Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series Will Boast 670 Horsepower

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

It looks like an all out sports car, not a GT, hopefully the engine and driveline will reflect that. In other words, please no V12 and 5 speed slush box.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

Yeah that is what hope it is too. The V12 and old 5-speed would be a huge letdown.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

Well, consensus seems to be that there will be a V12, a 680 hp v12, to be precise. Also, magazines are quoting a surprisingly official sounding 573 pounds of weight reduction compared to the normal SL65, which means the Black Series will end up weighing around 3,850 lbs. This could make it, at least in theory, quicker than the SLR 722.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

Hi @all
this one was real fast i just returned yesterday and the pictures of my test drive have already been spreaded in the net...
I saw the photograph when i left the petrol station.. but so what could i do? I decided to drive on normally and so he could follow me easily... but to think he could overtake and get some more pictures of the front with his Passat was really silly ;-)

Is this the best quality available or are there even better photos from march?
Where can I get the Videos someone talked about?

Mighty Merc SL Black Series spied

Spy shots reveal Mercedes’ stunning new flagship out high speed testing.

Check out the fastest, most powerful, most exclusive road car Mercedes has ever built – the SL65 AMG Black Series.

While official pictures are not yet available, early indications and these amazing spy shots make it obvious that this is one very special supercar.

Powered by a tuned evolution of the 6.0-litre turbocharged V12 available in the SL600, the SL65 AMG Black Series produces around 660bhp and 1000Nm of torque. Top Speed is expected to be 200mph - a first for any AMG product - while the 0-60mph sprint is likely to take less than 4.0-seconds.

To make the most of this performance, AMG engineers have completely reinvented the SL's chassis, suspension and bodywork to ensure the car offers handling to match it's awesome pace.

Fully adjustable suspension, ceramic brakes and a lightweight, race inspired interior are just some of the tantalising features tipped to complete the package - as is bespoke carbon fibre bodywork.

As a result the SL65 looks astonishing lapping the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The car is at least eight inches wider than standard, and gets flared wheel arches to cover huge, magnesium alloy wheels. To help cool the engine, there are huge vents cut into the bonnet and front wings, as well as an ultra wide front grille.

Perhaps the most radical change, however, is that the car is no longer even a coupé cabriolet. To ensure the chassis is ultra stiff, engineers have added a substantial roll cage, which is now cloaked in a one piece carbon fibre roof. This new roof not only saves weight, but also improves the aerodynamics too, as the lid has been reprofiled and stretches further over the rear of the car than before.

To add to the aerodynamic package, the SL also gets a moveable rear wing plus huge venturi tunnels underneath the car which promise to aid stability at speed.

Mercedes has yet to announce the cost of the car, yet as the newcomer is likely to exceed the performance of the £300,000 SLR, its also likely to exceed its price.

Are those rears on the air?

One thing for sure it'll never be more expensive than the SLR,that article is a bit exaggerating it.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

It's going to be around £200,000 I'd imagine though!

I am afraid there is not much exageration here. The base car is $200k to begin with. This does not appear a simple tuning and body kit job. The chasis and body appear to have been significantly reworked, and with far more expensive material. Though the sum of all parts may not necessarily support a circa-$400k price, the accounting department will. This model appears to be a bit more to the SL 65 than the CLK Black Series is to the regular CLK 63.

Now that we know somewhat more about the engine, I am curious about the transmission. Could there be a Veyron-like double-clutch under there, perhaps sourced by Ricardo or Getrag? The double-clutch did not make it to the SL 63, because the retunneling was far too expensive, but expense appears well amotizable here with all the other re-engineered components. The MCT may well be a stop-gap (a fad) just like it was the case with the sequential transmission that appeared in the very first SL 350 (R230) around 2003.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

Still i don't think it'll ever be more expensive than MB's most expensive road legal curently on sale the SLR,the price will be between 300-350K i guess, lets wait and see.

A Veyron type of transmission will not aid in weight reduction as it's too heavy and too expensive and i can't see them putting such an expensive trans in a SL and not in the SLR.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

I think it will rock an enhanced, reinforced version of the MCT.
As far as the SLR is concerned, it's an old story by now, and won't have extensive mods. Daimler gave up. it's an image-carrier, a spectacular body, but the real racer will (I hope) this SL BS, and the future SLC.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

The SLR is monstrously expensive. I suspect this ride whip to sell for around 250-280k, i.e same price region as the LP640 and 599GTB.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

Hotter that hell!
The ears on the front fenders are a little extreme I think.. Hard to believe thay are using the V12 with this beast...

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

I am amazed at the "shock" all of you are having at the use of the V12. I recommend you do not think of this engine as the one in the S65 limo, but rather as the engine Pagani is on his knees begging MB for use in the Zonda. The engine will have such a different character (same torque, much more power, higher revolutions per minute=a screamer). And, it will be saddled with the lightest weight its "civilian" sibbling was ever forced to haul (circa 3,900lbs vs. 4,450lbs in the SL65).

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

The 65 engine makes its power between 4800-5100rpms and redlines at 5950 rpms - hardly a screamer for a supercar; it's almost diesel-like. Though in a lighter car, the performance potential will be tremendous.

FWIW, I personally think the old 7.3 N/A V12 with 750bhp is a much better suited engine for the Zonda. It has a more natural torque curve and with a high redline, can take advantage of quicker gearing making the most of the engine's broad torque spread.

For the SL Black Series - whatever engine it is, it is definitely turbocharged, and if its an SL65 BS - then more likely than not, its packing the 65 V12 given the huge cost in developing a new engine. It'll be interesting to see whether the wider track, rear spoiler, venturi tunnels and that 65 engine combined in a 1700-1800kgs package can ruffle some Porsche feathers on the Nurburgring...

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

IMO the problem with the 65 engine is too much torque for a non AWD application. Also the lack of a non sporty transmission to handle all that torque.

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

How wide are those tires in the rear?! They look like 11 inchers!

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

love it but the rear spoiler has to go!

Re: Mercedes SL Black Series (Spy pics & info)

Look at those front fenders, they look like the CLK-GTR or a DTM car! I can't imagine this thing in red or white when we officially see it! Sick isn't the word.
