S-Class (W140/C140) Modern classics: the S-Class Saloons of the Mercedes-Benz 140 series (1991 to 1998)

The Mercedes-Benz W140 is a series of flagship vehicles manufactured by Mercedes-Benz from 1991 to 1998 in sedan/pullman (W140/VV140) and coupé (C140) body styles and two wheelbase lengths (SE and SEL). The first generation CL-Class was the sleek but hard-lined and redesigned W140-chassis (internally known as C140) coupé of 1992–1999. Succeeded by the S-Class (W220/C215). Production: April 1991 – September 1998 (sedan), October 1992 – September 1998 (coupé).

Definitely worth watching if you have a spare 25 minutes

I was a kid in the ultimate candy store recently. A Time Machine to a day when mb built to a standard not a price. The zebrano wood, gathered leather door panels, Bose beta system, hydraulic wiper, reverse gear backup posts, lovely analog dials, deep pile carpet, headlight wipers, dual pane glass etc brought back the warm and fuzzies from our facelift 420. It would be hard to imagine getting that feeling in a mass production car at this point. Pity the owner won’t let me drive it, told him I’d wash it for him instead 😂 Nice to have some folks around who get the passion. A great condition 140 vs a 126, if I could only choose one I’d grab a silver 560SEC with gray interior. Even a 91 560SEL vs An 99 s500. Nonetheless a legend.

This was probably the toughest time for the W140 in 1994 when the brilliant first gen aluminium A8 4.2 and E38 BMW 740i came out. The best time for German luxury saloons in my opinion when they were so closely matched and each having their own strengths and weaknesses.

The best thing of the W140 was its unrivaled space, supreme comfort and bank vault quiet cabin and unrivaled material and build quality. The weakness was its massive weight which made the car not as sharp as the lighter Audi and BMW and also made it use much more fuel. If it wasnt for the high price then it could have won this test.

Someone on Facebook published these interesting details of possible V16, V18 and W18 8.0 litre engines as well as W140 testing mules.

Mercedes-Benz 800 SEL 8.0 18-cylinder

8.0 V16 M160 - 540 PS
8.0 W18 M216 SOHC - 490 PS
8.0 W18 M216 DOHC - 690 PS

It was the late 1980s and car makers had no intention of downsizing whatsoever. They were actually trying the opposite. Mercedes-Benz was pushing it. A monstrous W16 was in the cards for a future Mercedes-Benz 800 SEL. But what is the mystery story of the engine that was never actually built?

A stillborn plan. A dead end. A cul-de-sac. The W16 the Mercedes-Benz engineers were going the distance for was, in fact, an elongated V12. It would find room under the hood of a hypothetical 800 SEL. The Stuttgart-based company had it all planned in response of all-time rival BMW testing a 7-Series E32 mule with a w16. It went by the name of Goldfisch and got Mercedes all flustered.

Unofficial sources claim that 85 such prototypes, all wearing the W16 heart, saw the light of day. They all turned out to be worthless. Never has anyone ever heard how that colossal engine sounded like. Climate protection concerns were rising. Key markets such as Europe and North America were pressing for ever-stricter emission regulations. Mercedes was afraid of a possible message got all wrong. So executives cancelled the 800 SEL project. The company already had the 6.0-liter V12 underway. A prestigious power plant that turned out to be a major hit.

They dropped the idea of a possible V18 M 216 engine with two banks of nine cylinders. They went instead for a more compact W layout with three banks of six cylinders, derived from the 2.6-liter units that, at that time, powered the W124 and the W201 sedans and later on, the R129 SL. Simple mathematics shows that the displacements would have been massive: nearly 8.0 liters.

The company’s archives still hide the projects drawn by hand.

Very obviously a Japanese-spec S600. Speaking of which, I think Japan was the only country where the W140 was available with Satellite Navigation.
