S-Class (W126) Modern classics: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class of the W 126 series

The Mercedes-Benz W126 is a series of passenger cars made by Daimler-Benz AG. It was marketed as the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and manufactured in sedan/saloon (1979–1991) as well as coupé (1981–1990) models, succeeding the company's W116 range. Mercedes-Benz introduced the 2-door C126 coupé model, marketed as the SEC, in September 1981. This generation was the first S-Class to have separate chassis codes for standard and long wheelbases (W126 and V126) and for coupé (C126).
That is a great video @Rezident thanks it was highly interesting. Its amazing how much detail they took in development of that car, most impressive is the suspension testing and using colored air and lights for the HVAC flow testing. Even the crash testing and wind tunnel testing was amazing to see.

Other nice things in the video they had the newer aluminum V8 on one chain and tackle linked up on a balance with the older V8 from W116 to illustrate how much lighter the newer V8 was. The four speed auto looked so small and simple when it is compared to the latest 9G-tronic.

Very interesting pics I found of a unique conversion done to the W126 in the 1980's by SGS. They lengthened and widened the standard W126 to create an uber S-class called the SGS Royale.

It was 20cm wider than a normal S-class (2.02m vs 1.82m) and was 5.50m long (about 34cm longer than the standard long wheelbase SEL version).

Thanks @Mick Briesgau I love these older videos, the music certainly has that 70's tempo with the guitar etc. :nopity::t-upside:Amazing 818th cars were built, it is so much more than any other luxury car ever built. The W222 S-class could be the second best selling S-class of all time the ways its notching up really good sales figures. I reckon it must be close on 200th units sold in nearly 3 years of production.

Thanks Reiner (@rs271) that S-class T-model must be the ultimate family car, it has a huge boot. It looks like they took the rear of the S124 and joined to the front of the W126, but its price is enough to buy a new AMG C43!

Remember Rolf, the 818.036 cars were sold in a 12 years production span. I wouldn't be surprised the W222 is produced close to 300.000 units by now (don't know for sure) but if so and if it's production span will be more than 7 years, it'll come very close.

I have a strong feeling that the S W126 will still look contemporary in 2080 also. That is how properly designed this car was. A mint W126 SEL can stand next to W222 and still get more attention from onlookers like myself. Where as W222 front end design is a bit too plain, the W126 left nothing to desire for IMO.

You right Mick the W222 is selling really well, I did a check and it sold 100,000 units from July 2013 till Sep 2014 and then in 2015 it sold 106,000 units so it could be very close to 300th units now.

That's a very nice SEC Mick, I think that gold colour was one of the most popular on that car and it emphasized the good looks even more.

Yes Rolf, as you can see the 1st series in a very good condition. It had white clignoteurs at the front, which weren't standard in those days. I don't know if it was an option back then.

That Royale was a fixed asset in the garages of the world dictators throughout the 1980's, hehe...Had everything they needed, minus a button to launch missiles to other countries :D

Another great video of the introduction of the W126 in 1979 in German.

I’m almost sure that the man who’s leading/hosting through the video is the German actor Horst Naumann.
