Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

There is room for Mercedes to innovate above the S-Class.

I don't know, those who buy Porsche or Bentley won't buy any MB except the S or G.
Its because Mercedes makes many cheap cars with similar interior as the expensive versions, a GLS Maybach is the same car as a GLE just more leather inside so its not special enough like a Range Rover.

When I drove a Conti GT it felt its something special even if its a Panamera platform and tech.

Mercedes could do it, if they made a car with that degree of bespoke-ness.
The G and S are beloved by many a rich person already. If they made the Maybach trims more bespoke and unique, I'm sure people would go for it.

The new AMG GT coupe already has a lot of the S coupes virtues combined with the more dynamic elements you speak of. The refinement is top notch, bar some wind rustle around the mirrors, and the ride is actually very very well judged. It also tracks supremely on the freeway.

The AMG GT is too much of a sports car and is in a different league altogether.
In overall finish and exquisite detail, it is not comparable to the S-Coupe or Bentley Continental when it comes to refinement.
The GT has too much of an edge. Those wanting something more polished with GT-like performance in a true 2+2 package would not consider it.

The Conti is very fast, and athletic, but it's not a sports car.
The C217 if anything just needed to be taughtened up a little bit, whilst maintaining it's perfect rise quality.

But yeah the new AMG GT is basically already the half-sport/half-GT. If the S coupe is to be reduced: AMG or not, it needs to be more GT than sports car.

I never said the Bentley Continental GT is a sports car. This is not its aim. It is one of the best and most successful grand tourers
out there with the sales to prove it. It is still the most popular model after the Bentayga, a rare feat considering it is a 2-door coupe in this day and age.
The C217 does not need to be toughed up, it needs to be replaced with something more special. An AMG product would work, but like the SL,
dialed back from its "ultra" sporty nature.

Oh I agree with you completely. I'm just conveying how I felt MB has positioned the new GT. The new GT is on another level to the old one in terms of comfort, refinement and everyday usability and practicality and may just satisfy some S class buyers. For others it will obviously be too sporty still.

This is also what the product manager at AMG here was told to convey anyone enquiring on S coupes. And yet he knows nothing about the W223 Coupe rumours and spy shots...

But I do think we are getting a chopped W223. Its not an ideal outcome but it would be relatively low cost in terms of R&D. Alongside the AMG GT they would have a very wide coverage of the market.

I also think they're hoping wilder variants of the GT should satisfy sports car purists, but I doubt that will be the case. Uness they have a massive weight loss program or some genuinely ingenious engineering and tuning. The car is big and heavy.

I really wish this notion about the GT being a replacement or substitute for the S Coupe would just die. It’s the worst misinformation possible.

M

Agreed. its no S Coupe. But it's the most refined high end Coupe from Mercedes for now, and its offering a range of comfort and refinement missing from the previous GT. That will be enough for some.

Try to arrange a drive of one mate.

I hope now this whole EV shake up has happened MB incorporates more aspirtional vehicles and coupes back in to the line up. Wishfull thinking I know, but we had it so good last generation with a plethora of coupes, convertibles and their AMG variants.

I want to see MB/Maybach quality like this again. Less temp plastic and ambient lighting galore.

This would be a dream, but Mercedes is already going back to cost cutting and this level of quality is well beyond too expensive for them. The 57/62 were solid hunks of mega luxury cars with amazing interior detailing.

Drove on of these in my young days went from my dads s500 to this and this car was in another world

Time for Mercedes to dos something like this now the market now is ready for it

That time nobody new Maybach and also the world has changed

People now ready to throw heavy money on cars

Put in the full effort this will be a winner

They will probably give us in EV version lol

Looks very narrow and tall ? Actually looks smaller to me

Is this a special electric or is it mixed electric and engine ?

Automotive media outlets speculate some 4850mm in overall length and approx. 1900mm in width w/o rearview mirrors. So, a bit larger than the upcoming MMA CLA sedans.

The MB.EA platform is said to be dedicated BEV ONLY. However, I would not be surprised were M-B feverishly working in order to find ways of incorporating a complementary ICE Hybrid/EREV version as well. Similar to the modus operandi that SMART is now taking with its new #5 model. Perhaps somehow incorporating some sort of compact front subframe that could accomodate a very compact ICE ? But hey...I'm no engineer, so what do I know anyhow...

So will their be a separate ICE coming or extended face lifts ?

Just as with BMW, a separate BEV model and a separate ICE model.
The W206 will be extended until not allowed to be sold anymore, is my guess. Maybe two or more facelifts left in the pipeline for the next 10 years.

We won't ever see a brand new ICE again from the Germans in the mainstream model lineup.

Are BMW not launching a NEW 3 series ?
