Mercedes S-Class vs. BMW 7-series

As always, I used the IAA as an opportunity for quality comparisons.
Since I had not inspected the facelifted S-class up to now, it was one of my first targets.
As the pre-FL, it did not knock me off my feet, mostly due to its huge variance in finish (some parts are really great, some suck; e.g. the HUD cover ... ultra-cheap plastic, even in top-notch Maybachs).

Objectively, the 7 series is still not behind in that department. It may have less 'highs', but it also carries less 'lows'.
However, the A8 (and in part also the Panamera) steps up the game. The layout is still dull, and it is the first gen that I don't even consider to take into consideration (even though it's a great drive) but details are fantastic. I'm not sure about how well it will age though.

Even though OT, I will add a few more impressions on that quality issue because I think they can be regarded as indications of where the industry is going from here. (@mods: if considered irrelevant, feel free to edit, delete, or move this part.)

Mercedes shows its ambiguity within products (as mentioned above: S class; AMG GT, see below), but also between.

The AMG GT has some very nice unique details, like these solid knobs, but also nasty mass series production parts that, imo, compromise the overall experience quite significantly.

Also, Mercedes does not seem to have a problem to put something like this on a MY 2018 car with a 60.000€ tag.

^ Central tunnel in W213's interior made from piano black plastic sucks. It sucks because wood would be much better choice. It is huge piece of plastic, it is fingerprint magnet, will get scratched during time, and definately not as luxurious or nice as wood.

Always enjoy reading your detailed analysis of car interior @Busty

Yes, true, this particular part of the interior is a let down and leaves me wondering for over 3 years now if there wasn't a much better solution achievable. We're talking S-Klasse after all...

It intrigues me @Busty, what you consider to be the "highs" and "lows" of the 7er. Would you be so kind and share?

It is probably one of those parts where the average buyer will never notice or even touch.

Sitting in the car, you won't notice it right away. But when looking from the outside through the windscreen/front window (as shown in Busty's picture) even 'average' buyers will notice.
