S-Class (W140) Modern classics: the S-Class Saloons of the Mercedes-Benz 140 series (1991 to 1998)


The Mercedes-Benz W140 is the third generation S-Class. Body styles: sedan/pullman (W140/VV140) and coupé (C140), with two wheelbase lengths (SE and SEL). It is succeeded by the S-Class (W220/C215). Production: April 1991 – September 1998 (sedan), October 1992 – September 1998 (coupé).

I honestly do not think todays suspension in the S-class can really match the driving comfort, yes it will be 100% more dynamic I know but not that comfortable.
 
It would be interesting to see how the landscape would have been if there was no economic crisis in the late eighties,early nineties.
Would all these then cancelled cars still live on today in current times?
Cars like the BMW 5er Coupe and Cabrio , BMW M8 and the 16 Cylinder Mercedes-Benz and BMW equivalent. Which then R&D chief Wolfgang Reitzle envisioned a model above the 7er with this engine.
Meetings would end with the usual Oh Mein Gott! You are Serious?

Could've sworn this was a Mercedes W140 thread... :whistle:

MB did have a me too reaction to the M70 V12 with the launch of the 600SEL. Smoothness was a huge factor and its was the begining of exclusivity based on engine selection. Seeing a V12 badge was a big deal back in the day.

I think all of us would have been in awe if these cars were introduced, BMW M8 and 16 cylinder BMW and Mercedes models were the stuff of dreams. I still remember the late 80's when the BMW 750iL V12 was launched everyone I know of that was a car enthusiast was literally amazed and in shock that this engine was launched. Then there was spy shots and mention of a Mercedes V12 and that was another big talking point. The BMW M8 would have been a sensational car if it was launched in 1990 with 550PS (405kW), it would have been the most powerful production car in the world.
