The W126 actually looked good as an extended limousine ....I think it works better than the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman
It made me think about this classic scene from Coming to America
That's a great story Gianclaudio. I always think the long wheelbase SEL models looked very sleek and stylish.Well Rob, you stired my deepest memories with that. I vividly remember watching that film along my dad, when I was a lad. At that very scene, I remember he was telling me how good and imposing those S classes were, and for he would like to buy one in some time. A couple of years passed and dad got a 280SEL W126.
Still my favourite Merc after all these years, IMHO the highest vantage point from design and engineering view, to all their relative and competitors. They were even more desiderable than Rolls.
When I was a child I leafed through often the W126 prospect and dreamed to own one as adult.
Without other commitments I would look today to expand my garage by a W126 and another dreamcar of my childhood: a SL R107.![]()
What dou you drive, dear Rainer?
family car a 2010 minibus Hyunday H-1.
KiwiRob, is that you??
Nice cars, my friend ! E36 cabrio is the shite. Is it red?
Great video of the W126 showing how strong its safety cage is and how it saved a family in Australia.
The 1970' and mostly 1980's models were really outstanding, their engineering and level of detail in design and safety were benchmarks among production cars, i loved their slogan at the time "Mercedes Benz - Engineered like no other car in the world" for this was very true of their models. Each car was built to a level that was beyond any conventional car at the time, they were rock solid, made from outstanding materials that lasted years without breaking, excellent reliability, world best comfort, refinement and safety. Then the engineering detail put into the body and chassis, so many innovations at that time. Look at the W126 and W124, both models went on crash diets and were much lighter than their predecessor W123/W116 models, but were still meticulously built and drove outstandingly.WOW, now that is what I'm talking about. Mercedes-Benz for real, engineering like no other car in the world. Shit like that is why I was drawn to them back in the 80's upon first seeing a 300E.

A rare option, Mercedes code 948, the pennant holder.
