Unlike last time, they are calling the car for what it is: a special version of the model line. Back in 2002, they hyped it as a whole new Model with the chassis of the last generation S Class. So I don't share your doubts but think finally Mercedes have a very coherent and cohesive strategy with Maybach. It is their luxury version of AMG. Keep in mund AMG did not get to develop its own beside cars until decades after effectively being a trim level for regular models.I'm really doubting their strategy with the Maybach brand again. The reason it failed the first time around was because the brand wasn't 'bespoke' enough to contend with the RR's and Bentley's of the world. Bringing the nameplate back and making it a derivative of the W222 seems like a bad idea.
I'm assuming this thing is going to cost upwards or USD $ 300,000. At this price point, you can't have your car looking like a run-of-the-mill S-class.

the Mercedes-Maybach will sufficiently differentiated, both visually and architecturtally, to ensure proletariats don’t confuse it for the current Merc range-topper.
That would be a real surprise. Minimally disguised mules don't suggest anything but a different C pillar.Winner.
Unlike the old Maybach 57 sedan, which was immediately recognizable as a long-wheelbase S Class in profile, the Mercedes-Maybach will sufficiently differentiated, both visually and architecturtally, to ensure proletariats don’t confuse it for the current Merc range-topper. Which, really, is the least you can do for people who are dropping mortgage-grade dough on their daily driver.
Winner.
A "Mercedes-Maybach" that is nothing more than a lengthend wheelbase S-Class LWB decked-out with an excess of luxury amenities and a modified grill + C-pillar will only further diminish the "Maybach" brand. A far more bespoke approach honoring the era of coachbuilders would be more appropriate-and that applied not only to luxury sedans, but also coupes (2 as well as 4 door) and cabriolets.
It really should not be about turning an automotive Dachshund into an automotive Dachshund with a designers' evening gown.
Is there a car you wish you had designed?
I would like to design an SL. When I joined the company, the SL was already done. That is my big ambition and that is on the list -- stay tuned.
