A engine engineer told me following facts:

Large vs small engine

A smaller engine generate less torque than a large engine. A small engine can gain more torque if you adding a Turbo. Less torque a weaker clutch or gearbox can be used.

Number of cylinders:
More cylinders - more effect but fuel consumption gets higher becuase of increased friction. The engine gets larger and weigh more with more cylinders.

Less cylinders, less effect but lower fuel consumption. The engine also gets a lower weight.

Basic rules :)

What does 'effect' mean?

well thats gr8.. MB made similar power with smaller engine.. and lighter i guess..
and the torque is another win..
and as far as turbo goes bmw wont use turbo on the V10..

so its a win win i guess.

MB compensate it with adding larger displacement.
I wrote it was basic rules

Artist thats actually not quite true. THe mercedes engine is actually bigger in that the cylinders use more space (6.3 litres vs. 5 litres), however the M5 engine is heavier, i think.
He's talking about physical size in which case the Merc engine is smaller and therefore lighter.

I want you all to take note, I never actually said that I thought that the M5 engine was better--I was simply naming reasons why Imhotep may think that. I actually think both are superb engines, honestly.
