BMW never, ever skimps on engineering no matter what the car.
And MB doesn't?
Also, I doubt very much the CLS63 AMG will have such a price-tag. Since this car is 'merely' an engine change from the CLS55 AMG, I doubt the price would change, if not at all. Same dealie with the C32 AMG and the C55 AMG - since it was just an engine change, the price did not go up much at all. So this leads me to doubt the huge price hike you specify Matt.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand.
Without doubt, the CLS63 AMG will be as close as any MB gets to being 'better' (from a BMW point-of-view) than a BMW M Model. Think of it as MB's RS4, if you will. This is their best shot, and no doubt, they've tried to the buggery to make this car reach the best of it's potential - the ingredients surely suggest so, especially that AMG-exclusive 6.3L V8.
Whether that comes close to the absolute mastery that BMW can cook up is unknown, at least on the road. But without doubt, this will be as close as it gets, that's for sure.
But looking solely on specificiations and design, I think the CLS has that extra 'edge'. The amount of power and torque generated from the 6.3L V8 is just...phenomenal. Sure, it might not be as high-tech as BMW's V10, but it sure makes up for it sheer power and torque. And, really, that's what matters doesn't it? It doesn't matter who has the more 'technologically-advanced' engine or whether your car has extra cylinders, it all comes down to how much, how well and how great that engine is. And the V8 definately has all of that.
Looks. Expect this to be where the buyer chooses A or B. Both are controversial, both are revolutionary and both are beautiful and horribly ugly at the same time.
The M6 can simply be summed up in one word: Bangle. Take that whichever way you want - whether you think he's the saviour of BMW, or whether he's BMW's 'home-wrecker', it doesn't matter. I personally think he's a bit of both. On one hand, the 6 Series in general looks serene, elegant and imposing, but on the other it looks awkward, downright ugly and just plain weird. It's not a DB9, but it's also not an Aztek. Weird, I know, but that's what I feel about it.
The CLS - well, what can I say. Banana? Groundbreaking? Sexy? Strange? It's all of those things. It's got it's good bits, and it's got it's bad. But overall, I think it looks quite grand. The interior is quite fabulous as well. Very 'gentlemanish', which amuses me, since the exterior styling, engine and suspension suggest otherwise. I do hate the fact that it's only a four-seater though.
Overall, like I said before, the CLS has got that 'edge' to it, which makes it such a great car, and one that is destined to be a classic and a revolutionist. The engine, the interior, the looks - it's got 'it'. Can you say to yourself that the M6 is revolutionary and classic? Of course not.
