GLE Mercedes ML-Class SUV – W166 (Spy pics & info)

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.
Ugh...if that's what it's gonna look like, then color me not impressed. I didn't just get done bitching about cars looking the same and "supposedly" being brand new in the A8 thread just to let off cuz this is MB. If this is it, then it shall hear (see my typing?) my wrath on the internet. LOL :D

Well going from the spy pics it looks like MB is going for evolution with this ML i like the pic of huck in terms off it looks much much more aggresive though those front lights are too small...Also i think the hood looks slightly odd.I would have really liked for the exterior to be different from the current one but it dont look to bad obviously it will be cleaned up from hucks pic but if it is hucks and going by the spy cars out then i think it will be very very close to this..On the other end i think the interior from the pics we saw is awesome looking...

The ML isn't going to be an 'impressor'. The current ML is such a collage of lines, accents, and angles, you can't tell what they are driving at.

At least this seems to settle down all the pointless shapes. It also appears to take some of the wedge out of the design. Please, please MB, stop doing this to your cars. That is fine for Honda and Nissan, but a Mercedes should be stoic. MB doens't need all this forward slanting business. MB needs a uniform design from tip to tail. That is something lacking in the new E and the current ML.

I don't see Hucks signature, so we will see.

I know a guy on another forum, who use to have Mercedes info about future proyects, and has told me that the new S-Class will have some design cues used in the new CLS. For example, the frontlights won´t be as large as on the W221, but smaller, also don´t expect to see the same neutral rearlights as on the current S-Class, but a more agressive design instead.

Yep...I believe there was an article posted awhile back that stated this.

But anyway..back to the ML...

Is it me or does anyone think the Ml is smaller then the current one..

Yes, it looks so. Which I don't like. I prefer it gain more room then loose it. Might be good weight wise, but the passengers will suffer. Unless maybe the next generation R-class will be in SUV form and sit in between the GL and ML.

yeah although the current ml is very spacious it would be dissapointing to go smaller i dont know maybe MB has some plan instore..infact i was hoping for a 7 seater ML..

guys, I don't think it is smaller. If you notice the clearance is much lower. The current ML has a large span between the tire and wheel well.
All the pictures who this one to sit much lower, and thus look smaller.

No way MB can afford to shrink the ML. if anything it needs a inch or more in the rear seat.

It definitely needs it, but do you think they will? My bet is that the dimensions of the outside of this car will shrink a bit, but interior will grow.

As the world's automakers go back to the drawing board on what they need to compete in today's market, both structurally and in terms of product, parts sharing and efficiency are increasingly becoming key concepts. The next-generation of the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class SUV could embrace both concepts with a much closer link to the next G-Class and R-Class (or their successors) as well as more forward-looking powertrains.

Due in the middle of 2011, the next-gen ML is still largely a matter of speculation. Spy shots of an early prototype reveal a smaller body than the current ML, though the wheelbase appears unchanged. We also have several shots of the interior as well.

A few reports have suggested that a diesel-electric hybrid ML-Class is in the works, although a gasoline-electric hybrid like that in the upcoming ML450 Hybrid is almost certain. A plug-in variant of the ML hybrid is even possible, featuring an 80-horsepower electric motor paired with a twin-turbocharged and direct-injected 3.5-liter V-6 and capable of travelling up to 18-miles on electric power alone is also thought to be in the works.

That plug-in hybrid system will draw on elements from the other hybrid programs within Mercedes, including the S400 powertrain. But other elements, including parts and underpinnings, will be shared more closely across the R-Class successor and G-Class vehicles to help achieve economies of scale while still maintaining separate identities. The chassis underpinning the new SUV is also the same design found in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, one of the lasting legacies from the now defunct DaimlerChrysler.

The ML’s dominant position as the consumer 4x4 of choice within Mercedes' lineup won't change, though the focus will increasingly be on efficiency rather than performance. Accordingly, European models will likely get a 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine rated at 204-horsepower. A V-6 diesel rated at 225-horsepower and a 333-horsepower V-6 gasoline engine is also thought to be in the plans. The V-8 engine will gain direct-injection and twin-turbochargers for the AMG model, which is expected to deliver at least 570-horsepower.

those pics look disturbingly smaller can some off our skilled member put a simalr pic side by side or somethinf off the current and the spy so as to see if its grown or shrinked..The rear lights look intresting i dont think theyll look like the E but you never know it seems to have two round led lights unless thats just a dummy..

Infact i think the rear light will be simmalar to the current one plus a added piece going into the tailgate..

Having seen these photos, it is still hard for me to judge the overall dimensions of the car. However, if I am to believe the rumours the W166 will be slightly shorter than the current ML(and probably more dynamic, in terms of design and on-road performance), then it is possible MB wants to reposition its mid-sized SUV as to become a competitor for the BMW X6 and to make enough room for the GL, which may, in the future, be the opponent for the X5.

I think the GL and the ML are not going to be as similar as on current gen. The GL should be more exotic in one way or another, more special.

If MB is wanting to compete with the X5, going smaller is not the key. In fact the X5 grew and even squeezed in a 3rd row. This segment is way too competitive to cut the size of a vehicle. In fact size is what drives this segment. The ML already was too narrow, and had one of the worst rear leg room in the segment. Oh, please I hope MB has not dropped the ball on this one.

The ML is an American vehicle, built for the American market. Why in the world would you subscribe to that thinking. I wa hoping to see more upright angles in the next ML in keeping with the GLK. This still has that same bulbous shape.

Americans like what they like. The Lexus RX is a full sell out, soccer mom vehicle. The X5 is sharp, and grabs with its boldness. The ML seems lost in between.
