S-Class W222 Mercedes-Benz S 600 (V222)

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class produced from 2013 to 2020, serving as the successor to the W221 S-Class and predecessor to the W223 S-Class. The W222 has a similar design theme to the C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W213).
Mercedes S-Class Maybach Details Officially Revealed

A spy photo of the Mercedes S-Class Maybach was taken while it was being tested.

Word had been going around for quite some time now about the planned resurrection of the Maybach name. However, the brand will be demoted as a mere variant of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class this time. According to the people within the company, the Mercedes S-Class Maybach will have more luxurious features than the top-of-the-line S600 variant and S65 models.

Citing Gorden Wagener as a source of information, Car and Driver revealed the specifications of the upcoming Mercedes S-Class Maybach. The source claimed the length of the new car under the sub-brand will be around 5.5 meters or approximately 18 feet.

The head of Mercedes’ global design explained that plenty of developments were made in the C-pillar of the car to improve its proportions. However, he said it will still retain the significant features of the S-Class.

The report stated the Mercedes S-Class Maybach would likely have a turbocharged V12 engine under its hood. So, expect a lot of power from the car. It should be noted too that power will likely come from the rear wheels of the car.

Then, it would have a fully-reclining seat, plus Maybach badges. In addition to that, it will be equipped with the Magic Body Control suspension to ensure the highest level of comfort to its occupants.

The news source mentioned the Mercedes S-Class Maybach will likely be officially introduced next month. The official unveiling will take place at the L.A. Auto Show.

I'm really doubting their strategy with the Maybach brand again. The reason it failed the first time around was because the brand wasn't 'bespoke' enough to contend with the RR's and Bentley's of the world. Bringing the nameplate back and making it a derivative of the W222 seems like a bad idea.

I'm assuming this thing is going to cost upwards or USD $ 300,000. At this price point, you can't have your car looking like a run-of-the-mill S-class.

^ Doubt is good. Seems to me the plan is to position AMG and Maybach in a similar way, as AMG appears to be quite succesfull in the S-Class space with their focus on sportiness. Thus the lineup in the USA might comprise the Mercedes-Benz S 550 and S 600 models, the sportier Mercedes-AMG S 63 and S 65, in addition to the new more spacious Mercedes-Maybach S 600 and S 65 exploring ultimate luxury haute couture, perhaps successfully, or perhaps a disaster waiting in the wings?

Mercedes-Benz confirms Maybach name and next month debut for extra-long S-Class

Will be 5.5 meters long

A Mercedes-Benz official has confirmed the extra-long S-Class will be unveiled next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show with the "Maybach" moniker.

Mercedes-Benz is currently offering the S-Class Sedan in standard (5116mm long / 3035mm wheelbase) and long wheelbase (5246mm long / 3165mm wheelbase) versions but pretty soon an extra-long version will be added to the range and will resurrect the Maybach moniker. Talking to Car & Driver, Mercedes-Benz's head of global design Gordon Wagener said the car will be about 5500mm long so the extra 254mm will mostly go into the wheelbase.

Wagener described the S-Class Maybach as being the automotive representation of "haute couture" and he also announced "Maybach" will become a sub-brand of the company in the same vein as AMG. This means future extra luxurious versions of Mercedes-Benz models will be commercialized with the Maybach name, with the next car likely being a higher-specification GL. Further down the line, the S-Class Coupe and/or Convertible could receive the same treatment.

Unlike last time, they are calling the car for what it is: a special version of the model line. Back in 2002, they hyped it as a whole new Model with the chassis of the last generation S Class. So I don't share your doubts but think finally Mercedes have a very coherent and cohesive strategy with Maybach. It is their luxury version of AMG. Keep in mund AMG did not get to develop its own beside cars until decades after effectively being a trim level for regular models.

So correct, why make it look like an S class that had a couple of inches stuffed in the middle. If I could afford this type of car I would want people to know it. As you said it failed the first time and I can't see it succeeding the second time with an even less modified and visually different vehicle.

Mind the hyphen: Revived Mercedes ultraluxury line to be called Mercedes-Maybach
It'll change Mercedes into three distinct brands.

After spying a wild, mysterious Mercedes concept car last week, one theory floated around the office was that we were looking at the profile of the new Maybach. That's not the case, but in the course of digging up dirt on upcoming Mercedes models, we got wind of something interesting: A new halo luxury line coming from Daimler, and it’ll be branded Mercedes-Maybach.

