing universal hatred - but eventually... lots of imitators.

I don't have insider knowledge to prove it, but I feel secure claiming that the prominence of todays "eyebrow look" is of BMW's making. Like the E46 era's scalloped headlights, what was at one moment a BMW signiture look became a much imitated design cliche.

This is it ... E70. Pure evolution. Like it was said many times before ... Just a bigger E53 in flame surfaced clothing ...
