S-Class (W126) Modern classics: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class of the W 126 series

The Mercedes-Benz W126 is a series of passenger cars made by Daimler-Benz AG. It was marketed as the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and manufactured in sedan/saloon (1979–1991) as well as coupé (1981–1990) models, succeeding the company's W116 range. Mercedes-Benz introduced the 2-door C126 coupé model, marketed as the SEC, in September 1981. This generation was the first S-Class to have separate chassis codes for standard and long wheelbases (W126 and V126) and for coupé (C126).
It would be great if Mercedes stylists would bring out a concept future S-class with retro styling features of the W126 such as the upright grill and headlights.

The W126 actually looked good as an extended limousine ....I think it works better than the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman

It made me think about this classic scene from Coming to America

Well Rob, you stired my deepest memories with that. I vividly remember watching that film along my dad, when I was a lad. At that very scene, I remember he was telling me how good and imposing those S classes were, and for he would like to buy one in some time. A couple of years passed and dad got a 280SEL W126.
Still my favourite Merc after all these years, IMHO the highest vantage point from design and engineering view, to all their relative and competitors. They were even more desiderable than Rolls.

That's a great story Gianclaudio. I always think the long wheelbase SEL models looked very sleek and stylish.

When I was a child I leafed through often the W126 prospect and dreamed to own one as adult.
Without other commitments I would look today to expand my garage by a W126 and another dreamcar of my childhood: a SL R107. :)

What dou you drive, dear Rainer?

KiwiRob, is that you?? :D

Nice cars, my friend ! E36 cabrio is the shite. Is it red?

Thanks Gianclaudio.

The E36 is a bostongreen coloured Sedan. 21 years old and still a wonderful car. I like (love) it like on the first day.

Because of the Hyunday when you have more than three kids you need IMO a Minibus.
No sevenseater Van or SUV offers enough space in the trunk to travel by car.
Van/SUV for seven passengers (kids) is absolute okay for the daily routine.
But when you have also to transport luggage for seven then you need a trailer or a Bus.
I prefer the second variant. Especially the kids are growing and then the place in the third row will more and more less. So a journey with a Bus is more comfortable for the passengers in the last row.
But this is only my personal opinion based on my experience.
:)

Great video of the W126 showing how strong its safety cage is and how it saved a family in Australia.

Really impressive. (y)

WOW, now that is what I'm talking about. Mercedes-Benz for real, engineering like no other car in the world. Shit like that is why I was drawn to them back in the 80's upon first seeing a 300E.

The 1970' and mostly 1980's models were really outstanding, their engineering and level of detail in design and safety were benchmarks among production cars, i loved their slogan at the time "Mercedes Benz - Engineered like no other car in the world" for this was very true of their models. Each car was built to a level that was beyond any conventional car at the time, they were rock solid, made from outstanding materials that lasted years without breaking, excellent reliability, world best comfort, refinement and safety. Then the engineering detail put into the body and chassis, so many innovations at that time. Look at the W126 and W124, both models went on crash diets and were much lighter than their predecessor W123/W116 models, but were still meticulously built and drove outstandingly.

Yep I agree. That is why I like having an old Mercedes around and while I like the newer Benzes they aren't exactly the same, and I don't think they could be in today's world.

Who would have predicted the price of gasoline would drop to 126 cents/liter? :)
