Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

Its amazing watching the EU kill it’s industry from within
To be honest, this just reads like Mercedes applying a bit of corporate spin to the lack of demand for their 4 cylinder AMG engine, and binning it off. If they're replacing them with an inline 6, its not exactly anything to do with the motor being too noisy. Just that Mercedes doesn't want to spend the money to make it compliant.

Not like a farty turbo 4 cylinder sounds particularly good anyway.

  • AMG has got its hands on Mercedes’ smallest electric SUV, the GLA.
  • The next GLA will be available with both electric and hybrid engines.
  • Top-spec AMG versions could get a tri-motor setup and around 500 hp.
We’ve spilled a lot of pixels this year talking about AMG’s upcoming electric heavy hitters, its flagship SUV and Porsche Taycan-rivalling four-door GT. But behind the scenes, Mercedes’ hot rod division has been just as busy at the other end of the scale, turning up the wick on the new GLA EQ.

Built from the same basic platform and running gear as the new CLA sedan, CLA shooting brake, and soon-to-be-released GLB, next year’s GLA will be available in both hybrid and electric forms, and as an AMG, as these fresh spy shots confirm.

Taken outside Mercedes’ R&D center close to the Nurburgring, they give us our first look at AMG’s remix of the regular GLA with EQ Technology, which we last snapped back in August.

Compared with that vanilla GLA, this one has bigger AMG-specific forged alloy wheels and a beefy set of monobloc brake calipers behind the front rims to help rein in what could be a huge power output.

Hardware and Horsepower

Though exact tech details are unconfirmed, we expect non-AMG GLAs to get the same dual-motor setup and all-wheel drive system as the CLA sedan.

That would mean 349 hp (354 PS / 260 kW) and 380 lb-ft (515 Nm) of torque. We’re likely to see an 85 kWh battery pack and a DC fast charging capability of up to 320 kW.

AMG GLA EQs due to hit showrooms in 2027 will also follow the template laid down by their sedan cousins, and it has been reported that the CLA 45 could deliver upwards of 500 hp (507 PS / 373 kW).

What’s even more intriguing is the same intel says the power will come via three electric motors to give the AMG models advanced torque vectoring capabilities and a drift mode.

Like the company’s upcoming super-GT, which was previewed by the GT XX concept, the little AMGs are in line to receive compact, lightweight motors from Britain’s Yasa, which is now owned by Mercedes.

Yasa recently boasted about one of its tiny 12.7 kg (28 lb) motors generating a peak of 1,006 hp (1,020 PS / 750 kW) during testing, setting a world record for power density.

Some news on the withdrawal of all 4-cylinder AMG cars. YAY this is fantastic news!!

Mercedes-AMG 4-cylinder engines are too loud for EU standard

Mercedes-AMG withdraws numerous 4-cylinder engines from the range
From 01.07.2026, the exterior noise regulation Phase 3 UN-R51.03 will come into force in the EU.
While Mercedes-AMG complies with the new noise standard with the R6 and V8 engines or adapts it to this standard, this is apparently no longer worthwhile for the 4-cylinder engines.
The following models will therefore be discontinued in 2026:

ModelEnd of production
GLA 35 AMG 4matic3rd week February 2026
GLC 43 AMG 4matic3rd week February 2026
GLC 43 AMG 4matic Coupé3rd week February 2026
GLC 63 S E Performance AMG 4matic+3rd week May 2026
GLC 63 S E Performance AMG 4matic+ Coupé3rd week May 2026
C 43 AMG 4matic3rdweek February 2026
C 43 AMG 4matic Estate3rd week February 2026
C 63 S E Performance AMG 4matic+3rd week May 2026
C 63 S E Performance AMG 4matic+ Estate3rd week May 2026

The successor to the GLA 35 AMG 4matic will probably come in mid-2027. The GLA 45 S EQ 4matic+ will deliver over 544 hp and drive purely electrically. The GLA mild-hybrid versions will no longer get an AMG version.

However, it is interesting to note that the GLA 45 S AMG 4matic+ (H247), unlike the GLA 35 AMG 4matic, may continue to be produced.

In the C-Class (43 and 63, both with the M139 4-cylinder), the two 4-cylinder AMG models will be replaced by an M256M R6 petrol engine with the facelift in autumn 2026. It will then be called the C 53 AMG 4matic. Thus, there is no really long gap here either.

In the GLC, the GLC EQ will receive an AMG version. It is to receive almost 1,000 hp. The X254 series will receive a facelift in 2027. It is not yet clear which new AMG engine will replace the two 4-cylinders (43 and 63).

The noise reason is bollocks.

I asked my dealer about that. They simply didn’t sell and next year the successors will arrive.

I think it's impossible to make a 600 hp 4 pot (or whatever power rating these AMGs have) compliant with extremes.

The problem is the cooling, with the current layout 500HP is the limit, If it should work in the Emirates, Outback and 50°C and so on.

In the winter even higher horsepower numbers are possible. (550hp I guess)

I read that the new GR Yaris based 4 banger will have 600hp .

There's no reason Mercedes wouldn't be able to do that. They just choose not to, I guess for consistency purposes, and of course now because nobody wants to buy it.

Someone dyno'd a GR Corolla, and it was not putting anywhere near the claimed power down to the wheels, where an A45s absolutely would be.

Though I have no doubt Toyota could make an absolutely insane turbo 4 cylinder, given that they did make the 2JZ once upon a time.

I guess with a new head with improved cooling and with much more revs 600hp are possible.

But TBH people expect at least a I6 in this class, which sounds much better.

Even the die hard AMG Fan will rather buy a M3 than a C63SE.

The G20E would be "capable" of 600hp "with a bigger Turbo", that's not the same as "it will have" 600hp.

FWD based AWD cars often have certain methods by which they have to be dyno'd because of how and when they deploy the torque front to rear. If you do it wrong you'll get inaccurate results, and if you do it wrong enough you can either damage the car or trigger a limp mode or reduced power mode. The Corolla's output is fine when it's dyno'd properly by people that know what they're doing.