The new moniker makes sense, based on Mercedes' recent nomenclature updates. The brand will soon carry three distinct model lines: Mercedes-AMG for high-performance cars (beginning with the upcoming 503-hp, twin-turbo GT and C63), Mercedes-Maybach for super-luxury vehicles, and Mercedes-Benz for the main volume line.

The Mercedes-Maybach sedan will have turbo V12 power, presumably derived from the engine in the Mercedes-Benz S600. Unlike the old Maybach 57 sedan, which was immediately recognizable as a long-wheelbase S Class in profile, the Mercedes-Maybach will sufficiently differentiated, both visually and architecturtally, to ensure proletariats don’t confuse it for the current Merc range-topper. Which, really, is the least you can do for people who are dropping mortgage-grade dough on their daily driver.

More details as they come.

I hope it's not the car picturerd in your post above which looks just like an LWB S Class, the great unwashed are still going to confuse it with a C Class on roids.

I'll be so glad when this is all over. My goodness, it is ridiculous. Time to show the car now, the show is about 1 month away.

A "Mercedes-Maybach" that is nothing more than a lengthend wheelbase S-Class LWB decked-out with an excess of luxury amenities and a modified grill + C-pillar will only further diminish the "Maybach" brand. A far more bespoke approach honoring the era of coachbuilders would be more appropriate-and that applied not only to luxury sedans, but also coupes (2 as well as 4 door) and cabriolets.

It really should not be about turning an automotive Dachshund into an automotive Dachshund with a designers' evening gown.

Pretty much my sentiment a couple posts back. The W222 is a very nice car, and may even be the 'best car in the world'. But when you're going for the uber-high end market, you need to have a bespoke design. I'm afraid this car will be DOA if it ends up looking like the test mules above.

Will we see a lot of what you did with the S-class sedan and coupe in the new-generation Maybach ultraluxury sedan that’s coming soon? The S-class sedan was a radical redesign.

Yes, it will follow the same philosophy but with a certain specialty. For me, Maybach is the haute couture of luxury, and soon you will see what that means.

Is there a car you wish you had designed?
I would like to design an SL. When I joined the company, the SL was already done. That is my big ambition and that is on the list -- stay tuned.

Oh yes!!! Facelift the current one to save it and then do a gorgeous new one.

Stunning pic from the above article. Just put me there instead of Wagener.

Saw this pic and felt nothing special for S600 except the grille! I felt the wheels play a big role in creating an identity, especially the special 600 design multi spoke one!

2016 Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman Spied Getting Closer to Produce
8078ff9488a37d0b7ca398a5a1383ee2.webp

It was towards the end of April when we first spotted the Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman testing for the first time and a lot of time passed since. Today, we’re bringing you a new set of photos of the extra-large S-Class, nearing production guise.

As you can probably tell, this is one long car. Rumors have it that it will measure around 6.4-meters in total length (some 252 inches) while 4 of those meters (around 160 inches) will be reserved for the wheelbase alone.

Of course, that leaves a lot of room for the interior. Basically, the car will have a 2+2+2 configuration that will allow the rear 4 passengers to face each other without a problem. All the luxurious amenities extremely wealthy people expect will be included, of course.

What about Maybach?

The two models based on the S-Class will be different and appealing to distinct demographics. While the Pullman will offer seating for six and price tags that could very well be twice as much as the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the Maybach range will be smaller.

Reviving the double-M badge translates into making the new models somewhat elongated version of the standard S-Class. The Maybach will offer plenty of space in the back but only for two people. Prices will also be smaller, rivaling those of the Rolls-Royce range but not going above them.

Brabus is tuning this car

Even back in April, when we first saw this car, we told you that it was parked in Brabus’ yard in Bottrop. Apparently, due to the bigger size of the Pullman some tuning was needed and the German company was chosen by Daimler to take care of things. It seems like the two have a much closer relationship than we expected.

The car in the photos seems to suggest having six door handles but that’s a long shot. Converting the middle panels into doors wouldn’t actually make sense and we’re guessing they’re fakes to divert our attention.

Under the bonnet, expect the most powerful engine from the S-Class range to show up, the one used on the S 600 model. Making 523 HP and 612 lb-ft (830 Nm) of torque, the 6-liter V12 should be enough even for a car this big.

Prices would reach into the $1 million range with heavy armor on, as these rides are usually ordered for presidents and high ranking dignitaries as well as ultra-wealthy individuals. Expect it to come out in 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show.
