Mercedes S Class, EQS launches on track despite virus pandemic

The EQS concept is expected to come to market next year as a zero-emissions sibling to the S Class.

Mercedes-Benz says the launches of the new Mercedes-Benz S Class and its full-electric sibling, the EQS, are on track despite the coronavirus pandemic that forced the automaker to introduce home working and temporarily close factories.

The two upper-premium sedans are "absolutely crucial for the future" of parent Daimler and the cars have "top priority," Mercedes-Benz production manager Jörg Burzer told Automobilwoche, a sister publication of Automotive News Europe.

Burzer said the launch schedule for the models is on track without naming an exact date for their sales introduction. Reports in the German press say the S Class will be available to order in Europe from September with deliveries starting in November.

The EQS is expected to go on sale next year as a Tesla Model S rival.

Burzer said the S Class is the automaker's most important model for helping to develop new technology and a vital profit generator for the company.

The S Class is expected to offer advanced autonomous driving functions, over-the-air updates and new connectivity capabilities.

The Mercedes Vision EQS concept was unveiled at the 2018 Frankfurt auto show.
