Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

I love what I am reading here, a new Electric E-Class in 2027 and converging of 3 box design for EV and ICE. New S-class with elevated status and striking appearance with more Manufaktur options. New V8 engine, probably will be a double sized version of the new 4-cylinder in the CLA with diesel like economy. I hope through all this Mercedes-Benz will improve the quality of their interiors and not let anything slip.

One would hope that with more Manufaktur options, comes more quality.

Yikes that’s a lot. Will have to read it later. Seems like they know what needs to be done.

They seem to be doing a quick fire fighting move especially for the EV's. I hope the next gen EV E-class and S-class will be as good as the ICE versions. It looks like exciting times for Mercedes-Benz.

AMG confirms new V8 engine with mild hybrid technology

AMG wants to go back to its emotional roots – the new V8 should help

AMG analysts have presented the brand new V8 engine with mild hybrid drive. It will be used in the new CLE 63 AMG Coupé and Cabriolet, for example.

It was announced that the new V8 will not only comply with the EU7 standard, but also has a flat-plane crankshaft. This was used for the first time in the AMG GT Black Series and has the advantage that the V8 revs more readily at the top. They are not suitable for V8 engines with a large displacement (e.g. the old M156 E62 with 6.2 litres displacement).

The disadvantage, however, is the flat-plane crankshaft, which has now been confirmed to be constructed like a 4-cylinder. Flat-plane means that the crankshaft throws are all in one plane, with an angle of 180° between them.

With the AMG GT Black Series you could already tell that the typical V8 roar was gone.

During the spy tests in the Sierra Nevada, the V8 could also only be heard very subtly.

One can only speculate about the reason for this choice. They want to win back customers who are disappointed with the C 63 4-cylinder and come up with a V8 with the flat-plane crankshaft.

AMG may be forced to comply with the new EU noise regulations. However, the details are not known.

To underline the emotionality, a sound generator will also be used in the interior. This is already available in some 4-cylinder models.

This means that the V8 sound in the interior, which is required by EU law, can be subtly amplified.

Another reason for the flat-plane crankshaft could be that it requires less space due to the 180° angle (only one plane). The crankcase can be made more compact. Perhaps this was the only way to bring the V8 engine back into models that were not originally developed for the V8.

The exterior will also feature a stronger visual differentiation between the AMG entry-level models and the AMG top-performance models.

With these measures, AMG aims to significantly increase production numbers from the current 140,000 units to around 200,000 AMG models per year.

Ok I think I read most of that. Really exciting stuff. I wonder what they will do to the GLE's back seat to make it a major step up in comfort. They didn't mention the GLS, unless I missed it? I sincerely hope all those top end cars bring actual substance, unlike cars like the SL680 which should have been a V12 with ever manfaktur option in the book available. It's good read that they're doing away with the weird EV design. I think they've gotten the message. If the new CLA, C EV and GLC EV don't turn it around for them on the EV front, nothing will at this point. An E-Class EV that looks like the regular E would be a winner IMO. The current EQ models will become collectables...........................said no one. Side note, looks like Audi, Volvo and Mercedes will be launching cars right on top of each other, A6, ES90 and CLA, next month on the same days.

Should this be a relatively accurate precursor to M-B exterior design in the nearer future...

...M-B should be o.k.

Until I've seen both in reality, this and Neue Klasse are rubbish to me.
If Audi (A6) would have an interior worth its name, THAT would be ok for me.

This image excites me. Are they hinting at even more imposing front ends at the Top End?

Is that car in the draped in the grey the speculated W223 FL (draped in blue) Coupe?

Shambles? Please...it's in the same state of flux all European makers are facing.

Going by the picture you posted just above here, MB is only starting to do what BMW has been doing for literal years with their ICE and BEV designs.

I am far from impartial and missing the grander picture for MB, but to me it looks like MB is adapting to what BMW has laid out years ago.
I suppose this is because the EQ line completely flopped, but still.

It's similar, but not quite the same.
Currently BMW uses CLAR for both BEV and ICE. The architecture has been modified to allow for both electric and combustion power trains. This is why the i5 and i7 have a transmission tunnel, even though they don't need one in EV form. Because that vehicle needs that to package the combustion engines.
This is sound in principle because it means you have unified (if subjectively ugly) designs for both ICE and BEV.

Mercedes MMA takes the same approach for their commodity vehicles, for cost reasons I imagine. The CLA to be unveiled next month can accommodate both BEV and ICE power trains in the same platform and body.

The difference is at the mid to high end. Currently mercedes has EVA2 for the EQ series and MRA2 for the ICE series. The EQ cars are horribly ugly homonculi due to their aero obsession. Meanwhile the ICE cars look pretty lovely in my opinion.
Going forward from the introduction of MB.EA-L they will keep the same strategy of a dedicated BEV platform for EVs and dedicated ICE platform for ICE cars. That way both can be uncompromised in their packaging. However the big change in strategy for them is to no longer have soap bars on wheels for EVs, but instead use the same external design and shape for both BEVs and ICE/PHEV so they look the same from the outside. Underneath, they will probably use a unique platform depending on the power train choice by the customer.
So if they want and E.class EV it'll be on MB.EA-L. But if they want an E.class hybrid or combustion model, it'll be on MRA2. But either way it'll look the same.
So in essence. You pick the model you want , and then you pick the power train, and you don't have to worry about anything else.

I think BMW will probably be converging with Mercedes in the same way when NK is being introduced. At least for the new 3-series to begin with. BEV will be NK, but the ICE 3er will probably remain in CLAR, but they'll have similar outward appearances.

So...

1er/A class: BMW only ICE, MB ICE/BEV shared platform

3er/C class: BMW separate BEV and ICE platform, MB too

5er/E class: BMW ICE/BEV platform, MB separate BEV and ICE

7er/S class: BMW ICE/BEV platform, MB separate BEV and ICE

X1/GLA: ICE/BEV for both (?)

X3/GLC: BMW separate BEV and ICE, MB ICE/BEV

X5/7 GLE/S: BMW ICE/BEV platform, MB (?)

Likely the same exterior design theme. But probably not identical because both platforms will actually be different from each other due to obvious reasons. You can already see the same for the NK 3er vs the CLAR 3er; same theme, different proportions.

I think so.

I think the A class will probably be binned in EV format in favour of the GLA. But the standard ICE A class will be extended for a while I think?

C/GLC and eGLC/eC will be separate too. The mules are already out and about. Both the EV GLC and C are on MB.EA-M.

The rest of them is probably in flux to some degree, until we start seeing the mules. Things will crystallise over the next 18 months or so methinks.

I think the biggest differences will probably be in interior packaging. Transmission tunnel and drunk/trunk storage etc. maybe the EVs might be a bit taller? But it depends on how they package the battery.

Longer wheelbase for the EV, with shorter overhangs. Shorter hood for the EV too for lack of an engine.

And for the interior like you say. Flat floor, more space.

They say they want to keep the 3 box design for style, so maybe won't be changed in proportion completely, but yeah.
