S-Class W116 Modern Classics: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class of the 116 series (1972 to 1980)

The Mercedes-Benz W116 is a series of flagship luxury sedans produced from September 1972 until 1980. The W116 automobiles were the first Mercedes-Benz models to be officially called S-Class, although some earlier sedan models had already been designated unofficially with the letter S for "special class" (German: "Sonderklasse"). The W116 was selected as European Car of the Year in 1974.
That front looks so timeless, love the wide grill, low bonnet line and rectangular front lights with orange indicator housings.

Yes, indeed Rolf. And see how this beautiful W116 can wear non-metallic white and steel painted wheelcaps (or is it wheelhubs?) and still look great. Magnificent S-klasse...

Found this video on the net, very nice restoration done on a 450SEL 6.9.

In the sum of its' attributes, the W116 could have been considered the "best automobile in the world" upon its' introduction in the fall of 1972. Unlike its' W108 predecessor (although a good car), it was truly a technological "tour de force" that highlighted so many innovations during its' 7 year model run. It was very appropriately succeeded by the W126. Another epic automobile. I have always been of the impression that the W116 and W126 (until 1987 and the introduction of BMWs' E32 7er) stood head-and-shoulders above their competition. Afterwards and up to current times, competitors became increasingly attractive.

Probably the most outrageous and fastest W116 in the world. A magnificent M120 V12 powered 600SE. Yes that is no joke.

How cool ! And in SWB SE guise, no less. From my approximate neck of the woods too (SE=Bad Segeberg, just north of Hamburg).

Great flashback german video from 1978 showing the safety benefits of the new ABS braking system on the W116 S class and its arch nemesis E23 7 series

Very nice 1977 350SEL, probably one of the rarer versions of the W116.

I was genuinely upset when they destroyed a W116 in For Your...
I wanted to throw Roger Moore off that cliff also. Man after I saw that scene I lost a little respect for him as the W116 was such a stunning car, why destroy it?

Yeah, the W116 looked stunning in the movie. Did you notice that Bond shoots the rear windshield and the bullet scratches the window? I'm no gun expert, but I'm pretty sure that's impossible to happen in real life.

According to IMCDB, it was an early spec 280 SE W116.

And the W116 that gets kicked off the cliff had no engine, otherwise 54 year old Roger Moore wouldn't have been able to kick it off the cliff.

Stupid Locque... Should have worn his seatbelt.

That is a fantastic review from Thomas. What a beautiful car in perfect colour and spec and great engine. The 350SE was such a charismatic car with one of the smallest V8 engines in the world at the time that punched far more than its meager capacity would suggest and delivered performance levels on par with many 6ltr or bigger engines in big heavy American cars.
